Kemi Badenoch Slams UK Government For Failing To Vote Against Slave Trade Compensations For Africans
March 26, 2026
NEWS

Leader of the UK Conservative Party, Kemi Badenoch, has criticised the British government for abstaining from a United Nations vote on slavery reparations, questioning the decision and warning against any move that could see UK taxpayers bear the cost.

Reacting to the development, Badenoch wrote, “Russia, China and Iran vote with others to demand trillions in reparations from UK taxpayers…and the Labour government abstain!”

She added, “Britain led the fight to end slavery. Why didn’t Starmer’s representative vote against this? Ignorance…or cowardice?”

“We shouldn’t be paying for a crime we helped eradicate and still fight today,” she said.

The controversy comes after the United Nations General Assembly adopted a landmark motion, backed by 123 countries, calling for reparations over the transatlantic slave trade and describing it as one of the gravest crimes against humanity.

Earlier, SaharaReporters reported that Ghana secured a major diplomatic breakthrough with the adoption of the motion, which is being seen as a significant step toward global acknowledgment of historical injustices against Africans.

The resolution urges countries to engage in structured dialogue and take concrete steps to address the enduring social, economic and cultural consequences of slavery and the transatlantic slave trade.

Several African nations, including Nigeria, Egypt, Algeria, Libya, Liberia, Kenya and Congo, supported the motion. Other countries such as Azerbaijan, Belarus and India also voted in favour.

However, the United States, Argentina and Israel voted against the resolution, while 52 countries—including major European powers like France, Germany, Belgium, Hungary and Cyprus—abstained.

During deliberations, a United States representative described the African Union-backed framework as “highly problematic,” despite acknowledging the historical injustices of slavery.

“While we recognise the wrongs of the past, we are unclear on who the beneficiaries of reparatory justice would be, and therefore cannot support the resolution at this time,” the US representative said.

The motion, titled “Declaration of the Trafficking of Enslaved Africans and Racialised Chattel Enslavement of Africans as the Gravest Crime Against Humanity,” is part of a broader campaign under the African Union’s Decade of Action on Reparations and African Heritage (2026–2036).

It marks one of the most comprehensive efforts by the United Nations to formally address the legacy of the transatlantic slave trade, even as Badenoch’s reaction highlights deep divisions among global leaders over the issue of reparations.

Slavery was a business that the elites in those days benefited from. It was like the oil money that the kings used to marry more wives. If not for the West who eventually decided to end the madness, we might have had baby factories in Africa.
I am not shielding the West either for slave trade as they indulged in the evil business. The main victims of slavery were the slaves who were commodity in the eyes of the buyers and sellers. Thank God for civilization.

She's Yoruba when it is convenient for you, other times she doesn't want anything to do with Yoruba.
Why don't you leave tribalism alone for a moment and see the overall importance or lack of it of what is being discussed?

Growing up, I learnt from different sources that Nigerians sold to slavery were those whose parents or local communities considered useless, stubborn, disrespectful or problematic. If that is true, why are Black Africans still playing the victim card for intentionally selling off their own people?

Probably you need to go and read your history books again.
Wars were fought to capture slaves, raids, children separated from their parents, a whole family captured and sold into slavery. Human were sold in exchange for drinks, mirror, salt weapons etc.
Pay a visit to Gore Island, Senegal and visit the Gate of no return and you will better appreciate the evil of slavery.
So stop commenting on what you little or nothing about

A question was asked and no answer. Who will be the beneficiaries? Government or families whose children were sold to slavery.

Who will pay? Business involves seller and buyer. Africans sold their people and white people bought it. So the buyer and seller should pay if the motion will ever become a reality.

Corrupt black african presidents salivating to loot the trillions will wait for 1 trillion light years cos that ain't gonna happen. No compensation will be paid.

I don't neccesarily agree with reparations myself because we as black Africans were very complicit in the evilness.

If there were to be though, it needs to be in the form of things like scholarships and rural community development initiatives.

Definitely not letting the political class anywhere near the monies.

In her mind she's white , you committed a crime, cause so much damages yet someone who is tired of the slavery in her country ran to her slave master country to enjoy, yet she still complaining that her slave master should not atone for his crime, because she enjoys seeing other slaves clean her slave master children's ass when they grow old while abandoning their own parents in the mother land .Someone should please send Amala and hot gbegiri to her house with good goat meat, maybe just maybe her brain would reset.

So your ancestors that sold the slaves to white men were not part of the crime?

If there's no demand there would be no supply, moreover not everyone sold slaves just a few retard ones.

Two ironies:
The first is that a white country cleverly propped up a black person to argue against the motion regarding slavery. So, its just like then in the actual slave era where the very loyal black slave vigorously defends the white slave master.

The second irony is that Isreal and USA voted against.
But many evangelical Christians in black nations are so obsessed in their support of these two, even when they regards blacks as filthy.
Is it a case of slave worship??

She was right,
The British had to force all European countries to abolish slave trade, they were movement in the UK that help does this. I mean they had to force other countries into abolishing it.

All qoutes are right, I agree the abolishment was for Britain benefit and not for Africans, they got no choice than to do so.
Thanks much for the enlightenment and correction

Slavery was not just limited to blacks vs whites, blacks enslaved white (the moors of spain), white enslaved white, black enslaved blacks. It's a complicated story.

Works of economists such as Thomas sowell, confirms this.

"The people made worse off by slavery were those who were enslaved. Their descendants would have been worse off today if born in Africa instead of America. Put differently, the terrible fate of their ancestors benefitted them."

— Thomas Sowell

Thomas Sowell: “Slavery was much bigger and involved, infinitely more people than people have realized. It was not confined by race. It was not defined by race or created by race. It existed for thousands of years.”

“While slavery was common to all civilizations, as well as to peoples considered uncivilized, only one civilization developed a moral revulsion against it, very late in its history—Western civilization.”

— Thomas Sowell

Even me i vote against compensation, especially monetary. It will be largely embezzled. Cunning man wants to collect billions of pounds and dollars for another person's suffering hundred years ago. Na you go first slave abi? Imagine Israel waiting for slave money from Egypt instead of going ahead with their lives and development. Na only black man be slave before? Who is going to pay for the worse than slave trade treatment of many workers around the world today, especially in Africa and Asia?
Abeg, leave sentiments.

Wokeness go finally finish these people laslas ... i support kemi....we see what African leaders are doing with our resources to enrich themselves to the detriment of the people....200yrs from now they will also call for reparations for stolen resources, aided by African leaders ...they will then change the narrative, like African leaders were forced to surrender their resources to develop Europe

The victims didn't benefit so shut up.
Should we neglect victims of human trafficking, victims of forced prostitution because some Africans benefits from such crimes? When they need the slaves why didn't they consider Europeans
These same people have immigration laws to protect victims of human trafficking but they are unwilling to compensate a continent where they killed tens of millions through slavery. When they need slaves why didn't they consider Europeans?

It benefited the countries involved- Their churches, monarchies, banks(which still exist today), individuals who still got paid until some decades ago due to ending the slavery. It gave jobs to their society and so on.

Seriously?

They abolished slave trade then went into colonization.

There is something I have figured out from history, it seems like every evil act that was ever carried out in the world and mostly Africa were well planned out and they all had their timelines. During the slave era, almost all the foreign countries participated in it. Now when that era was over possibly because slaves were becoming wiser an rebellion was growing, they had to stop slavery.

Now, to the next agenda, colonization. Since they can't leave Africa alone because their greatness depends on us, they created colonization. Another device used to loot and corner African resources for their benefits. For decades, this continued until Africans started becoming wiser and so many Africans started standing up against them, they had to leave but not leave.

They still found away to control Africa even after colonization. SMH

For those comments up there saying the UK helped stopped slavery, My question is, didn't they participate in it or didn't they participate in the next evil (colonization)?
