PHARMACIES IN NIGERIA ARE ABOUT TO CHANGE FOREVER : CPACPI FRAMEWORK OFFICIALLY ENDORSED!

Nigeria’s community pharmacies are no longer just medicine shops. Thanks to a new professional development framework endorsed by key stakeholders, pharmacists are set to become central players in primary healthcare.

The game-changing meeting, convened by the Association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria (ACPN) and the Community Pharmacists Assessment and Career Progression Institute (CPACPI) in Abuja, brought together government officials, regulators, WHO representatives, development partners, and private sector leaders.

Here’s why this matters:

Community pharmacists are often the first point of care for many Nigerians. Nearly 60% of patients visit a pharmacy before a hospital.

CPACPI introduces a 5-level career pathway:
From Community Pharmacist → Senior Community Pharmacist → Specialist → Senior Specialist → Consultant. Progression is now tied to measurable outcomes, mentorship, and structured appraisals.

The framework aims to transition pharmacies from simple medicine-dispensing outlets to full healthcare hubs, boosting access, service quality, and health data reporting across Nigeria.

32 individuals from public and private sectors were recognized as CPACPI Champions, leading the push for professional excellence and healthcare expansion.

Experts agree this is more than a framework – it’s a healthcare revolution. With proper legislative support and collaboration with the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria, community pharmacies could fill major gaps in primary healthcare, including maternal health, disease prevention, and data-driven healthcare planning.

Nigeria is witnessing the professionalization of its pharmacists like never before. Soon, your local pharmacy may not just dispense medicines – it could be your first stop for healthcare advice, preventive care, and trusted guidance.

The question now is – are pharmacists ready to step up, and will the system back them fully?

Good way to solve the medical issues in Nigeria However, hope this wouldn't be another failed "renewed hope" project. Nigeria is aleays good at making policies and promises to build castle in the air, but ,a prominent Master’s Degree holder in failing to bring them to fruition.

Pharmacists are Doctors too. There is Doctor of Pharmacy. You probably mean the Doctors with MBBS Bachelor degrees.

The only Proper Doctors are those with PhDs.

This is a pragmatic way for government to tap into the huge opportunity the Community Pharmacists offer them on a platter to improve public health.

Even healthcare proffessionals do not go to the hospital first. They visit the Community Pharmacists and seek his expert advice sometimes codedly though.

There is a Federal Minister who took advantage of this kind of opportunity currently available in the UK to become a Prescribing Consultant Pharmacist today yet UK has more orthodox healthcare professionals more than us.

We are just catching up with this huge reality that we are underutilizing scarce resources and everyone is paying for it.

Only the Pharmacists are the closest healthcare professionals to those who seek healthcare services everywhere in the world. If you tie the hands of Pharmscists in Nigeria out of envy, you are doing yourself and your own nation albeit you can not tie their hands. Many will even japa than to have their hands tied while those in Nigeria will not be affected if you want the status quo. They will still get paid but for doing less of what their colleagues in UK, US etc do.

This is the most pragmatic and smartest health policy to ever be proposed in Nigeria. Every patriotic Nigerian needs to support it .

God bless Nigeria.

This will lead to late presentation at the hospital..
Leading to more deaths from complications.. cause pharmacists I know will never refer you to a specialist. Cause they don’t want to feel less..

I think this is a mistake by the federal government

...Soon, your local pharmacy may not just dispense medicines – it could be your first stop for healthcare advice, preventive care, and trusted guidance.

Isn't that what they currently do, even according to the write-up?

I stand to be corrected, but I don't think there's anything in the proposal that's different from what pharmacies all over the country are currently doing.

On a side note, those in the medical field should help out with these. There are people that "learn work" in a pharmacy before opening their own, while hanging the certificate of a certified pharmacist as their consultant, and those girls that "learn nursing" in a hospital and in one year, they become nurses and now give injections and treat people operating on the same level as those that go to nursing school... Are both cases legal?

They are illegal! Those are quacks and are usually severely punished when caught. They're death traps and should be done away with if we want to have a strong healthcare system

How many Pharmacists do you know? You think pharmacists are like you medical doctors that claim monopoly of medical knowledge even with just your MBBS? Pharmacists know their scope and usually don't go beyond that. It is Nigerian medical doctors that are known for usurpation of professional responsibilities of others.
