Boko Haram Ambush Kills Nigerian Army Colonel, Several Other Soldiers In Borno

A serving Nigerian Army Colonel, identified as Colonel I.A. Muhammad, has been killed in an ambush by Boko Haram insurgents following a coordinated overnight attack on a military formation in Monguno, Borno State.

Soldiers currently deployed in the North-East battlefield disclosed the incident to SaharaReporters on Monday morning, recounting how the senior officer was killed while leading a reinforcement mission to repel terrorists.

According to the sources, the insurgents launched an attack on Sunday night, targeting a Forward Operating Base (FOB) under the 242 Battalion in Mungunu, which falls under Sector 3 of the military’s counter-insurgency operations.

One of our senior commanders, Colonel I.A. Muhammad, was killed last night when Boko Haram attacked Monguno. They also killed some soldiers during the attack,” a soldier on the front lines told SaharaReporters.

Monguno is a strategic military hub hosting a large camp with multiple sub-units, including battalions led by Colonels and Lieutenant Colonels, under the supervision of a sector commander, a General Officer Commanding.

Sources explained that during the attack, insurgents focused their assault on a smaller but critical military position, the FOB, prompting an urgent call for reinforcement.

The Colonel got information that troops at the FOB were under heavy attack. As a committed commander, he mobilised to lead reinforcement to the location,” another source said.

However, tragedy struck before he could reach the embattled troops.

SaharaReporters gathered that while advancing towards the frontline, the Colonel’s convoy drove into a deadly ambush laid by the insurgents, who had planted a remotely detonated explosive device along the route.

He did not die inside the camp. He was on his way to support his men when Boko Haram fighters ambushed them with a controlled landmine. It was not the type you step on; it was detonated remotely at the exact moment his vehicle approached,” the source added.

The explosion reportedly killed the Colonel instantly, alongside a yet-to-be-confirmed number of soldiers accompanying him.

The attack highlights the increasing use of sophisticated improvised explosive devices (IEDs) by Boko Haram fighters, raising fresh concerns about the safety of military personnel operating in the region.

This comes a few days after terrorists attacked a military base in Benisheikh, Borno State, killing an unspecified number of soldiers, including a Brig. Gen., Oseni Braimah. The attack happened on April 9, 2026.

On March 9, 2026, Lieutenant Colonel Umar Farouq and some other soldiers were killed when insurgents overran a military base in the Kukawa LGA of Borno State.

On March 6, 2026, during multiple military attacks in the state, terrorists killed Lieutenant Colonel, S.I. Iliyasu, the commanding officer of the 222 Battalion.

On March 1, 2026, terrorists also attacked a military formation in Mayenti, Bama LGA, killing Umar Ibrahim Mairiga, the commanding officer, and several other soldiers.

Nation mourns as brave Commanding Officer, six soldiers fall after repelling attack in Monguno

By: Zagazola Makama

Grief and solemn reflection have trailed the tragic loss of a Commanding Officer and six gallant soldiers of Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), whose lives were cut short shortly after successfully repelling a terrorist attack in Monguno, Borno.

In the late hours of April 12, troops of Sector 3, Joint Task Force (North East), came under an isolated infiltration attempt at Charlie 13 location. With courage and determination, the soldiers engaged the attackers in a fierce gun battle, eventually forcing them to flee and securing the area.

But even in victory, tragedy struck. Driven by an unyielding sense of duty and deep concern for his men, the Commanding Officer chose to move forward, towards the very danger others would avoid, to personally assess the situation on ground. It was a decision that reflected the very essence of true leadership: to lead from the front, to share in the risks, and to stand shoulder to shoulder with his troops.

In that moment of selfless courage, his vehicle encountered an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), killing him and six of his men. Their loss is not just a statistic, it is a profound human tragedy.

They were fathers, brothers, sons, and comrades. They were men who wore the nation’s uniform with pride, who stood in the face of danger so others could sleep in peace. They did not retreat when confronted with terror; instead, they stood firm, defended their ground, and ultimately gave everything.

The silence they leave behind echoes loudly across the ranks.

Operation HADIN KAI, in a statement by its Media Information Officer, Lt.-Col. Sani Uba, expressed deep sorrow, describing the fallen officer as a symbol of courage, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to duty. Their ultimate sacrifice, the statement noted, will forever remain etched in the memory of the Armed Forces and the nation they served with honour.

As the country mourns these heroes, their bravery lives on not only in the victory they secured that night, but in the enduring reminder that freedom and security are often paid for with the highest price.

Nigerian Army Confirms Drone-Assisted Boko Haram Ambush That Killed Colonel, Six Soldiers In Borno

The Nigerian Army has officially confirmed an earlier report by SaharaReporters detailing a deadly terrorists ambush in Borno State in which armed drones were deployed by insurgents, leading to the killing of senior military personnel, including Colonel I.A. Mohammed.

In a statement released on Monday and signed by the Media Information Officer, Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI, Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, the Army disclosed that troops came under a coordinated attack late on April 12, 2026.

According to the statement, “Troops of Sector 3, Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) came under an isolated Tango terrorist attack on Charlie 13 location in Monguno, in the late hours of 12 April 2026.”

The statement read, “Following intense fire exchanges, the terrorists were put to flight, with troops maintaining control of the location.

Regrettably, the Commanding Officer, while courageously proceeding to the troops’ location to personally assess the situation, encountered an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) which severely affected his vehicle, leading to his death alongside six other gallant personnel."

The military described the late colonel as a fearless and dedicated leader who exemplified the highest ideals of military service.

The north is gradually reducing her top officers.
we can see that the cat they led into Nigeria for their own good has grown into a lion and feeding on her offspring.

The south is aware that this union may not stay beyond 20 years as we can not continue dragging our feet like this.

Once the Forward Operating Base was known to be under attack, a presumption ought to have been made that all routes by which army reinforcements could arrive would be seeded with IED traps by the terrorists to blow up the first vehicle that drove over them.

Aerial bombardment by drones or manned aircraft was the most viable option that ought to have been implemented with urgency in this instance. A military convoy inbound on any road to the scene of the attack was all but certain to fall into an ambush or IED trap.

Week in, week out, Nigeria keeps wasting people's loved ones. Choosing to join the military shouldn't be a death sentence. Tinubu should quit if this job is too hard for him.

If tinubu can use the same strategy he used to dismantle political parties on insurgency and terrorism, there would have been headway, but he's using all his strategy negatively

With these constant killings, does the Nigerian Army believe that Boko Haram is acting out a movie?
Why can't they take the battle to them and crush them rather than take them as prodigal children?

Jesus!

What is the meaning of this?

These are brave men safeguarding the nation. Even if you hate the government of the day, you should know when and where to draw the line.

Gosh!

This is what I was saying here. You people rejoice when our military suffer casualties. What did these men do to you to deserve this kind of comment? Shey na them you pay your tax to abi na them be the president or your governor?

EponObi:
They praise Trump and Netanyahu when they bomb Gaza, Lebanon and Iran but cry wolf when the Nigerian Military launch a covert airstrike against terrorists enclaves.

They see genocides happening in real time in far away Middle East but look sideways, "they are terrorists", they will claim.

They see terrorists being destroyed in their own country, but cry and wail, with the leader of the headless mob, "they are human being", they claim.

ENKR, walahi!

When these terrorists kill our soldiers and generals, you rejoice and use it as an opportunity to drag Tinubu. When our military return the energy, instead of praising them, you become sorrowful and cry foul!

And una wan rule this country? You can't lead what you hate. It's impossible.
