Summarily, the Central Bank of Nigeria took over Union Bank in early 2024 because a secret investigation found serious problems with how the bank was being run. According to the report, the old owners and directors did questionable things with the bank's money. For example, they took a $300 million loan from another bank (Afreximbank) and moved the debt onto Union Bank's books without being honest about it. They also allegedly used that loan money to buy shares in Union Bank itself—meaning the bank was basically being forced to pay back a loan that was used to buy its own ownership. Investigators say this broke normal banking rules and put the bank at risk of running out of money, especially in foreign currency like US dollars. None of these accusations have been proven in court yet, and no one has been convicted of a crime. But the Central Bank stepped in to prevent Union Bank from collapsing and possibly hurting Nigeria's entire banking system. Since the takeover, things have improved—the bank is recovering, gaining more customers, and paying back what it owes. The Central Bank has also confirmed that Union Bank remains under its control for now, despite a recent court ruling that it is reviewing. For regular customers, nothing changes: the bank is still open and safe to use. However, a few banks (including Union Bank) are still facing legal and regulatory issues, which the Central Bank says it is handling through proper channels. |

Emefiele's dirty hands was involved in this as he is believed to be the brains behind Titan Trust Bank. I wonder how many other banks were involved in such murky deals? |
