*Abia-Born Scholar, Victor Odoemelam, Rises to Professor at FUTO*

The Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) has elevated Dr. Victor Udodirim Odoemelam to the rank of Professor, following a formal approval by the institution’s Governing Council. The announcement, which circulated within academic circles this week, marks a major career milestone for the animal scientist whose research into plant-based livestock solutions has drawn international attention.

A native of Umuezewuzie Ikpabo Nneato in Umunneochi Local Government Area of Abia State, the newly minted Professor brings over two decades of academic rigor to FUTO’s Department of Animal Science and Technology. Prior to his elevation, Prof. Odoemelam served as a Senior Lecturer and had once held the position of Secretary, and currently the Chairman of the Board of Council Chapel of Revelation at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU).

‎Born in Ogoja, Cross River State, Prof. Odoemelam’s educational path reflects a truly Nigerian tapestry. He began his early schooling at Prisons Model Primary School, Gboko, Benue State, before proceeding to St. John’s Boys Day and Gboko High School for his junior secondary education. He completed his senior secondary schooling at Oboro Secondary School, Ikwuano, Abia State.

‎He gained admission into MOUAU, where he obtained a B. Agric. in Animal Science. After his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) stint in Ile-Ife, Osun State, he returned to his alma mater for postgraduate studies, earning an M.Sc. and a Ph.D. in Animal Production and Livestock Management.

‎Throughout his ascent, Prof. Odoemelam has attracted significant funding and scholarly recognition. As an undergraduate, he was a beneficiary of the Federal Government of Nigeria Undergraduate Scholarship. He later clinched the Innovators of Tomorrow (IOT) STEP-B Research Grant a World Bank-assisted project that buoyed his postgraduate research.

‎In 2014, he was selected by Israel’s Agency for International Development Cooperation (MASHAV) for specialized training in Intensive Dairy Cattle Production. Two years later, he received a VLIR-UOS scholarship from the Belgian Development Cooperation and the Flemish Interuniversity Council for training in Dairy Nutrition. In 2020, he was a visiting scholar in the Department of Animal Science at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.

‎At the core of the new Professor’s scholarly output is the use of phytogenic feed additives plant-based derivatives such as herbs and spices in livestock feed. His work explores these natural compounds as potential alternatives to antibiotics, their modulation of digestive enzymes, and their capacity to reduce methane production in ruminants. He has also supervised a robust number of undergraduate and postgraduate research projects. He has over 70 scholarly publications in reputable peer reviewed journals and conference proceedings.

‎Prof. Odoemelam is married to his heartthrob, and the union is blessed with two children Faith and Chikauchem.

‎Academic and religious leaders from Abia, Benue, and Imo states have since begun sending congratulatory messages, describing his elevation as “well-deserved” and a testament to perseverance and intellectual excellence.

Congratulations Prof! Well done Sir.

But then I read the write up but didn't see the connection to your work in FUTO.

He did his professional degree in FUTO, and passed.

So he's advanced from Msc to Phd to Prof.
Same way you can study for these degrees from awarding academic institutions.

Congratulations Prof.
Beyond the rank of Professor, I think people should also note the value of the research behind it.
Improving livestock health and feed efficiency can affect food quality, farm output, costs, and sustainability.
Even small improvements in sectors like this can have large real-world effects in food economics, environmental health and livestock agriculture.

Titles are visible. Contributions are sometimes hidden. Respect to both.

Thanks for the clarification.
I appreciate his rich CV.

I only asked for clarity cos the write up said he did 1st degree, Masters and PhD at Michael Okpara Umuahia and stated all the places he worked and also said he brought 20 years professional experience to FUTO and was also awarded professorship by FUTO. This implies he currently lectures in FUTO.

I only wanted the writer to show the link from Michael Okpara to FUTO. It is missing in the write up.

The focus should have been on the current work in FUTO that earned him the award.

Thanks again

That's actually worth considering.

...the newly minted Professor brings over two decades of academic rigor to FUTO’s Department of Animal Science and Technology

This sentence holds an implication.
