lagos Court Jails Man 30 Years Over $62,500, €36,020 Fraud by Ironfaceman(op): 7:23pm On Mar 31
A Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja has convicted and sentenced Olumuyiwa Teniola Idowu and his company, Tennyvans Nigeria Limited, to a total of 30 years’ imprisonment over fraud involving $62,500 and €36,020.

In a statement by the EFCC, the judgment was delivered on Monday, March 30, 2026, by Justice Ismail Ijelu, who found the defendants guilty on a six-count charge bordering on stealing and failure to declare assets.

The offences were said to be in violation of Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011, and Section 27(3) of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Act, 2004, which deal with non-disclosure of assets and refusal to declare properties.

One of the charges presented in court stated:

“Olumuyiwa Teniola Idowu and Tennyvans Nigeria Limited, sometime in 2012 at Lagos within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, dishonestly converted to your own use the sum of $62,500 (Sixty-Two Thousand Five Hundred United States Dollars), being the cost of caterpillar parts, property of Rene Theodorous Johannes Brouwers of Brouwers USA Trucks and Parts.

Another charge stated: “Olumuyiwa Teniola Idowu and Tennyvans Nigeria Limited, sometime in 2012 at Lagos within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, dishonestly converted to your own use the sum of €36,020 being the cost and shipping of a DAF truck, box trailer and two (2) tippers, property of Rene Theodorous Johannes Brouwers of Brouwers USA Trucks and Parts B.V.”

The defendant was first arraigned on November 27, 2024, where he pleaded not guilty, leading to a full trial

During the proceedings, the prosecuting counsel, E. S. Okongwu, called three witnesses and presented eleven exhibits, all of which were admitted by the court. The defence counsel, Kehinde Olawumi, called one witness

In his judgment, Justice Ijelu held that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt and consequently found the defendant guilty as charged.

The court sentenced Idowu to five years’ imprisonment on counts one to four, to run concurrently. He was also handed five years’ imprisonment on counts five and six, with an option of a fine of N1 million on each count, to be paid within six months or serve the custodial sentences

The court further ordered that the sum of $62,500 and €36,020 be returned to the nominal complainant within six months

Following the judgment, the convict was remanded at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre

Can someone explain this sentence to me?

There's an option of bail, 1million naira on each count. What does that mean, Freedom after meeting the bail conditions?

Read well

Understand " concurrent" sentences.

He will fully restitute the entire amount. AND go to jail OR pay the fine.

The first counts attracted 5 years imprisonment each to run concurrently, so no matter what he will stay in prison for 5 years. Not 30 years though.

The other counts he can choose to pay the 1 million fine, if he doesn't it will be part of his prison time.

But im sure he won't pay, as all the sentences have started running at the same time and it's all 5 years.

It's not 30 years. It is 5 years because all the sentences will run concurrently.

You are wrong. Only counts 1-4 are to run concurrently. The other 5 years sentence for counts 5 & 6 are separate and he will get to serve the 5 years if he fails to pay N1million fine option on each count 5 & 6. In all, it's 10 years not 5 years.

read the sentencing well.
The first 5 years on count 1- 4 to run concurrently= Ie 5years jail.

5 years on count 5-6 with option of fine.
This means on 5&6 he can pay N1m fine to avoid the jail time.
The total sentencing guyman has is 5 years (assuming option of fine on the first 4 counts is not there.)
Now prison time is usually 8 months year not the normal 12. That means the guy will spend 40 months or 3 years and 4 months.
If time already spent in custody is taken into consideration, the guy may end up spending lesser time or even be freed immediately. The guy was arranged 2024 ie 2 years ago, that could add to reduce his jail time.

What it means is that he won't go to jail. It is deceptive sentencing for headline.
The very rich man will easily pay the money and go home

The man won't go to jail. He was basically sentenced to fine.
That's Nigeria's corrupt, deceptive sentencing for headlines.
Option of fine means he pays the fine (which is nothing to him) and go home!
