BREAKING: Viral Video Claims Nigerian CDS Made Controversial Statement On Terror by Busy5767(op): 5:56pm On Mar 26
A video has just started circulating on X (Twitter) showing what appears to be Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, making a statement about how terrorists should be dealt with suggesting a chance for repentance using a biblical analogy (“prodigal son”).

We published an article discussing the video and providing context because at this time no major news outlets have independently verified the claim. You can read it here and watch clip

Your thoughts?
Should statements by top military officials be taken seriously before official confirmation, or should we wait for verified source reporting?

Forgiveness should be left for the Lord only, the military should be arranging the terrorists meeting our good Lord

As much as I understand his point of approach, but terrorist can't be forgiven. It's between them and God, your duty is to arrange for the meeting.

While I don't agree to any second chance for a terrorist but do you know that some of those boko haram members are Young's boy that were kidnapped and forced into the group.

The enter a village to kidnap young boys just to force them to be members.

You are right, the other day I saw Boko indoctrinating kids with Army uniform and training them. What they should do is to create an awareness about birth control, give the kids/almajiri education and take them off the streets. The Hydra which is their main bossess should be eliminated without mercy just as Israel dey do him own. Then if they are remorseful give them second chance but I doubt this will happen cos the North knows what they are doing.

I understand your point, and truly the pain caused by terrorism makes people feel justice should be immediate and strict. But at the same time, the role of the military is also to protect and manage situations carefully. Not every case is always black and white, especially when some individuals may have been forced into it.

That’s a strong position and many people feel the same way. But the challenge is that security decisions are not always just emotional sometimes they involve intelligence, negotiation, and preventing further attacks. It’s not always as simple as eliminating everyone involved.

Exactly, and this is where the situation becomes complicated. Some of them are victims themselves before becoming perpetrators. That’s why many experts talk about separating hardened fighters from those who were forced or indoctrinated, especially young ones.

You made a very important point about root causes. If the system doesn’t address issues like poverty, lack of education, and child vulnerability, the cycle will continue. Dealing with the top commanders is one part, but preventing recruitment is just as important for long-term peace.

The CDS is obviously exhausted mercy is not for deranged animals in human form ,the more you show mercy the more they hit at you.
Nepotism will continue to make the Nigeria army look subdued that is the effect of bad leadership at the top.

I understand the frustration, especially with how long insecurity has gone on and the pain people have experienced. But at the same time, reducing everything to anger alone may not solve the problem.

The military’s job is not just about force, but also strategy sometimes decisions are based on intelligence, long-term stability, and preventing more violence. Also, not everyone involved in these groups is the same; some are hardened fighters, while others were forced or misled into it.

As for leadership, accountability is important, and people have the right to question decisions. But solving insecurity will require more than just blame it needs better coordination, proper resources, and addressing the root causes as well.

What he said makes sense if you listen objectively.. they are creating a window for willing terrorists to surrender..

Its a non-kinetic approach considering that some of these folks were captured from their villages and forced to be foot soldiers.

I think it should be limited to those who come and surrender willingly and that after soldiers capture you after a fierce battle where some died you now claim you are repented... it should also be limited to BH, not Bandits and rogue Herders who have been kidnapping for ransom.

so we should continue having episodes of repented terrorists who turn out to go back to their crimes over and over? No na.
Whether forced into or brainwashed the intelligence unit should take an appraisal of the damages which these brainwashed and deceived few population can cause on the overall interest of the country and decide whether to save the country or the brainwashed terrorist who are few in number.
You cannot go on leading with tribalism and putting your brother who is not capable of the position and expect things to go right.
This is a lame and lazy way to approach the damage that has already been done.

The clip sounds like the chief is urging terrorists to repent—using the “prodigal son” image to leave the door open for surrender.
It’s a delicate line: offering clemency can encourage fighters to lay down arms, but many Nigerians will read it as soft‑pedaling justice after mass killings.
The idea only works if it’s paired with firm prosecution for atrocities and visible protection for victims; otherwise “repentance” risks looking like impunity.

You’ve raised valid concerns, especially about cases where “repentant” fighters return to violence that’s something no country can afford to ignore. Security decisions should definitely be based on risk assessment and intelligence, not emotions, and protecting the wider population must always come first.

At the same time, it’s also important to separate different categories of people involved. Those who are hardened fighters or repeat offenders should face strict consequences, no doubt. But those who were genuinely forced into it, especially at a young age, may require a different approach otherwise, we risk pushing more people back into the cycle.

On leadership, accountability is key. Appointments and decisions should be based on competence and results, not connections. When that balance is missing, it affects trust and effectiveness.

In the end, the real solution is not choosing between “the country or a few individuals” it’s building a system that protects citizens first, punishes real threats, and prevents future recruitment at the same time.

Bro forget long talk

Na only Iron fist with iron claw go fit cure these people madness

Nothing else will
These Appeasement policy you are aggressively pursuing will not work, has not worked and will continue to fail until the needful is done.

How many times will they tell you that they don't negotiate with terrorists ?
