How Much Do You Need Monthly To Live Comfortably In Nigeria In 2026? by chukwuebuka1122(op): 3:52am On Mar 25
Good evening everyone.

Let’s have a real and honest discussion. With the current cost of living, things have changed a lot compared to a few years ago. Prices of food, transport, rent, and basic needs have all increased.

At the same time, many people are still earning around the same income or only slightly more. So it raises an important question:

How much does someone actually need monthly to live comfortably in Nigeria today?

Not luxury, just a decent and stable life.

Let’s break it down realistically:

Rent
Feeding
Transportation
Data and subscriptions
Family responsibilities
Savings (if possible)

For some people, ₦100k may not be enough.
For others, even ₦300k might still feel tight depending on lifestyle and location.

Everyone’s situation is different, but it would be interesting to hear real experiences.

So let’s be honest:

How much do you think someone needs monthly to live comfortably in Nigeria in 2026, and why?

Depends on if with kids or not.

Without kids, 700k

With kids, 1m plus 500k per extra head in the house

Where you stay in Nigeria is a major factor that needs to be considered to be able to answer the question.

What you will need to survive in Abuja is not the same as if you live in Maiduguri.

Is it not more meaningful to have a comparison between the cost of living before AND after the change promised by APC was allowed by Nigerians huh

thisweekng:
The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy Chief Olawale Edun has said the last time Nigeria’s economy looked stable was about a decade ago.

He made this statement during his maiden press conference as Minister of Finance where he outlined President Bola Tinubu’s vision, agenda and strategy for the economy.

He said, “I think as we all know, we are not where we should be. The economy is barely growing above the rate of population growth.

“But it was not always so, and I think in trying to look at the way forward, if we now have a situation of slow growth, double-digit inflation, weak/depreciating exchange rate, as well as security concerns that are resulting in an economy that is not growing and not taking Nigerians out of poverty.

“If we think back to the last time when the economy was stable- when it was growing, when inflation was low, and the interest rate was affordable, that period was about a decade ago. Growth was about 6% in 2013 and 2014.”

There are many factors to be considered:

- Are they married?
- What economic class does the person belong to after say university education?
- Which state does the person reside? What city?
- For married people how many children do they have?
- What does the person do for a living?
- Is the person a tenant or own his/her property? Let's assume the person is a tenant.

Too many factors...but maybe we can start with the tax categories as outlined in Tinubu's new tax laws. You know, 50m naira and above pay the highest tax band. 🙄

In the days before the change of government, I was a man at ease and a man of means

Each month, I received eight hundred thousand naira after my tasks were done. It was sufficient for my household, for my wife, and even for Fatima my secrete mistress ; one whose laughter brought me secret joy. Life, though not extravagant, but was comfortable.

But when the times changed, so did my fortune.

Now I earn one million naira each month, yet it no longer carries the strength it once did. What once fed many can barely satisfy two. Before the fourth week arrives, my wife’s face tightens, for her kitchen grows empty.

Of all that I have lost to this administration and inflation, none pains me like Fatima, the rare gift that Lagos once placed in my path. Her beauty was such that even the strongest of men would falter before it. And now, as my purse has grown light, so too has her presence vanished from my life.

My burdens have multiplied.

My mother brings forth her needs like an unending stream, and I find myself unable to meet them as before. My in laws, who once looked upon me with respect, now see me as a man whose hands have weakened, for the small support I once sent has been swallowed by rising costs.

Even in the house of worship, my place has diminished. The pastor who once greeted me with honor now scarcely turns his gaze toward me, for my tithe no longer speaks loudly in his ears.

In my village, where I was once celebrated and given the title of Ogbuefi, there are whispers. I no longer visit as I once did, nor do I bring gifts of cattle. And so, the honor that was given in days of abundance now trembles in days of scarcity.

Thus I ask you my friends ,

Can a man truly live in comfort in these times, when his earnings rise, yet his needs unending ?

No my friends , no my friends
