THROWBACK: A Rare Photograph From The 1970s Captures A Young Atiku Abubakar by HisaacPlus(op): 9:10pm On Apr 11
A rare photograph from the 1970s captures a young Atiku Abubakar—long before the public offices and political prominence—enjoying a night out in a Lagos nightclub alongside his first wife, Titilayo, and a close family friend, Sola. It is a scene that reflects the vibrant social life of Lagos in that era: smoky dance floors, highlife rhythms, and the unmistakable sound of King Sunny Ade dominating the nightlife.

Decades later, during a 2015 interview, Atiku fondly recalled those youthful days: “I remember how we used to dance to King Sunny Ade’s music. You had to know the moves to be cool in Lagos back then.” The memory offers a glimpse into a more personal, carefree chapter of his life—one shaped by music, camaraderie, and the cultural pulse of the city.

His wife, Titilayo Abubakar (née Albert), was born into a Christian Yoruba family from Ilesa, Osun State. Raised in Lagos, she began her education at Lafiaji before moving to St. Mary’s in Iwo for her secondary studies, completing them in 1969. Two years later, in 1971, she married Atiku Abubakar, who at the time was a young, ambitious customs officer building his career and future.

After their marriage, Titilayo furthered her education at Kaduna Polytechnic, balancing academic aspirations with the responsibilities of a growing family.

Together, the photo and the memories behind it offer a captivating snapshot of youthful beginnings—of love, friendship, ambition, and the rhythm of Lagos in the 1970s.

This Atiku sha. Wetin d man even forget for asorock? Has he not looted enough? Anybody that is so desperate like this man always end up as a failure if he gets the opportunity to lead.

Late buhari may God rest his soul was desperate and he didn't achieve much

This Atiku is desperate and he won't achieve anything

Peter Obi the lamba master is very desperate and same as atiku, he won't achieve anything

Yaradua of blessed memory wasn't desperate and the man did great

GeJ wasn't desperate and he also tried

Tinubu on the hand didn't show any desperation but he made his plans to become president for almost 15yrs. I can't say he failed because he hasn't completed his 1st term!

This is the time when he just started his looting journey at the port.

The Lamba man later joined him during Abacha time where they did abracada on 25boxes of sultan snuggled into Nigeria.

The Lamba man use his share of the loot to purchase his first house in London.

Now think deeply, if these 2 desperate thieves get to Aso rock - God forbid bad things

Last last Atiku will still need to appeal to the Yoruba that's why you don't see his supporters yabbing about tribes. He knows he needs everybody.

One notable thing is whenever he wants to appeal his Yoruba audience, his Yoruba wife Titilayo is always in the mix.

It was Sunny Ade's instrumental that blew the mind of the foreigners. The live performance, God, you don't even need to understand what he's singing, just follow up with the background instruments and you are okay.

Youngblood by 5 seconds of summer, gosh apart from knowing the lyrics, I can play the background instruments with the singing

Leave him, perhaps he was born in the 2000s, he grew up to see satalite TV, GSM phone and social media platforms. He should go back home and ask his dad how life was in the 80s and 90s.. my late Dad retired in the Federal Civil Service, while my mum was a teacher (they were both graduates, my dad, an alumni of OAU, he graduated when the school was still called the University of Ife, while mum graduate from UNAD (EKSU), then it was called OSUA).
We didn't have life on a rose, we struggled through my early days, partly in Lagos and Abuja. Nigeria, for me has never been a good country. It becomes good, when one has access to steal from the Government or dupe other people.

The president that wld be able to break this jinx of electricity supply, wld forever be remembered.

Bro respect should also be given to Sade Adu. That's another legend. Her is not just the good music she sings, but how the background instrumentalists formed bandits and entertaining themselves. Sade will be entertaining you at the same time with the background instrument from the bandit instrumentalists.

I know what you're talking about and in that regard we won't close the convo. Many people don play fine music for Yorubaland make we no even go diaspora.

I love how you understand the importance of instruments in music. I'm a music person myself and it always begin with the instrumentation for me.

Bro, I have even moved past of instruments in music for relaxation, there are some frequency hertz that if you listen to, just choose the galaxy you want to visit by yourself.. grin cheesy

Good lyrics, good beat, good instruments are the basis of good relaxation when it comes to music. All we have lately in Nigeria are just noise makers

Respect to Asa as well. My Cameroonian friend was surprised when I gave him the Asa album when he was returning back to his country. We used to listen to it together and he was so much love it. I felt happy for given it out because then, the downloading wasn't really there, it's CD

May be he was too young when Gowon made statement that money is not our problem but how to spend it.
Nigerians were happy in the past till around early 80 before Buhari took over power.
Some Nigerians rejected schooling in US and UK that time. Our Naira was stronger than pounds. Naira was accepted in most of UK malls.
So dont says Nigeria ever happy.
Do u know what bring about festac 77. Too much money in Nigeria.
We pray we have leaders that would have interest of the country at heart not all these scavangers that grab anything available into their pocket
