It had everything to do with the misrule of the former shah, his role in the coup against the former prime Minister mosedegh, the US and UK involvement in that coup and most importantly, the fact that the people of Iran chased the shah away. The Ayatollah had been a prominent opposition to the shah and at a time, went on exile to turkey and then Iraq. The crisis that ensued after mosedegh was overthrown and put on house arrest after serving a 3 year term for treason, was what brought the Ayatollah back to lead the Iranian revolution. At the time, majority of the people voted overwhelmingly for the country to become an Islamic republic. It's a shame to see people like you spread false narratives that the ayatollah conquered Iran and forced them to become an Islamic republic.
