IPOB Commends U.S. Lawmakers, Calls For Referendum On Biafra by attackgat(op): 10:31pm On Mar 26

The Indigenous People of Biafra has commended a United States-based commentator, Mark Arnold, and members of the U.S. Congress for what it described as their intervention in drawing attention to security concerns in Nigeria.

In a statement issued on Thursday by its spokesperson, Emma Powerful, the group said the remarks by the U.S. figures had helped highlight issues affecting communities in parts of the country.

IPOB, led by Nnamdi Kanu, maintained that its long-standing position on self-determination remains unchanged, calling for a peaceful and internationally supervised referendum to determine the political future of the South-East.

The group argued that such a referendum represents a lawful and non-violent approach to addressing grievances related to governance and security. It added that continued agitation reflects concerns over safety, inclusion, and political representation.

According to the statement, IPOB believes that greater international attention could encourage dialogue and adherence to democratic principles in resolving internal disputes.

The organisation also urged its supporters and the international community to continue engaging through lawful and diplomatic channels, while reiterating its call for self-determination.

IPOB further appealed to relevant authorities to prioritise peaceful solutions to Nigeria’s security and political challenges, noting that sustained dialogue remains key to stability and national cohesion.

So it was an igbo man that remove referendum from Nigeria constitution.

I think IPOB is right this time. Why can't there be a referendum so people can determine their own destiny themselves?

The happenings of recent lays credence to the fact that Nigeria can never be homogeneous as there are so many distrusts amongst the various ethnicities.

Conduct free and fair referendum and put this to back and forth to a final rest.

Stop being mischievous. First of all the 1956 constitution outlawed referendum for secession. It was never an igbo man that removed referendum from the constitution. Adaka Boro was used by Tafawa Balewa to incite trouble in the Eastern region because Boro at that time had no basis to even agitate because we had not even started selling crude oil at that time. The bulk of eastern region's revenue was still from coal in Enugu and oil palms in igbo areas and the calabar oil rivers area. So when Jan 66 happened Boro felt he needed to act since his benefactor was dead, hence he revolted.

If there is a referendum today, majority of the Igbos will vote to remain in Nigeria. The first step towards showing seriousness to be independent is to live in your region.

The major agitation of most Igbos is to dominate the power structure of the country, not independence. Before the 2019 elections, Nnamdi Kanu declared there would be no elections in the SE and he was accused by the Igbos of working for Buhari.

The Igbos saw a pathway to Aso rock and were willing to throw Kanu under the bus. The same man they all claim to love now. If Tinubu releases Kanu today, the same suspicion will arise.

Asides the IPOB members trying to rule over the SE through the back door, majority of Igbos would opt to remain in Nigeria.
