Covenant University Announces Death of Student, Denies Negligence

OFFICE OF THE VICE-CHANCELLOR
Prof. Timothy A. Anake

April 8, 2026

RE: THE UNTIMELY PASSING OF TOLUWASE JESUTUNMISE EMMANUEL

On Monday, April 6, 2026, the Covenant University community experienced the unfortunate loss of one of our precious students. Jesutunmise, a diligent and vibrant student, participated in a student’s football training session on campus.

He stepped out of the game to rest after he was said to have complained of leg pains and being tired. In a short while, his football mates observed that he was gasping for breath, and they responded swiftly by taking him to the Medical Centre’s emergency unit, which was directly opposite the playing field. However, he had stopped breathing by the time he arrived at the facility.

Though he was brought in dead, the doctors responded immediately by administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) with an automated external defibrillator (AED). However, all efforts to resuscitate Jesutunmise were unsuccessful. Subsequently, he was certified clinically dead due to prior undisclosed heart condition.

We wish to confirm that there was no form of negligence in the response of the medical personnel or a shortage of any required equipment for the treatment.

The management of the University, led by the Vice-Chancellor, was at the Medical Centre from the time of the unfortunate event until the parents arrived, and remained with the family until he was laid to rest.

The entire Covenant University community extends our deepest condolences to the family for this loss. This is also a loss for the University and the entire society, which was deprived of the special gift that Jesutunmise represents.

We thank the general public for your concern and support at this time. Please keep the family in your prayers as they navigate this difficult period.

Thank you
Professor Timothy A. Anake
Vice-Chancellor, Covenant University

This is a university of the very religious kind, and look at how they are brazenly lying about everything. Goes to show religion in this country na show that no one actually believes or tries to live by.

You think his parents are gullible?

Gullible parents dont put their children in private universities.

They paid because they believe in science.

You can take your children to chapel for healing.

I know you are trolling but for gullible ones here this is for you

Every parent's worst nightmare.

May we not receive a call that our child is dead. I gave you my child hale and hearty and you are now calling me to come and pick his corpse??

This is not enough. If what you published is true, please look for the person that wrote a misleading report and prosecute.

We need to make scape goats so others can learn.

Check Twitter, brotherly. Accounts there are consistent in the guy being brought in alive to the clinic and not able to breathe, and there being no oxygen to treat him. So they started praying for him till he kpai.
He's not even the only one to kpai like that in the last few years. And this being Nigeria, where consequences for bad behaviour are almost non-existent, this exact situation will happen again and you will show up here to ask me how I know the university adminstratin were lying.

It could have been because he played soccer that rigorously.

After a long break from that type of exercise, returning to it needs caution. He should not have played more than 5 minutes, for the first day of return.

As days go by, he could then be increasing it by additional 2-3 minutes, until his body has gotten used to faster heart-beating and panting again.

"Brazenly lying about everything?"
Why are you so heartless? Do you have anything evil against the church?

On the topic, writing now

Pain in the leg plus breathlessness may mean pulmonary embolism

Also the heart condition is a strong possibility. Remember Marc Vivien foe.

But when all is said and done, AUTOPSY and Investigation.

See I went to a university too...

And I can tell you for a fact and for free that narratives in such situation can change very quickly.

I have been in settings like this before. As a developing young man. Forget what you see on Twitter. Even people that weren't there would comment on twitter.

Except an official independent investigation is done don't be too hasty to conclude who is lying.

Yes the situation in Nigeria is bad but it shouldn't be an excuse to add up and put up with the terrible behavior and situation in the country. Ok?

There have been cases of footballers dying because of the same issue.

Sam Okwaraji, Marc Vivien foe both died from unknown heart conditions that were diagnosed on autopsy

Christian Eriksen and Fabrice muamba both survived

That is why many European clubs do a full cardiovascular examination and investigation including stress ECG and echo cardiogram before sealing any transfer deals.

Kanu had a similar heart condition that was diagnosed on time because in moving form Ajax to inter, inter did the same thorough examination
