On the 27th of March, 1977, the deadliest accident in commercial aviation history occurred at Los Rodeos Airport in Tenerife, resulting in 583 fatalities. Dense fog, diverted traffic, and critical miscommunications led to a runway collision between two Boeing 747 aircraft operated by KLM and Pan Am.

The two aircraft had landed at Los Rodeos earlier that Sunday and were among a number of aircraft diverted to Los Rodeos due to a bomb explosion at their intended destination of Gran Canaria Airport. Los Rodeos had become congested with parked planes blocking the only taxiway, forcing departing aircraft to taxi on the runway. Patches of thick fog were drifting across the airfield, so visibility was greatly reduced for pilots and the control tower

The KLM crew initiated their takeoff run without authorization while the Pan Am jet was still taxiing down the same active runway. According to the official cockpit voice recorder transcript, the KLM flight engineer questioned the situation by asking, "Is he not clear then, that Pan Am?" The highly experienced KLM captain ignored the question and continued the takeoff.

The incident occurred at 5:06 pm GMT (UTC +0) in dense fog, when KLM Flight 4805 initiated its takeoff run, colliding with the starboard side of Pan Am Flight 1736, which was on the runway. The impact and the resulting fire killed all 248 people on board the KLM plane and 335 of the 396 people on board the Pan Am plane, with all 61 survivors being in the front section of the latter aircraft.

An investigation by Spanish authorities concluded that the primary cause of the accident was the KLM captain's decision to take off in the mistaken belief that air traffic control (ATC) had issued takeoff clearance. Dutch investigators placed a greater emphasis on a mutual misunderstanding in radio communications between the KLM crew and ATC, but ultimately KLM admitted that its crew was responsible for the accident and the airline agreed to financially compensate the relatives of all of the victims.

The crash caused the aviation industry to completely change flight deck procedures and communication standards. Investigators determined that the rigid rank structure of the cockpit prevented junior crew members from challenging a captain's decisions. In response, airlines implemented Crew Resource Management training, which mandates that all crew members state safety concerns regardless of their rank. As noted in Federal Aviation Administration training documents, "high technical proficiency cannot guarantee safe operations in the absence of effective crew coordination." Furthermore, international regulators standardized aviation radio phrases, ensuring the word "takeoff" is exclusively used when clearance is actively given or canceled, preventing similar misunderstandings.

We'll never forget the 583 lives that were lost that day 💔.

Here’s the Pan Am cockpit crew shortly after the crash: Captain Victor Grubbs and First Officer Robert Bragg.

And for anyone wondering, yes the Pan Am flight deck crew survived the impact (Captain, First Officer, and Flight Engineer George Warns)

Clipper Victor - the Panam plane involved in this unfortunate collision accident seemed destined because it has some unique history in the advent of jumbo jet in long distant flight aviation history.

-1). It is the First Jumbo Jet to Undergo Testing and Subsequently, Enter Commercial Aviation History

February 9, 1969.Grey skies over Everett, Washington. A crowd gathered along the runway. Cameras ready, because this wasn’t just another test flight. It was a gamble. It looked too big to fly… which is exactly why everyone was watching.

At 11:34 a.m., Jack Waddell advanced the throttles. The Boeing 747, the largest passenger aircraft ever built at the time began to roll. Slowly at first. Then faster. At 164 mph, the nose lifted. And just like that,it flew.

They called the aircraft “City of Everett.” There were just three men on board.
The flight lasted 1 hour and 15 minutes. When Waddell stepped off the aircraft, he didn’t describe it as difficult. He called it: “a pilot’s dream.” Said he could fly it with just a thumb and forefinger.

Which feels almost understated, given what it represented. Because at that point, Boeing had effectively bet the company on this aircraft. Critics had been quite clear: Too big.
Too heavy. Too risky. And yet, in a single flight..those concerns became harder to sustain.

Less than a year later, Pan Am flew the first commercial 747 from New York to London. Over time, Boeing would build 1,574 of them. And the aircraft that wasn’t supposed to work became something else entirely. The Queen of the Skies.

The stubborn KLM captain just took more than 500 lives of innocent people. This was just a monumental disaster in aviation world. God rest the soul of those the world lost. It was indeed a sad avoidable tragedy

Overconfidence of the "highly experienced KLM captain" killed the 583 people.

If it happened in Nigeria, that voice recorder would never have been found.

I'm still very uncomfortable when on flight

Alakoba oversabi pilot. They say he is an experienced captain because he knows too much. His mistake and impatience did not only cost his life but the life of more than 500 souls which he dragged along with him to the great beyond.

This is just too tragic. Imagine about 500 people locked up in plane and burning alive

Everyone in the KLM plane whose pilot caused the error died, including the oversabi pilot

Everyone involved was culpable. But in my opinion the tower crew and airport management should have been held ultimately responsible. They should never in their lives have given permission to the PANAM jet to start engines not to talk of taxing in those conditions.

Your airport is tiny, no ground radar and you depend on physical visibility, clear sight lines to navigate aircraft through dense fog, while depending on radio communications with aircrews that could not even see the taxiway markings and signposts....That is criminal neglect.

It is like a bustling restaurant that sells hot steamy soup, blindfolding its waiters and expects nothing other than lawsuits.

The tower is the ultimate gatekeeper of the airport and valet to departing and arriving aircraft. No pilot can even start his engines without express permission.

Just recalled the unfortunate air mishap that took the lives of everyone onboard in 1991, involving Nigerian Airwayz

Jacob van zanten or so. With over 30 years flight experience. One of the best. The junior officers argued that there was not enough distance of intervisibility but he didn't listen. PanAm was still in the runway trying to access a hangar that was too small and too acute for such a big plane. While they were still contemplating what to do, KLM took off in the darkness. The rest is history

Airplanes crashing is somehow and even more accident-threateningly than cars nowadays. It actually happened at the airport when passengers are preparing to takeoff. Just imagine!

Road, air, water, i don't even know which one is safe.

In dis case, its God that will see one through, not human intelligence.

Truth be told.

Most of the blame should go to the airport traffic controllers.

You cant see any plane on the runway due to bad weather and you tell a plane to take off.

CWezzy!
