Nigerian Businessman Arrested In Malawi For Illicit Foreign Currency Possession by Peterobiisathie(op): 11:03pm On Mar 26
Police at Kamuzu International Airport have arrested a Nigerian businessman identified as Collins Iheanacho Bernard, aged 45 in Lilongwe for violating foreign currency regulations.

KIA Public Relations Officer, Sapulain Chitonde Lee, says that on March 25, 2026, at about 01: 35 PM, detectives carrying out routine checks in the Forward Lounge intercepted Bernard, and when asked to declare what he was carrying, he denied having foreign currency.

However, a physical search uncovered $2,800 hidden in his old passport and pockets and he did not produce supporting documents and claimed the money had been given to him by a friend without formal paperwork and officers confiscated the cash and arrested him.

Bernard will be charged with possessing foreign currency without permits and attempting to externalize foreign currency, contrary to the Exchange Control Act.

He comes from Village Amanator, Traditional Authority Ebonyi, District Lagos, Nigeria.

Airport Police have issued a stern warning to all passengers to comply with exit formalities to avoid arrest.

Malawi is one of the poorest countries in Africa. Please stop defending wrong.

This is worrisome. Many foreigners especially Africans identify as Nigerian when caught in crime. This fellow probably said he's from Lagos Nigeria, though his registered records say a full picture. Nigeria better wake up, and in this case Lagos also. i read of people adding yoruba names to write WASSCE for a fee, i thought it sounded funny. Now, i see one of the whys.

So that's all? I thought I was gonna hear an amount above the limit. His failure to declare is what made him a suspect I guess. It's the acting like 2.8k is 200k that is amusing

And what the heck is that place of origin?

Are they so poor that they have never seen someone with $2,800 before? Rules on currencies are made by the owner of the currency: The United States rule is on $10,000 and above, not a mere Uber money somewhere else.

Did the address say Amanator Ebonyi Lagos? Where is that located in Lagos, Nigeria? I am confused

Free the guy and let him go.

Peterobissthief, this isn’t one of those fake drug-trafficking narratives you usually push here.

It’s obvious you didn’t read the news, you just saw ‘illegal something,’ checked the person’s ethnicity, and ran with it because it fits your divisive, tribal narrative.
But why are the Malawians throwing a fit over a measly $2800?
Re: Nigerian Businessman Arrested In Malawi For Illicit Foreign Currency Possession by Perewenkle1: 5:23am On Mar 27
Most people who visit NAIJA and when asked by the custom, they declare less than what they have, not that the money is illicit but because you don’t want anyone coming after yo for your money.

Propaganda gone sour. The @OP is ..you know one of those who dislike our neigbours from the East so he goes around the World searching for fake propaganda news agsinst our neigbours.

The mods always quickly pushes his fake propaganda thread against our neigbours as long as he is the one who created the thread. There is no checking the contents of the fake thread. cheesy
