The Story Behind The 'Stop Abortion' Junction In Asaba by Splendicity(op): 1:24pm On Mar 26
The Stoty Behind Asaba's "Stop Abortion" Junction

There is a place in Asaba called Umuda Roundabout, and there lies a statue of a woman with a transparent belly, and when you look through the belly, you will see a baby.And under it, they wrote;

"Stop Abortion."

This statue has been there for long,, till date, the junction is known as "Stop Abortion" Junction.

People might be asking what really went wrong or what is the story behind this "Stop Abortion inscription"

(Some indigenes and non-indigenes like "Mr Charles Awele" gave me their part of the stories with names mentioned, but we won't be mentioning people's names in this post)

The purpose of the story is to take us back to what led to the "Stop Abortion" mirage.

So here is the story:

The incident happened very close to the place in Asaba called "Ogbeke Square."

There was a former U.S. nurse (not from Asaba, but a man from the East) who came back because of the Biafran War. He came to Asaba and opened a chemist shop along Ogbeke Square.

The owner of the shop where the U.S. nurse rented was a well-known and prominent Asaba family. So, the man, being a well-trained U.S. nurse and very versatile in his field, at a point decided to venture into abortion fully.

He was so good at it that he became very popular in the early 1990s.

The man became so popular that you rarely see people with unwanted pregnancies, and any time abortion is being mentioned, his name will be called; him coming from the U.S. was also a pointer.

This had been going on for years until the devoted Catholic family that owns the property became uncomfortable with the whole thing, because their name was also being mentioned whenever anyone was explaining the building and the location of the chemist to anyone.

Inasmuch as they wanted to evict the man from their property, it was difficult because he was well-connected and had some loyalists who fought against his eviction within the family.

Later on, the matriarch of the family (the head and the most respected) decided to frane a story because other means never worked. I forgot to say the man had a military background too, and that was why he was feared.

The family oldest woman in the family made up a story of children crying all night in the compound and started making placards of the dangers of abortion, and even putting up one just above his shop.

It got a lot of attention; people got talking and finally, it worked.

The whole incident made the man move out from there to Cable, where he continued his business.

A Catholic priest heard the news from the family matriarch (the eldest woman in the family) because she was a staunch Catholic. Mind you, then, abortion was rampant, and laws were not too strict on abortion as they are today.

So when he left, there was a move made by a Catholic priest in St. Joseph against abortion, which led to them putting up a statue.

Though the statue wasn't built close to Ogbeke Square where it happened, they looked for a central area they would build the statue and inscribe "Stop Abortion" on it so that more eyes would see it.

They later concluded to build it in Umuda Roundabout, Asaba, not so far from Ogbeke Square.

And ever since then, the statue has been there, and that junction till today is currently called "Stop Abortion Junction."

A story without dates is incomplete. "The man returned from Biafra war", "in the 1990s", "later on", "when he left"...all cut and paste.

A good story has a timeline that we can start from point A to Z. Even if we don't have all the details, we will know when the statue was built undecided

A nurse in my village was very good with this abortion stuff then. If you wan abort belle or perform any sexual related operation that lady was the GOTO person. Bouncers were even guiding her chemist shop then.

On traveling home in 2023 I was shocked to see her chemist shop very dilapidated, and a complete shadow of itself. I was even scared to ask her what happened.

On an aunt I was told that this lady couldn't get pregnant for decades, that she has married 3 different men, and still couldn't get pregnant. That she spent all her money on In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) which produced a baby boy, that since then anything abortion she no dey do again, and no money to replenish store again, worst of all the father of the said child still dumped her, ogbeni married her for the money, when money dried up he fled. Karma dey true true.

The story would have been more interesting if you had put dates or at least around so so period. Only that one time you mentioned 1990s is not really satisfying. Good write-up tho.
