I understand that it's criminal to own a firearm as a civilian in Nigeria, but then, the police should also be ashamed of themselves, their inability to do their job of securing lives and property is now pushing Nigerians to seek self protection... Bandits, kidnappers, terrorists are almost everywhere in 9ja now, they traffic arms as they wish, but 9ja police no dey see them on top all the hundreds of checkpoints everywhere, they have not even had the moral to sue the Federal govt for releasing murderers and terrorists to go scot free... Radarada...

Ps- if Nigerian govt are serious about security, firearms ownership should be legalized

It is NOT illegal to own ANY firearm, since shotguns and rifles are owned legally by thousands of Nigerians including myself. Typically licenses are renewed for 5 years at a time in Nigeria.

It is only PISTOLS and military weapons that are illegal to own for civilians in Nigeria, even though criminals carry ALL types of guns while risking jail or death in the process.

If he isn't allowed to have a firearm why do fukani herdsmen treat it like a toy and they all turn a blind eye.

If the guy has only used the gun for protection, then they should leave him be. My greatest fear is dying like a coward.
I'd get a gun if I could, preferably an automatic one. For i'm not gonna sit around and wait for some bloody terrorists to kidnap me and dangle my life right before my eyes while making me beg for it. God forbid I die like a coward. Abeg.

The government don't need to charge him to court. Handle him as a repentant gun owner and cultist and reintegrate him into the society, he was just trying to protect himself since bright edafe and his colleagues could not protect the state from bandits and unknown gunmen, at least we don know this one

This man comes across as a law-abiding citizen who armed himself with an illegal pistol NOT to commit crimes, but to protect himself from criminals who carry firearms and can only be deterred by an armed citizen who is willing to stand his ground and reject the role of a submissive victim.

The cardinal mistake made by the man caught with a pistol, was his decision to arm himself with an illegal handgun, rather than going through the proper channels to obtain a licensed shotgun or rifle. Outside of serving and retired military or police officers, NO Nigerian is allowed to own a concealable gun, be that a pistol or a shortened shotgun. For home defense, a standard shotgun is far more effective than a pistol, in trained hands.

Hopefully the judge slated to try this case will temper justice with mercy.

And what else do you expect him to have said, that he acquired the gun to kill his rivals?

Good he was caught
But on a serious note, he has a point.
He said he acquired it for protection against kidnappers and unknown gun men[/quote

If caught up in the cross fire of bandits , can that shotgun be enough to protect him ? Experts over to you. I don’t know if that gun would have the capacity to shoot more than 3 rounds with the way I’m seeing it.

Thank you for your opinion, sir. It might interest you to know that I have fired thousands of rounds from a variety of guns both at the shooting range, and while hunting everything from fast flying partridge erupting from the undergrowth, to big game in full gallop.

Over many years, therefore, I honed a level of marksmanship prowess, both as a rifleman, and as a shotgunner hunting fast moving targets, that many a police officer would envy.

Returning to the topic at hand, I again state that a shotgun in the right hands is an absolutely DEVASTATING home defense weapon that is vastly superior to a pistol in any home defense scenario one could envision.

Have a delightful day.

I too have extensive experience with firearms, owned all kinds of weapons, automatics, semi-auto, you name it. Shotguns were designed for bringing down large, heavy targets, and in that they excel. They are not meant for situations that involve rapid fire(which can be very helpful in self defense) and they are definitely not accurate at long ranges. If your idea of efficiency is blowing someones head clean off with one well placed shot then sure, I concede to your point, but, if efficient self defense involves stopping an aggressor with minimal effort and training then shotguns are out of the question.

It is good to hear that you also possess firearm expertise, Alusiizizi. My reason for extolling the suitability of shotguns over handguns or assault rifles for the specific circumstance of home defense, is because most home invasions occur swiftly, with intruders breaching a home using metal cutters to remove burglary bars, or battering ram impacts to shatter door locks.

A typical 12-guage shotgun cartridge of American-standard "Double-Ought" buckshot contains 9 to 12 weighty pellets that fan out in a conical blast envelope whose radius increases inversely with barrel length. Thus, a pump or semi-auto shotgun whose barrel has been deliberately cut short to maximize the area of impact for close range combat, can be used to "sweep" rooms or hallways using multiple rapid sequence blasts that will pulverize intruders without any requirement for the defender to taker careful aim.

In comparison, a 9mm semi-auto handgun, even if equipped with a "red dot" laser sight, requires careful and precise aim in order to stop an intruder with the first shot, or with all follow-up shots taken in the heat of the moment when the outcome of a gunfight often depends on lightning reflexes compressed into a time-frame of split seconds.

A shotgunner wielding a pump action scattergun, on the other hand, can easily eliminate threats indoors or in the close quarters of a fenced yard, using a series of rapid shots placed in the general direction of the perceived danger. Those shotgun blasts do not require precise aim as do pistol or rifle shots, and can thus be administered with blinding speed and to devastating effect. Shotguns were very popular with US marines patrolling the claustrophobic jungles of Viet Nam, for this very reason.

From a safety standpoint, a shotgun fired within a house or compound is far less likely than a pistol to over-penetrate and send pellets into nearby residences, or into the street outside. The absolute least suitable and most hazardous weapon for home-defense is of course a rifle, because rifle rounds can blow through walls to kill unintended innocents impacted hundreds of yards from the scene of the action.
