Governor Dapo Abiodun Supports Autism Awareness Campaign With ₦20m Donation by Ainaolusegun(op): 6:13am On Apr 01
Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has donated twenty million naira to support the “Cycling for Autism with KanyeChukwu” initiative, as part of activities marking World Autism Awareness Day.

The governor made the announcement while receiving the campaign team at his office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

Governor Abiodun emphasized that autism is not a disease, but a unique condition that requires understanding, patience, and proper care.

The governor described children living with autism as gifted individuals whose potential can be unlocked with the right support and dedication.

He praised 16-year-old Nigerian artist and autism advocate, Kanyeyachukwu Tagbo-Okeke, for his remarkable achievements.

The teenager, who lives with non-verbal autism, holds a 2025 Guinness World Record for creating the world’s largest art canvas in Abuja.

The governor also commended the young artist’s parents for nurturing his talent and refusing to see his condition as a limitation, noting that their efforts serve as inspiration to other families.

He urged parents of children with autism to focus on discovering and developing their children’s abilities, rather than allowing them to be marginalized.

Earlier, Kanye’s father had highlighted the need for greater awareness and support, noting that autism care can be expensive and that there is a shortage of trained caregivers in Nigeria..

He explained that the “Cycling for Autism” campaign is traveling across several states, raising awareness in communities, schools, and religious centres, while also seeking to train at least one thousand autism caregivers nationwide.

The initiative, supported by the Cycling Federation of Nigeria, is expected to cover over 600 kilometres across the country.

For this, I'm going to say thumbs up to the governor for doing this. Autistic people and their families don;t get much of support.

Even then, mr governor, also focus on developing a good enough health, education and social welfare system that works for all, autistic people included.

Election is coming, best time to start caring

One would wonder, which miraculous thing did Dapo Abiodun do in Ogun state for almost 8 years that made him to still be thinking about going for Senate in 2027? The same question goes to OGD

Abeg, imagine the current minister of darkness, Adelabu dreaming of governing Oyo state in 2027?

Are we being unfortunate in South West or we are not just paying attention to the clueless people who have been representing us for decades

And governance, is that a small thing despite the failure of this governor and others since 1999 in Ogun and other states to provide basic services and utilities with adequate number of well paid civil servants huh

Good governance from the Governor
How is autism a more fundamental governance need than free education for all children, in Awolowo's state that has been administered by progressive APC governors for 27 years huh

What is Eleyi's performance on free education?
Has he employed up to 19,500 teachers in his tenure like Makinde has done in just five years as governor of neighbouring Oyo state?

I just want to ask, when governors donate this kind of money, is it from their pockets or state coffers?
They should be letting us know

That’s fantastic.

Autistic people must be given the chance to live. Autism is not the fault of the child. Hopefully more action can be taken on this pressing issue.

Thank you to the Pastor who got a wife for his autistic child. Everyone, irrespective of health status, is equal before God. If he is able, the wife should ensure that she bears a child or children with him, to preserve his own generation. The Pastor did very well, handing him over to a matured woman, who irrespective of previous child bearing, should be able to take care of him.

Thank you once again to the Governor.

The part about Kanye - 16 years old, non-verbal autism, Guinness World Record holder - that one genuinely moved me. The parents deserve recognition too, because in Nigeria raising an autistic child without proper support systems in place is not small work.

Question though: does anyone know if there are trained autism caregivers or early screening centers outside Lagos and Abuja? Always feels like these kinds of support services exist only in the major cities while families everywhere else manage alone.
