I have a childhood friend from Delta. He's name is America. A lot of people always think he's joking when they ask for his name.

I used to hear comedians use it in jokes I never really knew it was actually a name.

A had a neighbor one time in kaduna... one of the son's name was pikin I asked if it was a nickname or alias. They said no, real name.

For the most unusual names though hand the trophy to the Delta and bayelsa ijaws

Those ones can answer anything. And how can I forget my plateau people. Pan, rang and so many Chinese sounding names.

Someone made a joke about them dropping a plate at the birth of a child and naming the child after the sound the plate made when it hit the ground!

Although Northern people dey bear their town and village name like Jalingo, Kano, Kaduna etc

You are wrong. That's what I initially thought was the meaning when I heard and laughed over it. It's actually ori di okuta. If you are Yoruba you will understand the deep meaning beyond the literal interpretation. That's why many of them are yet to change it

Oridokuta should be the short form of 'ori di okuta'. There is nothing else you can use to shalaye that people will accept o.

I think many of us have come across some really funny or unusual names that make you pause and wonder what they actually mean.

Back in university, I had a friend whose name was Nigeria. The first time I met him and he told me his name, I was like, “Haaaaa!” 😄 I thought that was the strangest name I’d ever heard until I travelled to the South-South and started hearing names like Natural, President, Government, Manager, Ajalekoko, and more.

I’m sure these names have meaningful stories behind them for the people who bear them.

Recently I came across "Egunje" originally meant grounded herbs (similar to egunmu) but now euphemism for bribery!

I saw a video on Tiktok where the girl said she met a Nigerian Uber driver, I think in the US, whose name was 'TakeControl'. I bet he is a South South man. 😂
