Covenant University student, Tunmise, Dies over lack of Oxygen at clinic

Covenant University is trending because Tunmise a 500-level Building Tech student died at the medical center, because they didn’t have Oxygen so they switched to prayers till he died. Oyedepo too joined.

Apparently, they were playing the Chancellor’s Cup, a match between Computer Engineering and Building Tech, Tunmise asked for an early sub as he was feeling weak and short of breath.

At half time, his situation got worse, they rushed him to the medical centre where the doctor on duty allegedly said Tunmise just needed air. But minutes later, said had stopped breathing.

Apparently, they didn’t use an oxygen or nebulizer. Because the ₦1.9M per session school housing over 11,000 students had nothing in their arsenal, except Jesus, so they switched to prayers.

According to multiple persons, Oyedepo arrived too and joined the prayers to revive him, it failed. It was about 3 hours later they informed Tunmise’s parents, while the school leaders were still contemplating proceeding with the football tournament.

Also, some are alleging that the school WiFi was turned off as a news control measure, and students are forbidden from purchasing data or browsing outside school’s ISP.

June 2025, a 200L engineering student Mordi Nwese Daniel was struck by lightning on the same football pitch, instead of taking him for treatment, they started praying for him, he died.

April 2017, a 500L Building Tech student hit his head in the pool, students managed to resuscitate him, rushed him to the school clinic, they didn’t have oxygen or defibrillator, they again opted for prayers, he died.

The school is yet to issue a statement on Tunmise’s death.

However, students speaking up are afraid they may be sanctioned or targeted.

This is sad, however I'm careful with stories like this. While I don't like these modern day pastorpreneurs, this may not be the full story.

CONVENANT can do better.

Little things like this should not be found wanting in a fees paying institution of that magnitude. Everything should not be about advertising your position a the number wareva university in Nigeria.

However, comments should focus less on the prayer being bandied in the write-up.

The hospital should've rejected the patient instead of resorting to prayers. It's so disappointing that Oyedepo even joined the prayers - I bet he wouldn't do the same if the patient was his son.

The federal ministry of health needs to up their field inspection game. But, the problem is that those field inspectors can be bribed.

Tinubu has no business being the president of this country. Nigeria needs a no-nonsense president that will discipline everyone and institutions.

RIP to Tunmise.

With the recent things happening in this covenant university ranging from Lecturers poor salary and this now . I think this is a den of criminality where parents are paying excessively amount of money while just little are being offered.

What are they using all these millions being paid there for?please can someone tell me? And the church that owns this school is one of the richest in the world. A typical case of the more you look the less you see.

1, We don't know the medical history of the students
2, We also don't know if the story told is the case

1. I am not a fan of Oyedepo, I even consider that he probably worships mammon more than jesus
2. I am also not ruling out negligence as well...but not every death is negligence

Well

1. If he stopped breathing, there is no way oxygen or nebulizer would have worked.
2. If he was asthmatic, the doctor won't have said, even if na incompetent doctor, that he just needs air, at least a shot of hydrocort is a good place to start.

I'm thinking he was brought in dead, pronounced dead, then the prayers started.

Again, na my opinion, and I am waiting for a full investigation

Mein gott, this case is simple. The lighting killed him. Simple. Even if they rushed him to hospital, he would have been pronounced dead.

FFS, who thought of including this case here? 1 bolt of lighting is 100million to 1billion volts. (If he survives, it would be miraculous). Yes, people surive lighting bolts, but this probably was a case of a lethal strike.

Nothing could be done here...move on

A student hit his head in the pool....that's a major traumatic head injury plus neck injury.

Yes, they got his heart beating again.

But he had a head injury, possible damage to his brainstem, so probably brought in brain dead.

THERE IS NOTHING THAT OXYGEN OR DEFIBRILLATOR WOULD HAVE (censored) DONE. (Apologies, but I am getting pissed. Really pissed).

At best the guy was probably brain dead. Im guessing the doctors knew that when he was brought in. And they knew that at best the guy would end up in an ICU, brain dead. not responsive, and even if he survived, he would be severely disabled for life. I'm not talking about using a wheelchair.

Plus defibirllators, sports fans, are not for bringing back patients to life, they are for restoring the heart to its regular rhythym. And if the rhythm is not shockable...there is nothing a defibillatior can do.

Also, on case no 3...someone on twitter said that green stuff was coming out of his ears and nose.

That's cerebrospinal fliud, which if it is coming out of the mouth and ears indicates severe head injury. At best, even if they got him to a Tertiary center, his chances were very low

Also, his breahting was not good.

That confirms that he probably was brain dead when brought in. Hence the prayers.

In case 2 and 3 and even 1 we keep on hearing that 'if the hospital had defibrillator he would have lived'. Well, the fact is, a defibrillator is not something that brings dead to life (thanks to the movies for making that a truism)..and a defibrillator won't work in a case like case no 3 where the student was brought in brain dead.

A higher fee is being paid on behalf of
federal uni students by govt. Do they even have facility talk less of oxygen.

How much is oxygen and nebulizer that CU authoritiies can't put in place considering this isn't the first time a student had to die for lack of oxygen and nebulizer?

There comes a time we need to tell ourselves the truth,
prayer is important, there is the need to do the right things like getting the clinic equipped not just bragging about how rich an organization is or the ranking of your institution always.

Now, that they put prayers ahead of oxygen and nebulizer, how do they feel that 3 students have died despite all their prayers?
they should be ashamed of themselves.

From not having oxygen to apparently they didn't.
The source lurped everything together just to create a sensational story and find who to hold responsible for the unfortunate death.
The school as usual,is a big scapegoat to hold and scandalize and as is typical of situations like this when SM conspiracies posts are the motto,the facts would be quite different from what actually happened when the real story is told because nothing in this story seems based on factual evidence,just hearsay,speculation and conspiracy theories.

The issue of a lack of oxygen at the clinic might be true or may not be true.

Considering the kind of magnificent church Oyedepo built in Ota, I often wonder why he's building another project. That project is a total waste of resources.

It's just the usual negligence on these parts...
