Richtaiwo:“A former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has said Nigeria’s garment and footwear industry in Aba, Abia State, can generate revenue COMPARABLE to the country’s oil earnings if properly managed and supported”. Where did you read the word “surpass”. See how not reading properly exposes the complete ignorance of people like you? Between you who hides behind social media to deceive yourself and a very well known and well made man, who is a fraud? |

We are not sure if OBI is stable. His statements is always incoherent and impractical. |

It is very true.Do you even know the usd value of textiles we import from Asia annually? Now imagine if all that domestic demand is met locally and a big surplus is still produced and exported.Lets leave ethnicity and religion and use our brains.Good leadership is critical Richtaiwo: |

tunjijones:This stale question makes no sense! Just because you are in an economic team doesn't imply your ideas will be taken or even implemented! And yes every raw material in Nigeria if properly harnessed and processed can generate revenues close to that of oil! |

bentenny:He shd have told GEJ then, even if he listens or not, but it will be on record that obi adviced Jonathan about making aba an industrial hub which will generate money more than the oil and gas industry but Jonathan didn't listen. The point is, they always have bright ideas when they are out of government. |

Okechinwadike:Most of you know nothing and this is why you follow Mr Obi blindly. China produces oil more than Nigeria and they are one of the oil most producing nation in the world. China produces about 4.3 milion - 4.9 million per barrel of oil everyday. They are a major producer and one of the world's largest consumers of oil. |

bentenny:Yes but only if all economic activities enters the tax net and half the GDP is taken as tax as is normal in many countries. Cassava alone could generate a lot of money not to talk of other food. |

Okechinwadike:China produces at least 3 times what Nigeria produces daily. Not all oil producing countries are part of OPEC. China is producing close to 5 million barrels per day compared to Nigeria's 1.5 million barrels per day. https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/chinas-record-oil-output-reaches-limits-whats-possible-2026-03-20/ |

higgs:This is the reality on ground in Nigeria. Aba or Abia state does not produce textiles more than some states. This is the situation: Production Status: The sector has experienced a continued downward trend, with many mills closed and 145 companies failing between 1980 and 2016, leaving fewer than four operational by early 2025. Import Surge: Nigeria’s textile imports skyrocketed to N1.06 trillion in 2025, up from N726.18 billion in 2024, showing a massive reliance on imports. Export Decline: Textile exports dropped by 55.25% in 2025 to N16.55 billion from N36.98 billion in 2024. Key Production Areas/States: Kaduna & Kano: Traditionally, these states were hubs for large-scale textile mills. While severely impacted, they remain strategic for future industrial clusters. Lagos: Remains a hub for both small-scale fashion production and surviving large-scale manufacturers. Abeokuta, Ibadan, and Osogbo: Key centers for Adire (traditional tie-dye) production, with Abeokuta considered the "capital". And as for shoes,Yikodeen in Lagos is the largest producer of shoes in the whole of West Africa with other millions of shoe makers scattered around Lagos. |

Amumaigwe:Mr smart and not ignorant man... AKA AI merchant. If you can not put two and two together from comments then don't bother responding to them. You went and copied from AI to answer part of my comments. But failed to answer the first paragraph which is the core and nuance of my statement. When obi was governor of anambra state how many such world class industries did he build? Use nnewi as a case study when responding to my question. Talk is cheap! |

[quote author=Richtaiwo post=138924433]Here he goes again with another dubious claim. Aba footwear surpassing Nigeria’s oil revenue? If that were true, what is stopping them from fully pursuing such a lucrative venture? This fraud needs to learn to distinguish between fantasy and reality, because Nigerians are far more concerned with facts than with superficial claims that can convince a baby goat.
