The "Made in Türkiye" President: Diplomacy, Optics, and the Ankara Stumble
In the world of the Rwanda Diary, we know that power is often a performance. This photo from January 2026 captures Bola alongside President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan during a state visit to Türkiye. To some, it was a moment of regional partnership; to others, it was the "Ankara Stumble" that reignited the debate: Is Nigeria’s leadership truly "Made in Türkiye ," or is it just a product of clever staging?

Bola didn't go to Ankara just for a photo op. He went for Drone Diplomacy and Defense. Türkiye has become a critical arms supplier to Africa, and Nigeria, battling persistent insurgency needed access to Turkish military tech that comes with fewer "human rights strings" than Western alternatives.

The image above, and the viral video it was pulled from, became a lightning rod for the #Obidient movement and accountability advocates. When the leader of Africa's largest economy appears to be physically guided or loses his footing on a red carpet, the "Invisible Hand" of state intelligence has to work double-time to spin the narrative.

Is he a "Made in Türkiye" president because he is bringing home Turkish solutions to Nigerian problems? Or is the label a critique of a presidency that seems to require external "manufacturing" and constant support to stay upright?

As we discussed before, the "New Nigeria" vision relies on a different kind of strength—one that doesn't need to be propped up by a foreign host or guarded by a "front-man" banker. Whether Bola is afraid of the accountability that a refined and prudent leader like HE Peter Obi represents is a question for the ballot box. But as this photo shows, even the most carefully choreographed state visit cannot hide the reality of a leader under pressure.

You can buy drones from Türkiye and prime real estate in London, but you cannot buy the organic trust of a nation. The "Ankara Stumble" was a physical metaphor for a presidency that many feel is walking on shaky ground.

Time will tell if the "Made in Türkiye" deals can save a "Made in Nigeria" crisis.
