Buhari with subsidy, borrowed N87trn, but Tinubu without subsidy, borrowed N151trn in 3 years—Melaye Dino Melaye, a former senator and chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, has criticised Nigeria’s current economic trajectory, comparing borrowing levels under former President Muhammadu Buhari and incumbent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Speaking in a video shared ahead of the 2027 general elections, Melaye argued that Nigeria’s debt has risen sharply within a short period under the present administration. His remarks come as opposition figures, including Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar, are reportedly working towards forming a coalition to challenge the ruling party. Melaye questioned the impact of key economic reforms, particularly the removal of fuel subsidy, which was expected to ease fiscal pressure and reduce borrowing. According to him, this expectation has not been reflected in the country’s financial records. He claimed that during Buhari’s administration, Nigeria accumulated about N87 trillion in debt while the subsidy regime remained in place. In contrast, he alleged that under Tinubu’s leadership, the country has recorded approximately N151 trillion in borrowing within three years, despite the removal of subsidy. Using the comparison, Melaye raised concerns about the government’s fiscal policies, suggesting that the nation’s debt burden has worsened rather than improved. His comments add to growing public discourse on economic management, government spending, and the long-term implications of rising debt. The development comes amid increasing political tension as the 2027 elections approach, with opposition groups intensifying efforts to present a united front. Meanwhile, debates continue among stakeholders, with supporters and critics offering differing perspectives on the effectiveness of current economic reforms https://news-af.feednews.com/news/detail/d4d9c0d73c9ae7d12bb2fb803d6e692d?client=news |

Tinubu would have used the model Buhari used in funding his road projects. Simply get a loan funded project from china and executed by CCECC📌💯. That coastal road will suffer setbacks if Emilokan is booted out. It's kickbacks that will finish emilokan 🤷🏿. |
