You’ve just resumed at a brand-new workplace. New clothes, new confidence, fresh notebook, pen still shining. You’re doing that small-small “good morning sir, good morning ma” like a responsible adult who has their life together.

You sit down, pretending to look busy, opening random files on the computer like you know exactly what you’re doing.

Then you hear it.

Not loudly.
Not proudly.
Just casually.

From the corner of the office.

Someone clears their throat and asks, with their full chest and zero shame:

“Please… when will they pay November salary?”

💀💀💀

You freeze.

Novemberhuh

You check your calendar.
It’s FEBRUARY.

Your spirit leaves your body for a quick meeting.

You slowly remove your earpiece, because surely you misheard. Maybe they said “new member salary” or “network salary” or “never mind salary”.

But no.

Another voice replies, tired, broken, experienced:

“Ah… we’re still waiting.”

WAITINGhuh

You just resumed TODAY.
You haven’t even been given your email password yet.
You don’t know where the toilet is.
And people are owed NOVEMBER salaryhuh

Suddenly, your new job orientation begins internally.

“Ohhh… so this is not a workplace.
This is a support group.”

The chair you’re sitting on?
Debt.

The desk?
Trauma.

The AC?
Decorative.

You start doing quick math in your head like:

“So if November is still pending…
December is loading…
January is buffering…
February is a rumour…”

You quietly pack your bag with respect.

No noise.
No eye contact.
Just vibes.

By lunch break, you’re no longer asking about your role.
You’re asking survival questions like:

“Do they allow remote suffering here?”

By closing time, you’re already emotionally owed three salaries you haven’t earned.

Welcome to the company.
Where the work is plenty, the hope is optional, and November never ends. 😭

It's not this, it's that. No soul. No vibes. Just words. Empty words. grin

If you don't have it, you can't fake it till you make it. They told them go school, dem say school na scam, now they thought with AI, it's a shortcut to the process. Intelligence can never be artificial

You're right to point that out and I'm absolutely sorry. My bad.

You didn't ask me to include that detail. 🤣

I have never laughed like this in over two decades. See me laughing like a teenager with no worries in life.
Thumbs up to the writer

Let me tell you my experience...so one time after my waec, I got a job at Mr Biggs in Marina. I resumed on a Monday, everything was going fine and then on the Thursday of that same week, a colleague who I was having a talk with, said that I'll receive my first salary in 3 months time cause he's being owed 2 months salary. I thought it was a joke, I walked up to the manager about it and he (the manager) said "To be honest with you, you won't be paid this month but maybe the next"
I resigned then and there.
Started work on Monday, resigned on Thursday.
