Before the country called Nigeria existed, the land already had a long and rich history filled with ancient cultures, kingdoms, trade, religion, and power. The Nok civilization is one of the earliest known cultures in the region, and long before colonial rule, the land was already home to Hausa states, Kanem-Borno, Benin, Oyo, Igbo communities, and many other peoples.

Nigeria as a country is modern, but the land is ancient. The British did not create the people or the kingdoms. They only joined different regions together, gave the territory a name, and later ruled it as a colony. That is why the real history of Nigeria goes far deeper than the date of independence.

The full story includes the Nok, the old kingdoms, the arrival of the British, the 1914 amalgamation, independence, and the wars and struggles that shaped the country we know today.
