A video currently trending online has sparked reactions after a Nigerian lady called out the high cost of rent in Lagos.

In the video, she talked about how some landlords build houses and describe them as “Lekki standard,” then go ahead to charge as high as ₦2.5 million per year.

She also pointed out something that got many people talking some landlords still place restrictions on tenants despite the high rent.

According to her, the big question is how many Nigerians earning normal salaries can afford such amount in today’s economy.

Why are we hypocritical about economic issues? Prices of other commodities including petrol have quadrupled. Some of you are business men who have increased the price of their goods four folds in the last 3 years. But landlords have not increased their rents four folds like some of you, but you people want to crucify landlords. Is it by force to live in another person's house?

There are lotta cheap apartments some places, she just want to live in one where the water is being pumped and rent for cheap. She should go and move in back with her parents if she can't afford house rent.

I understand your point, but it’s not hypocrisy it’s about fairness and living conditions. Yes, prices of goods and petrol have increased, but income hasn’t increased at the same rate for most people. Housing is a basic need, not a luxury, so people will naturally speak up when rent becomes too high for what is being offered.

Also, the issue many people raise is not just the increase, but the value when rent goes up but the standard of the property remains poor, that’s where the concern comes in.

Nobody is saying landlords shouldn’t make profit, but there should be a balance. At the end of the day, both economic realities and human living conditions should be considered.

The bigger picture here is that government has failed in providing affordable housing and that's a part that is often overlooked.

You are not asking the right questions. Even if the State promises rent control, people respond to market forces. What has the government provided that will force private people to not have ridiculous prices? If the government is involved in their social duty, we won't be here but where they don't, private will fill in the gap. It's like how we have failed in every other sector such as education, health, infrastructure and you name it.

You can get a mortgage in Nigeria from the FHA, and from banks like first bank and several other banks...and some mortgage banks like infinity bank, etc.

Nigerians are not known for paying back loans and a lot of Nigeria factors can prevent those who truly want to pay back along the line.

The federal mortgage bank works. Some of the major banks eg first bank also provide mortgages.

The problem is income. Most nigerians work in the informal sector, so they can't afford a sustainable way of paying back their mortgages on time, but yes, we have a working mortgage system

And yeah, even in sane countries, people run into problems paying back their mortgages.

I think government authorities should intervene. Shelter is a fundamental human need. Landlords are killing people with their rent.
