NIGERIA'S PUBLIC DEBT GROWTH: BUHARI VS TINUBU — 2026

Average annual debt increase:
Buhari (2015—2023) — ₦9.41 Trillion
Tinubu (2023—2025) — ₦29.29 Trillion

Total debt change:
Buhari (8 years): ₦75.3 Trillion increase
Tinubu (2.25 years): ₦65.9 Trillion increase

Tinubu's administration added an average of ₦29.29 trillion to Nigeria’s public debt annually.

This rate was triple the ₦9.41 trillion annual average seen under the previous administration.

While Buhari added ₦75.3 trillion over 8 years, the total debt rose by ₦65.9 trillion in the first 2 years of the Tinubu presidency.

Buhari was paying trillions annually to subsidise fuel prices, yet Nigeria’s debt profile was 3 times lower under him.

Meanwhile Tinubu in his first two years in office has almost amassed the same amount of debt that Buhari accumulated after 8 years in office despite Tinubu not having to pay fuel subsidy.

I'm beginning to think we were unfair to Buhari

Tinubu wants to wreck Nigeria with debts - the same thing he and his cohorts did to Lagos State. Nigeria is obviously in wrong hands now.

For less than 4 years it's already close to Buhari that means if they give him another 4 years it will be massive debt.

Even with his incompetence those looting with him are very ready to rig the election massively for him. It's a pity
Re: Nigeria's Public Debt Growth: Buhari Vs Tinubu — 2026 by iwaeda: 8:49am On Mar 27
Tinubu is borrowing to make Nigeria poorer, companies are shutting down, road deserted due to high cost of transportation, people can't afford good housing, we are paying for darkness, but some people still want Tinubu to continue. I pity you in advance. Borrow SENSE. This is just the beginning of adversity. Even minimum wage is not paid by many government agencies. grin grin grin grin grin

My question is, of what use are educational qualifications in Nigeria when it comes to judging competence?

How is it that a man who never saw the 4 walls of a university was better able to manage Nigeria’s economy than a man who was allegedly trained in one of the best universities in the United States?

This is being clever by half. What is the dollar value of the loans for the 2 periods?
To put this in context, under Buhari, Naira to USD was averagely N320 while under Tinubu its averagle N1400. At Buharis N75trn and Tinubu's N65trn, loans under Burai is $234bn while same under Tinubu is $46bn.

Re: Nigeria's Public Debt Growth: Buhari Vs Tinubu — 2026 by erniok2: 8:51am On Mar 27
I'd love to see this debt profiles in the USD it was borrowed with because if you look at the different conversion rates, the news becomes just sensational.

That's my take too. It's a ploy to whip up public sentiments since the debts were not borrowed using naira.

How can someone sensible and in his right sense defend this? Someone is wrecking the country you claim you love like this, but you will still choose to be loyal to him? Defending based on tribalism and religion! Nigerians are bad to Nigeria, walai.

Tinubu remove almost all subsidies in Nigeria and introduce new various taxes, yet is more indebted than Buhari.... Yet we're not asking questions.

Where are the money going to?

The only thing that gives me happiness is "irrespective of your tribe, religion, political party, region or whatsoever, we are all in this together. We will all buy fuel, cooking gas, exchange rate, good stuffs at the same price.

Can you exchange that into dollars please? I want to see something. Afterall, debts will be paid in dollars, not naira.
Secondly, apart from second Niger bridge, show me any other major projects of Buhari. Tinubu is building the two longest roads in Nigeria at same time. He is building railways all over the country. Governors have triple money on what they used to get under Buhari. Where did all that come from? If your governor is not helping to reduce poverty among his people, whose fault is that?
