Nigerian Couple Tear Marriage Certificate At Their Wedding (Video) by Breaker001(op): 7:17am On Apr 25
A viral social media video has sparked widespread reactions after a Nigerian couple publicly tore their marriage certificate during their wedding ceremony.

The unusual act, carried out shortly after the certificate was issued, has stirred debate across online platforms, with many questioning its meaning and implications.

Why the Couple Tore the Certificate
The act reportedly took place at the wedding venue, moments after the official documentation was handed over to them.

According to the source of the video, the couple’s action was symbolic. It was said to represent their belief that divorce would never be an option in their union.

Guests at the ceremony were heard cheering loudly as both partners tore the documents, believed to be two copies of the certificate.

Despite the celebratory mood at the event, the gesture has continued to divide opinions online.

Mixed Public Reactions

Many social media users have criticised the act, describing it as unnecessary and lacking practical value.

One user, Iamnotarealman, wrote: “Women don’t let go of themselves like men. You can see she’s not in line with the decision, it shows on her face. Na men dey mumu for these love journey. Think like a woman.”

Another user, ManNelo, added: “Tearing your marriage certificate to ‘stop divorce’ is like tearing your light bill to stop NEPA from taking power. It’s a meaningless gesture that changes nothing about the reality.”

AfcxOfficial raised concerns about the importance of the document, stating: “But marriage certificate is more than keeping for divorced, what if they want to travel out of country as a couple or is needed to prove a point, anyways this don’t sound alright to me. Wish them best.”

FETWAB also criticised the move, saying: “People go just dey mumu up and down. Is the certificate only meant for divorce purposes. I’ll blame the mumu hubby the more, if the wife wants to act stupid it’s job to guide her.”

Wait, is this legal - well, it's not a Government issued-marriage certificate. So they can do with their business center printed certificate as they deem fit.

Nigerians and over-dramatization.
Some matured moo-mos go soon adopt this werehmatics. Una no dey creative enough to find something more creative to express "honeymoon promise of together forever".

As una tear certificate, hope una go tear bad attitude, tear unrealistic expectations, tear I'm not in the mood, tear you can't see my phone, etc.

This is a publicity stunt. Even the church or court that issued the certificate will not allow the certificate to be torn in this manner.

But let's act like the torn paper is the actual certificate. Tearing a legal document is childish. Who told them that the spirit that binds or separates a couple depends on the certificate? Tearing the certificate does not mean tearing bad characters that can end a marriage.

Can they tear their school certificates to show that those certificates are not what makes their brain function?

Why did they even do the wedding since they do not believe in the certificate? Neglecting the certificate means neglecting the wedding itself. It is like contesting for a political position and tearing the constitution of the country after being elected into that position.

They will get another copy from the church or fodge another one when they want to make any application that requires the certificate.

What if one half of the couple need to process traveling documents for the other, what evidence do they provide that they're legally married? undecided

Maybe the certificate is not the court issued one sha

The certificate is more for the woman than for the man. She will always need to prove that she changed her name. It was more of her property than his.

I have not seen my own marriage certificate since I got married 29 years ago!!!

Marriage Certificate is normally the woman's property, so she is the one to lose.

Though she can always get a replacement if need be. The document is signed in triplicate.

Mumu raised to power 4, they will learn the hard way.

The wife requires that certificate to do change of her surname to his name.

They need that certificate if they want to travel abroad.

Who says you can't divorce if you lost your certificate? The record remains in the govt archive, the court will demand for it and still divorce you.

Marriage is the only institution where there are no graduates...

So they have the right to tear their certificates, because of no graduation 😅

But seriously, husband and wife learn everyday about each other.

For the union to last is the reason they tore their certificates.

Which means, no matter what happens in the marriage no court of law can entertain their divorce whatsoever under any law.

Though this action here can be exploited by a wicked partner or both and results in dangerous ending. Like suffering in silence!

Also, when in-laws wahala suddenly rise up
