Good morning house, Have you ever finished a full day of work and then sat there thinking: what exactly did I just do for the past 8 hours? I had this problem. I tried tracking manually by writing down every app I used and every task I switched to. I lasted 2 days before I gave up. It was painful. So I looked for an app that could do it for me. I found a few: RescueTime, Hubstaff, Time Doctor. But they all had the same issue: they were designed for employers to monitor employees. Screenshots every few minutes. Keystroke logging. Productivity scores sent to your boss. I didn't want a surveillance tool. I wanted something for ME. Something that just tells me honestly where my day went. So I built it. What is DayLens? DayLens is a free Windows desktop app that silently tracks every application and website you use throughout the day, then gives you a complete breakdown of how you spent your time. How it works: It runs in the background; you don't touch it during the day. It records which apps you use and for how long (polls every 6 seconds). A browser extension (Chrome/Brave/Edge) tracks which specific websites and tabs you visit. It intelligently categorizes everything: Deep Work, Communication, Learning, Entertainment, etc. At the end of the day, you get a Day Summary with a professional time log. Smart features: Groups scattered activities together (3 email checks across the morning = one "Communication" row). Detects meetings in the background (Teams/Zoom running while you multitask = full meeting time captured). YouTube tutorials are categorized as Learning, not Entertainment. LinkedIn job searching is Deep Work, not Social Media. Detects when you're idle (keyboard/mouse inactive for 5 min stops tracking, even if screen is on). Prevents overnight false tracking (laptop charging with screen on won't record fake hours). What it does NOT do: No screenshots. No keystroke logging. No data sent anywhere. Everything stays in a local SQLite database on your machine. No account creation. No subscription (completely free). No employer dashboard. This is for YOU, not your boss. Tech stack (for the developers here): Electron 29 SQLite via sql.js (WebAssembly) Window detection via PowerShell + Win32 API (GetForegroundWindow, GetLastInputInfo) Chrome Extension Manifest V3 + local WebSocket on 127.0.0.1 Optional AI integration: Puter.js (free), Google Gemini, or OpenAI Source code: https://github.com/alagemoo/dayslens Download: https://github.com/alagemoo/dayslens/releases/download/v1.2.3/DayLens-Setup-1.2.3.exe I built this because I needed it. If you fill a timesheet at work, or you're a freelancer who bills by the hour, or you just want to know where your time actually goes, try it. I'm actively developing this. Your feedback will directly shape the next version. Gideon Aniechi https://valiontech.com
