Northern Nigeria has less than three million Southerners resident there Some people base their argument that Nigeria should not divide on a claim that there are millions of Southerners in the North and millions of Northerners in the South but I have debunked this claim with actual research. I am a scientist and researcher and my final year thesis was published in a foremost journal without me soliciting for it or patronizing anybody. I merely submitted it and then I was summoned by my supervisor. That was in OAU and when some people who are Professors today were still in high school. Therefore I quite understand the scientific method. I know for a fact that the percentage of non Yoruba in Osun state is less than three percent because I grew up there and went to school there. I still belong to the WhatsApp groups of both my primary and secondary schools and both have less than three percent non Yoruba. I attended churches in Osun and stayed in neighborhoods. There is therefore no doubt that my conclusion is correct. I can say that if the fact is true for Osun state given it's level of urbanization and number of urban centers then the average Northern state will have less than three percent of their population as Southerners. If the population of the North is around 110 million, then the total number of Southerners in the North will be less than three million without adding Abuja the federal capital territory to the mix. Don't argue with me, just provide proof that I am wrong by posting the ethnic composition of ten random classrooms in Northern Nigeria. While it is true that Lagos contains the largest diaspora population of most groups in Nigeria just as London probably contains the largest diaspora population of the Yoruba outside Yoruba land or outside Nigeria, it does not mean Nigeria must continue existing just because of that despite all the attendant negative baggage. Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Kaduna, Kano, Enugu, Jos, Ibadan and etc will continue being cosmopolitan cities in their own respect regardless of whatever happens. The number of Southerners in the North and Northerners in the South, Easterners in the west, westerners in the East and etc is negligible and it should not even be an issue |

3 percent is a very liberal estimate even. If we are talking of non Yoruba northerners In Osun then they will be less than one percent of the population and this means the average Northern state is likely to have less than one percent of the population as Southerners. This means the total number of Southerners in Northern Nigeria will be closer to 1.5 million than 3 million |

lawani:Where do you get this your stats from? The numbers of southerners in ABJ alone is over 3m |

Following, what methodology did you use to arrive at this conclusion. |
| Re: There Are Less Than Three Million Southerners In The North. by lawani(op): 9:38pm On Apr 05 |
Parachoko:I said without Abuja and Abuja will have more Northerners than Southerners. Abuja is purportedly like 4 million. Total southerners in Abuja will be less than two million. |

Igbofirstfarmer:I have explained how I can be disproved and I also explained how I got my data. I am waiting for someone to disprove me |

Parachoko:Try and read properly. He made it clear his summation excludes Abuja. If the population of the North is around 110 million, then the total number of Southerners in the North will be less than three million without adding Abuja the federal capital territory to the mix. |

Apt. So what are you inferring? |
| Re: There Are Less Than Three Million Southerners In The North. by WizardOfNG: 10:00pm On Apr 05 |
lawani:Few Nigerians are interested in exhaustive research so don't expect many to disprove your summation I personally think is plausible. I am Yoruba and have a big and considerably extended family. We don't have a single member in the North. Abuja yes but nowhere else in the entire core North (North East and North West) or North Central even. Unless there is specifically a reason to live in the North, I don't believe many South West folks will choose the region to live in and raise a family in. |

WizardOfNG:You are right but many are there. A Google search will show that Yoruba mechanic workshops in Kano are many. A random Google search shows staff members of a department in ABU to be like majority Yoruba and etc. I have cousins that went to Unimaid and etc. Someone I met in OAU said the largest student union in ABU was Ondo state union. Christians were attacked in Jos in 2008 or so and a majority of Southerners killed were Yoruba. However total southerners in the North will be between 1.5 million and 3 million while Yoruba in North will exceed ten million including Northerners who are Yoruba but not including members of the Beerebe or Yorubawa community whose communities were established by Yorubas but have no relatives in Yoruba land any longer that they know of |

WhizdomXX:I am clear enough now. Many people say Nigeria should not break up because many Southerners are in the North or Northerners in the South |

lawani:Okay but that is just scratching the surface. |
| Re: There Are Less Than Three Million Southerners In The North. by lawani(op): 10:59pm On Apr 05 |
WhizdomXX:Do you have any reason to believe Southerners in the North exceed 1.5 to 3 million individuals? |
| Re: There Are Less Than Three Million Southerners In The North. by WhizdomXX(m): 11:06pm On Apr 05 |
lawani:I meant the point is only scratching the surface of the real reasons of those people don't want this country to be separated. |
| Re: There Are Less Than Three Million Southerners In The North. by AMINDA: 11:06pm On Apr 05 |
lawani:Now that defeat is staring you and Tinubu in the face, you suddenly want Nigeria to break up abi? Why then did Tinubu jail Nnamdi Kanu and why has Sunday Igboho given up his "Yoruba nessan" agitations to become an APC apologist? Una think say una wise abi? Well, Tinubu has less than 8 months to divide the country. Any agitations for breakup after he's voted out by the rest of Nigerians shall be met with brute force. |

AMINDA:I have been advocating for breakup for years. Hopefully it will happen. Tinubu has not mentioned that he is in support of a breakup or has he? You don't have anything to fight with. What brute force? Nigeria is not a super power o and even USSR a super power disintegrated without hassles. Sudan disintegrated and etc |

The clown who wrote this article probably hasn't travelled much. He should go to Jos, go to Makurdi, go to Nasarawa state and see the volume of southerners there. Nyanya and Mararaba alone, full of southerners numbering several hundreds of thousands puts his claims on shaky ground. Is Sabon Gari in Kano a joke to him? |

Dogalmighty17:Publish the pupil manifest of ten random classrooms in Northern Nigeria. If you school there you will certainly remember the ethnic composition of your class |

The originator of this thread is a bad student of statistics. You can't just use an outlier state like Osun as a base for comparison of migrants. It doesn't work that way. Osun state can only be used in that sense for few inconsequential states not known for commerce, mining and trade. Some northern states don't fall into that category. For example, Kano, Plateau, Kaduna and Abuja don't fall into that category. Nasarawa and Niger states also are states that benefit from the Abuja spill over. These states don't fit into your Osun category of states for non-indigenes and low southern populations. You've never travelled to the North hence you can't gauge properly the likely populations of Southerners living there. Prior to the Sharia riots in the North and the subsequent violence that followed against Christians in the region, large numbers of Southerners settled in many smaller towns and even villages there. I'll estimate close to 8 million at the time (1999). However, from year 2000, the number started to drop. States like Borno, Yobe, Bauchi, Adamawa, Taraba and Gombe witnessed a large exodus of Southerners. A good number of them now settled in Abuja swelling it's population. Abuja in 1999 was less than 400,000 people. The same but to a lesser extent happened in the North West states which wasn't heavily affected by Boko Haram campaign. Kano and Kaduna still have a sizeable number of Southerners but new traveller's weren't going there anymore. For the North Central states, the Southerners population was not much affected even in Plateau despite the many violence that plagued it. As of today, the population of Southerners living in the entire North I'll say ranges between 5 to 6 million. |

Whatever the population of Southerners in the North and Northerners in the South, it is immaterial in the division of Nigeria. Every Southerner knows his origin and can easily relocate when the time comes. People should stop reasoning like frogs and start thinking like humans. Nigeria can't protect you, then have a vote of no confidence on Nigeria and part ways with her. Just simple common sense. |

Fejoku:I agree there are some very cosmopolitan cities but they are not many. States that have cosmopolitan cities will have a slightly higher percentage but I believe none will be up to five percent of total. If 4 states of 19 have five percent it still will not have much effect. If Osun does not have one percent Northerners, pray how will Katsina or Yobe have even 0.5 percent southerners? Take up my challenge and publish real stats |

| Re: There Are Less Than Three Million Southerners In The North. by Fejoku: 11:45pm On Apr 05 |
lawani:There is nothing like Yorubawa community in Northern Nigeria made up of Yorubas who no longer have family members in the SW today. Nothing like that. Yes, some Yorubas exist who have lost connection back to Yorubaland but they've been acculturated there. They're not a community in the sense of it. There are also Igbos in the same category but to a very low numbers in comparison. This is because most Igbos travel home with their kids to show them their place of origin but Yorubas don't do so that much. However, most Yorubas know their states of origin and town but will struggle to identify there grandfather's compound. The entire Yoruba population in the North INCLUDING Northern Yorubas of Kwara and Kogi is less than 6 million. Kwara... 3million Kogi.... 1.2 million The rest of the entire Northern Nigeria 1.5million. |

Fejoku:Yoruba have been living among Hausa since there was a thing called Hausa. There are Yoruba family compounds founded by Hausa not only in Ilorin but even in Lagos and there are Hausa family compounds founded by Yorubas in major Hausa cities. Let us not argue about Yoruba population in the North it is pointless |
