For 6th in the premier league to get UCL Villa need to finish 5th. The extra UCL slot is for the hishest ranked EPL team that didnt qualify for it. But if Villa finishes 4th or above and wins the Europa. Another Association will be upgraded into the Play off spots.

So the Europa winner slot belongs to Villa.

Now compare that to Maresca at Chelsea under BlueCo. There has been (i) constant squad turnover,(ii) a recruitment strategy focused on young and developing players, (iii) the overhaul of experienced senior players, (v) and changing club’s traditional identity from somethinh we have known for. That is not a stable environment for any coach to consistently thrive in, it reflects structural instability.

Saying “Arteta would come and win trophies” under Roman Abramovich, with a clear, results-driven structure, may be YES.

BUT under BlueCo, it is a completely different scenario , (i) frequent changes of players, (ii) recruitment for profits, (iii) sharing of minutes to every newly recruited players, even if it will unbalanced the rhythm of the games, the answer is NO
all of these nonsense was what Maresca is working with.

Put Arteta in the same conditions and there is no guarantee he would produce the result
So the issue is not simply Maresca. The bigger variable is the system above him.

BTW, I’m not hailing Maresca ooo, but I do think he would perform better if he was given full free hand to operate without constant interference by Oga at the top.

Popizaino wanted Pochetino when he already proved to be serial bottler(loser) everywhere he went including losing a league title at PSG. I remember all the warnings until his friend was appointed.
