Why should I be paying tax selfhuh?

I keep asking that question ⁉️ undecided

I pay for my own medical healthcare
I pay for my own water
I pay for my own security ( compound and street security)

I pay for my kids school fees

I pay for my own transportation fare.

I buy petrol the exact price, because of the removal of fuel subsidy

I even pay for electricity that I dont see

I pay for outrageous house rents..

So where is the government coming in?? undecided

E be like thunda won fire this man embarassed
People who go to federal universities do they pay as much as State univerisites or private universities? Where do you think the balance comes from?
The money you pay when you visit a government hospital, do you think it truly reflects the value of the services rendered?
The roads you drive on, you paid for this from your pocket, too?
The police you will report to when your neighbour gives you a blow on your left eye, you put them on salary from your pocket?

We live in an imperfect country, but for you to gaslight yourself that you don't need to pay tax is ridiculous. Taxes are the foundation of every modern economy. The day your favourite politician enters office, he or she too will need your tax revenue to do basic things for you.

If no other reason, Nigerians need to vote Tinubu out because of this anti-people tax he brought.

What Nigerians don't even know is that Tinubu did not remove only petrol subsidy

Tinubu removed all the subsidies that kept Nigerian economy stable.

He removed subsidy on electricity tariff and increased tariff in what they tagged band a, b, c, d, e, etc even as electricity supply worsened.

Tinubu removed subsidy on tertiary education in Nigeria and school fees was increased abnormally and he then cunningly introduced his so called student loan to cover it up.

Tinubu increased land use charge especially in Lagos. This was part of the reason for increase in house rents because landlords now pay more money to Lagos state government for building house in Lagos than before so they need to realize the money from tenants.

Tinubu introduced indirect taxes via bank extra charges on transfers Nigerians do hourly on their accounts. Go and check how many alerts you receive when you transfer ordinary 1000 naira to another account.

He increased import duty on vehicles even when Nigeria does not manufacture vehicles. Same on building materials which made building house in Nigeria now for the billionaires only.

Nigerians were still struggling to survive all these wicked levies and taxes he went and brought his new tax law to tax poverty in Nigeria comparing us with UK and France, etc when over 65% of Nigerians are living in abject poverty and being supported by the few financial buoyant family members and relatives Tinubu decided to overtax to raise more money for his government to steal.

Honestly I feel scared imagining Tinubu winning a second term, Nigerians will see hell fire live!

The kind of taxation and poverty that will befall Nigeria will shock the world
whatever they do, I will rather vote for Air than vote for a man who wrecked my purchasing power. Tinubu practically made me poorer while politicians continue to live off our common wealth. No way, if they are serious with sacfrice, it should start with them. We provide fund for politicians medical bill, transportation, wellfare, vacation, security, including that of their families, in return, we dont get any of these things from the country and u want me to pay up to 25 percent of my income as tax, not minding VAT tax, and other crazy taxes within banks, importation, etc. Every govt agency takes money from u, driver linces is not free, pasport is not free, like nothing is free, car papers, u must pay. Like, govt suck us dry and still came after my personal income which I sourced from outside Nigeria? They are mad. They better shoot me dead. Income I earned from other countries that found me worthy to earn a living, u want 25 percent of it, while I provided everything I needed to earn that income. Lie lie, kill me o. Just kill me

Are you a government worker??

Or do you work with firs?

If yes, then I can engage you in these discussions, but if no, I better will remain silent grin grin

I would make reference to the covid 19. Citizens in uk were paid by their government some relief amount, can't really remember, but will get it from my friend, who at that time was in uk for studies.

But here in Nigeria, nothing like that happened. angry

So my question, why do we pay taxhuh

Like I said, I will only engage you, if you are a government worker or work with firs

I have just answered you as to why you pay tax. You pay tax because you use the roads. Because the police are paid a salary to attend to you. Because there are federal universities that you can go to, which are among the cheapest anywhere in the world becasue the government subsidises them heavily.

You left all these to talk about COVID payments as though COVID payments--even in the UK--are the anticipated primary purpose of taxes.

If you opt to remain silent, that is not any concern of mine. In fact, it would be better to do that than to spread ignorant views.

you will address tire
Taxing Nigerians when the government has not done anything significant for the masses
If you want to tax
Tax politicians ,they earn more than their counterparts in the USA and ensure that it reflects in the very lives of Nigerians until then shelve it
This may actually lead to protests from the masses

Our attention has been drawn to misleading media reports claiming that the Honourable Minister of State for Finance, Mr. Taiwo Oyedele has "finally admitted errors in the new tax laws." These publications misrepresent the Minister's statements, falsely alleging that he urged Nigerians to await the outcome of a "legislative probe", a process that has long been concluded and the gazetted copies certified by the National Assembly published since early January 2026.

This twisted narrative is unhelpful as it risks distorting public understanding and misleading the very people the reforms were designed to benefit.

The Minister, during a recent fireside chat at the NBA SLP conference in Lagos, highlighted the early positive impact of the new tax laws, including thousands of informal businesses now seeking CAC registration daily while the number of individuals registered for tax purposes nationwide has increased from barely 10 million before the reform to over 100 million.

These impressive results stem from the robust design and progressive nature of the new laws, which include:

- Exemption of small companies from tax.

- Increased exemption thresholds for low-income earners.

- Tax exemptions on basic consumption items like food, education, healthcare, transportation, and rent.

- Introduction of the Tax Ombud to protect taxpayer right.

The Minister contrasted the transformative changes in the new laws with the regressive provisions in the old laws. He however emphasised that no law is perfect. Therefore, ongoing stakeholder engagement is essential to identify and address any errors or gaps for appropriate legislative updates through Finance Bills as part of a continuous improvement process.

We urge members of the public to disregard sensational headlines and twisted narratives and rely exclusively on official sources and credible media organisations for accurate information regarding the tax reform and other government policies.

God bless Nigeria!

When I saw that FAKE news, I immediately knew it was fake and deliberate intended to tarnish the image of Taiwo Oyedele and the Nigerian Government. It's time to draw the line on disinformation because the so-called governments and regulatory agencies have been too irresponsible and lenient with these FAKE news propagators!

Until the Nigerian Federal Government and governments at all levels in Nigeria begin to punish heavily the FAKE news propagators in the courts of law, these sorts of disinformation that are intended to damage the image of the government would continue on social media (and even radio stations such as Nigeriainfo FM 99.3 Lagos (which I listen to online) where some of the highly insidious and IRRESPONSIBLE male and female OAPs handling different program time belts deliberately incite gullible listeners and push out misleading information WITHOUT apologizing to discerning listeners.

The DSS and other intelligence agencies MUST wake up as relentless FAKE news is seen in the Nigerian online space is capable of bringing down any government.

That boy you were correcting on this page doesn't even realize that those COVID payments made by the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom were NOT free at all. They will have to be paid back by the citizens in form of taxes to the government!

The level of illiteracy on this website and some other online platforms is indeed a mirror image of the Nigerian society in which that boy lives in... A society filled with semi-literates, sensationalism and outright disinformation.

At least they are seeing what their taxes are being used for unlike here that it's being looted. For instance, 135billion naira was taken from the Consolidated Revenue Fund charges for post election legal matters. In year 2022, about 2 billion was used for the same purpose while in 2023, about 3 billion was used. You can fact check me. From 3 billion in 2023 to 135billion in 2026, isn't this difference too much?
