The anticipated defection of Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been stalled, as the governor failed to make the expected move to either the African Democratic Congress (ADC) or the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Despite mounting speculation and intense political consultations, the planned switch did not take place on Thursday, leaving observers uncertain about the governor’s next political step.

Although Mohammed is set to complete his second term next year, he has reportedly been heavily courted by both the ruling APC and the ADC, the latter currently grappling with internal challenges.

Only a day earlier, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced it was withdrawing recognition of the ADC’s National Working Committee led by David Mark, citing compliance with a Court of Appeal ruling.

It remains unclear whether this development influenced the governor’s decision to delay his defection or whether he is still weighing offers from both parties.

Sources indicated that Mohammed has been engaged in high-level consultations, following separate meetings with APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, and ADC chieftain, Babachir Lawal, earlier in the week.

Contrary to public expectations of a formal declaration, there was no scheduled political event in Bauchi on Thursday.

A source familiar with the situation disclosed that the governor was not in the state, adding that he had travelled to continue consultations with key political allies and stakeholders.

“The governor is not even in Bauchi, as we speak. His Excellency appears to have travelled out of the state to hold further consultations with his political family and stakeholders outside Bauchi,” the source said.

The development underscores the fluid nature of Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections, with alliances and defections continuing to shape the balance of power.
