Hon. Mayor John Echefu: Igbos Do Not Vote On Ethnic Or Tribal Sentiments by Epiphany18(op): 12:10pm On Mar 29
Hon. Major John Echefu; an ADC Chieftain and Lagos House of Assembly aspirant for Oshodi-Isolo Constituency 02 has stressed that the Igbo people do not base their voting decisions on ethnic sentiment or tribal loyalty. Instead, they adopt a highly pragmatic and results-oriented approach, focusing primarily on a candidate’s competence, capacity, and proven ability to tackle Nigeria’s numerous challenges.

He explained that while ethnic identity matters to the Igbo, it does not automatically translate into blind support for any candidate simply because the person shares their background. The community carefully assesses aspirants based on their track record, policy vision, and realistic potential to deliver meaningful change in governance, security, the economy, and infrastructure.

Hon. Echefu further asserted that this rational and issue-driven style of political engagement is characteristic of the Igbo electorate. They prioritize leadership qualities that promise tangible improvements in the lives of citizens over emotional or cultural attachments.

In the current political climate, he stated that the Igbo have identified Peter Obi as the candidate best positioned to address the country’s deep-rooted problems. Their support for Obi, he clarified, is not rooted in ethnic affiliation but in the conviction that he possesses the intellect, experience, and determination required to fix Nigeria.

He concluded by emphasizing the sophistication of Igbo political reasoning: "There is something most
Nigerians don’t know about the Igbo. Igbos don’t vote out of sentiments; they vote based on who they feel has answers to the myriad of problems confronting the nation. Igbo will go for Peter Obi not because he is one of them, but because he has the magic wand to fix this country.”

This perspective, according to Echefu, reflects a broader commitment among the Igbo to national progress, stability, and effective governance rather than narrow sectional interests.
