Madam, go and build your own house and give it out for free. You won't hold government responsible, it's a private person who invested his money that's your problem. Go and live under the bridge if you like. |

potent5:but this isn’t just about a private individual it’s about broader economic conditions and the role of government in creating a stable environment for businesses and citizens. People can invest their money, but when issues affect many citizens at once, it becomes a public concern. We can hold both individuals and government accountable where necessary without attacking each other. |

potent5: potent5:I once met an agent who said the same thing you just posted, almost word for word. Funny thing is, he lived in a dirty face-me-I-face-you single room of 5k per month in Bariga. He said this when I complained about the substandard nature of the 2 bedroom flat he was showing me for 3.5m at Mende, Maryland. Maybe you're even the one self. |

thesicilian:As the OP, I’ll say this clearly this discussion is not about attacking individuals or guessing who anyone is. Let’s keep it focused on the main issue rather than turning it into personal assumptions. Contributions are welcome, but let’s keep it civil and on topic |

Why are we hypocritical about economic issues? Prices of other commodities including petrol have quadrupled. Some of you are business men who have increased the price of their goods four folds in the last 3 years. But landlords have not increased their rents four folds like some of you, but you people want to crucify landlords. Is it by force to live in another person's house? davidotokiblog1: |

There are lotta cheap apartments some places, she just want to live in one where the water is being pumped and rent for cheap. She should go and move in back with her parents if she can't afford house rent. |

Rent price is based on market forces: demand & supply. "Trending" videos shouldn't try to bring sentiment into it Probably the real issue here could be the absence of an effective mortgage system that will enable more salary earners eventually own their own houses over time... davidotokiblog1: |
| Re: “₦2.5M Rent?” – Lady Blasts Benin Landlords In Viral Video by davidotokiblog1(op): 6:32am On Apr 01 |
potent5:I understand your point, but it’s not hypocrisy it’s about fairness and living conditions. Yes, prices of goods and petrol have increased, but income hasn’t increased at the same rate for most people. Housing is a basic need, not a luxury, so people will naturally speak up when rent becomes too high for what is being offered. Also, the issue many people raise is not just the increase, but the value when rent goes up but the standard of the property remains poor, that’s where the concern comes in. Nobody is saying landlords shouldn’t make profit, but there should be a balance. At the end of the day, both economic realities and human living conditions should be considered. |

Kaczynski:But it’s not always that simple. ‘Cheap’ apartments often come with serious issues poor water supply, bad infrastructure, or unsafe environments. That’s exactly why people complain, not just about price but about the standard of living. Telling people to just move back to their parents doesn’t address the real issue. The discussion is about fair pricing and decent living conditions, not avoiding responsibility. Everyone deserves a reasonable place to live for what they pay. |
| Re: “₦2.5M Rent?” – Lady Blasts Benin Landlords In Viral Video by davidotokiblog1(op): 6:37am On Apr 01 |
werisetogether:You’re right that rent is influenced by demand and supply, and the mortgage issue is a valid point too. But the conversation isn’t only about market forces it’s also about how those forces affect real people. When demand is high and supply is low, prices will rise, but that doesn’t automatically justify poor standards or lack of basic amenities. That’s where people begin to question value for money. And yes, a functional mortgage system would help in the long run, but that doesn’t remove the need for fairness and decent living conditions in the current rental market. Both things can be addressed at the same time. |

The federal government has a mortgage bank. Why is it not working? If you go to other countries, you can approach the mortgage bank for a loan to build your home or they give you a house and you pay small small. Why are Nigerians not taking their pains to the government? A functional mortgage system will solve accommodation problem by 50%. davidotokiblog1: |

The bigger picture here is that government has failed in providing affordable housing and that's a part that is often overlooked. How many affordable units did Okpebolho promise Edo people? How many did FG promise? You are not asking the right questions. Even if the State promises rent control, people respond to market forces. What has the government provided that will force private people to not have ridiculous prices? If the government is involved in their social duty, we won't be here but where they don't, private will fill in the gap. It's like how we have failed in every other sector such as education, health, infrastructure and you name it.

I'm about relocating to the village cos I can no longer afford my rent. From 250k, landlord increased it to 350k. He's coming to eject me soon despite all my pleas to accept the initial rent at least for one year |

potent5:Mortgage will only work for government workers whereby the money is automatically removed from their monthly salary. Nigerians are not known for paying back loans and a lot of Nigeria factors can prevent those who truly want to pay back along the line. |

You can't blame all these greedy landlords. WHEN DID GOVERNMENT IS VERY VERY IRRESPONSIBLE. When last did any government build and commission houses for the civil civil servants, not to talk of the common man? |

potent5:The federal mortgage bank works. Some of the major banks eg first bank also provide mortgages. The problem is income. Most nigerians work in the informal sector, so they can't afford a sustainable way of paying back their mortgages on time, but yes, we have a working mortgage system And yeah, even in sane countries, people run into problems paying back their mortgages. |

I think government authorities should intervene. Shelter is a fundamental human need. Landlords are killing people with their rent. |
