How Nigerian Car Dealers Really Price Your Car (2026)

My younger brother called me in June 2022.

He was excited. You know that voice, the one a man gets when he’s finally "arrived." He had just dropped ₦16.8m on a 2016 Toyota Camry.

"Clean title, Benz. Family friend dealer. Just landed last week," he told me.

I was happy for him. Truly. But I’ve been in this game long enough to know that "family friend" is often just another word for "someone who knows exactly how much you’re willing to overpay."

I asked for the VIN.

I went into the Copart database and plugged it in. The truth came out in 3 seconds.

The car was sold 9 weeks earlier. Winning bid? $4,350.

I pulled out my calculator. I factored in the shipping, the clearing at Tincan, the minor repairs, and the agent fees. The dealer’s total landed cost was ₦11.2m.

My brother paid ₦16.8m.

He lost ₦5.6m to a "family friend."

When I told him, the silence on the phone was heavy. Then he asked me something that changed how I look at this business:

"Why didn’t you teach me this before I paid?"

That’s why I’m writing this. Because in Nigeria, there is a level of life you simply cannot experience if you keep throwing ₦6m into other men's pockets for no reason.

Think about what ₦6m does for a man.
It’s not just "money." It’s the things that make life beautiful.

It’s 10 years of keeping a generator running so your woman doesn't stay in the heat. It’s the Sunday lunches after service that you don't have to check your bank app for. It’s the "basic convenience" of taking a Bolt at 2 AM without flinching at the price.

Dealers make money when you stay blind. They tell you "Customs increased duty" or "Dollar is high."

Yes, the dollar is high. But it’s high for them too.

The difference is they know the "Backdoor." They know how to bid on Copart without a license. They know the clearing agents who don't add ₦1.5M "padding" to every quote.

If you have ₦18m right now to buy a 2016 Honda Accord, you have two choices:

Hand it to a dealer. He takes ₦6M, buys his own wife a car, and gives you the keys to yours.

Use the system. You pay ₦12.5M. You keep ₦5.5M.
That ₦5.5M is your freedom. It’s your stability. It’s the "grace" that allows you to provide that basic convenience I always talk about.

I’ve imported 8 cars since 2021. I haven’t paid a dealer markup in years. Total saved? ₦41.6m.

If you want to learn how I do it - or if you want to learn how to do this for others and charge 500k a deal because they don't want to learn - get the DIY Import Bible.

Don't be like my brother. Don't wait until after you've paid the "family friend tax" to ask why no one taught you better.

Stop lying here. No dealer can make over 5m on a 2016 camry car.

Trustme2:

Lmao, that’s what they want you to believe.

In June 2022, when this story happened:

Parallel market dollar was around ₦580–₦610.

A clean 2016 Toyota Camry in Lagos was selling between ₦15m – ₦19m+ depending on condition, mileage, and how well the dealer marketed it (plenty of listings from that period confirm this).

The numbers in my story are:

Copart winning bid: $4,350

Add buyer fees ($700–$800 for that bid range)

Shipping to Lagos ($1,800–$2,500)

Clearing + duties (very high in 2022) + minor repairs + agent margin

Realistic landed cost: around ₦11–12.5m was very possible.

Selling at ₦16.8m = ₦4.5m – ₦5.8m gross profit before the dealer’s other overhead.

Is ₦5m+ profit possible on one 2016 Camry? Yes.

Many dealers were (and still are) making 30–50%+ margins on popular cars like Camry, especially when the buyer doesn’t know the real cost.

This is common knowledge in the import community.

Some make even more on “family friend” or “fresh arrival” premium pricing.

I’m not saying every dealer makes ₦5m+ on every Camry. But pretending it’s impossible in 2022 market conditions is what’s actually misleading.

Go and verify yourself (use Google, Jiji archives, Nairaland threads from 2022, or ask your AI):

1. What was the black market dollar rate in June 2022?

2. What were 2016 Camry selling for in Lagos at that time?

3. What was a typical landed cost for a $4k–$5k Copart Camry in 2022?

If you have better actual figures from that period, drop them here. I’m happy to correct the story if the numbers were off.

This post isn’t about attacking dealers. It’s about showing Nigerians they have options instead of paying “family friend tax.”

Many people have lost millions exactly like my brother did.

If the profit margin claim shocks you, it means you haven’t been following the real numbers in this business.

Your turn, go and bring receipts.
