Jos Attack: Impose Sanctions On Nigeria – Mark Harris Writes Secretary Rubio by CyynthiaKiss(op): 10:28pm On Apr 02
A United States lawmaker, Mark Harris, has urged Secretary of State, Marco Rubio to impose sanctions on Nigeria over what he described as worsening violence against Christians.

In a letter dated April 2, 2026, Harris raised concerns about what he called escalating persecution of Christians in Nigeria and Syria, saying the situation requires urgent attention from the U.S. government.

He argued that attacks on Christian communities go beyond political unrest, describing them as violations of human dignity, religious freedom and fundamental rights that governments are obligated to protect.

The congressman called on the U.S. State Department to pressure both Nigeria and Syria to take decisive steps to safeguard Christian populations, noting that many have been killed, displaced or subjected to repeated attacks.

Harris acknowledged previous U.S. measures, including the designation of Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern and actions targeting extremist groups, but said recent incidents remain alarming.

He cited reports of a Palm Sunday attack in Plateau State in which at least 30 people were reportedly killed, describing it as part of a broader pattern of violence against Christians.

According to him, such incidents are not isolated, but reflect a growing trend of attacks allegedly carried out by Islamic militants, with governments either failing to respond adequately or downplaying the severity.

In Nigeria, reports indicate that at least 30 people were killed in a Palm Sunday massacre in Plateau State, which is yet another horrifying reminder that Christians in parts of Nigeria continue to face deadly violence with far too little protection or accountability from the Nigerian government.

“The fact is, these are not isolated incidents. They are part of a broader and growing pattern of anti-Christian violence plaguing both countries at the hands of Islamic militants, while both governments continue to either ignore or downplay the severity of these attacks, and Christians continue to pay the price.”

Harris asked the State Department to clarify steps taken in response to the violence and what consequences could be imposed if Nigeria and Syria fail to act.

He also queried whether the U.S. is considering additional measures such as sanctions, visa restrictions or conditions on aid to compel stronger action from the affected countries.

The lawmaker stressed that the situation is particularly concerning as Christians mark the Holy Week, noting that many in affected regions continue to worship under fear or mourn victims of violence.

Such a shame that it is foreigners that feel the urgency to act over our insecurity, rather than our so called leaders.

Everybody should collect laslas. Both genocide callers and deniers. Use your head to always rebuff external interests in your affairs. Anybody who's followed the trajectory of the US knows that they intervene to places only to worsen the situation.
Even if northern and Southern Nigeria were separate countries. The instability of one will surely affect the other just like the crisis in Libya and Mali found its way into Nigeria in a short time.

And the sanction is supposed to help whom?

Why is America being governed by retards.

The people that are sponsoring terrorism will never be affected by any sanction.

It still gonna affect common man in Nigeria.

Sanction is not enough because it is the Nigerian masses that will suffer it.

You need to go extreme to force failed Nigerian government to act because they can stop or curtail this if they see it as a priority like they saw the coup d'etat in Benin Republic last year where they acted swiftly.

Punish the ruling class that are enabling these religious terrorism and ethnic cleansing.

Seize their assets in all Western nations and ban their kids from coming to Western countries.

And lastly help us enforce democracy so that the people can choose their leaders who they can hold accountable and not leaders who use state institutions to foist themselves on Nigerians against their wish, that's the only way America can help Nigerians end this terrorism madness being enabled by the failed APC regime angry

As much as it pains me to say it, but this might just be what we need to sit up as a country.

During the Palestine - Israel conflict, Femi Fani Kayode was very vocal, speaking about the lives of those in Gaza while completely ignoring the wellbeing of his fellow Nigerians being slaughtered by Fulani Islamic terrorists.

The other day Pantami was crying like a child for the Ayatollah, meanwhile back home thousands have been slaughtered.

A government where its officials are more concerned about the happenings in places thousands of kilometres away while ignoring its own people should be made to bear the consequences of its ineptitude and utter disregard for the lives of its citizens. If a sanction would return our sense of urgency and teach the government to prioritize the wellbeing of its people, then so be it.

How does that solve the problem? Would economic sanctions deter the Fulani and Islamic terrorists who make their money from ransom payments?

As if the sanctions will affect those in authority(it will only create more hardship on the populace). Has your sanctions ever worked where you have used them? Russia, North Korea, Iran etc.

Sovereign nation that cannot protect its own citizen... It's not because of lact of fund or resources rather due to corrupt leaders...
Infact Sanction everybody...

Meanwhile...west as contributed hugely to the downfall of Africa at large...

Routed fund and resources goes to the west as investment, and they keep quite using it to build their own system, be it money... natural resources or even human resources...same goes for Russia and China..
Who keeps funding instability in Nigeria in Nigeria in other to keep exploring and exploiting our natural and human resources

You have made no point. So you mean no one should intervene when it is obvious that nigerian government pays no heed.

Life is meaningless in Nigeria, human life has no value, people die like chickens on a daily basis, people are killed daily and no one cares not even Nigerians themselves they don’t realize that it will come to their doorsteps soon

The most painful part for me is After most of the killings instead of the terrorists and their terrorist sympathizers to attack the killers or the government for not providing security they will go on to blame people who are angry and sad about the killing, they will tell you not to be angry or react angrily after they killed your friendship, families, brothers and sisters in Christ, fellow citizens, they are reducing your population, putting fear in the minds and hearts of everyone and still telling you how you should feel about it and how you should grief. God how heartless can someone be it’s obvious they believe the killers are on their side and advancing their course.

In saner climes such people especially on twitter, especially those who have some level of clout and government exposure will not only be called in for questioning but they will be surveilled, their calls would be wired tapped, their movements would be monitored.

Those terrorists can’t work alone, they need financiers, gun runners, informants, supporters at various levels. And such people I don’t want to call names but some of them are very famous online obviously are in support of their actions and must have some level of insider knowledge however little and need to be investigated.

Better! Successive Presidents have repeatedly failed to take action on actionable intelligence provided by the security agencies warning them of impending attacks. I apologise publicly to DSS, DMI, THE POLICE AND SECURITY AGENCIES I had previously criticised for not doing intel work in the matter. I have since realised that they do their jobs but the required executive actions were not taken for whatever reasons. Very bad conduct coming from our leaders!
