I got a message today from the management in charge of the apartment I am living they increased the rent from #1,250,000 to #2,000,000 and my rent will expire this September . Please lawyers in the house what can I do ?

September will make it 2.6 months living there. The last person that parked in paid 2 million.

Plan and get a new apartment if its too much for your budget

My landlord increased my office rent last year by 50k. Just on Monday he brought another notice of increment this time around is 100k, that is 150k just in a period of a year. Have made up my mind to get another place by December. Some landlords are evil.

Well, look at your rental contract /agreement. If it is stated there that it can be increased without any prior notice, then you just have to follow through

Update : 2 years and 6 months ( If that’s what you mean by 2.6month) is enough to issue a notice of increment. I think 2 years is even the benchmark. So bros, nor vex, try pay or better still, find somewhere else cheaper or dialogue with him

find another place you all see somewhere cheap and better. Where are you located.

This means N2m is fair value. You can't pay lower than the new tenant.

To do?

Get a lawyer to check the allowed rates of rent increase according to your state laws. It should not be more than 20%, I think. That is your legal standpoint.

Will you eventually be forced to quit? Yes. But the courts may give you 2-3 years extra at your current rent + 20% before your landlord ejects you.

You're lucky you are not the only occupant of the building because the landlord would have claimed he wants to renovate.

Note: Any charge and bail lawyer can help you with this.

There is nothing to do than to liaise with the property owner .. the increment is almost everywhere especially Lagos . Make God EPP us . Some owners no do any upliftment of the house , na to just increase rent anyhow . Everybody just dey do as they like . SURVIVE OR DIE 💀

All of us were here when people were making comments and campaigning that building to rent is a waste of money and time. People advocated for saving money in their bank accounts and mutual funds and High yield accounts.

well.. economics faces us all. limited investment in housing will push prices up, high cost of building materials will increase prices.

we need a mindset shift

High cost of building materials my foot. Even houses built 10 years ago also use this lame excuse.

For an annual tenant, you do not increase arbitrarily and you must give 6 months notice. This is the position of the law.

When thentenant decides to enforce his legal r8ghts, people like you will complain he's suing his landlord.

Building materials for properties that have already been built? This man needs to consult a lawyer.

Negotiate.

That's the only thing you can do for now.

My Wife Landlord increased her shop rental from #500k annually to #1m after he told them he wants to renovate and gave them 6 months to look elsewhere.

Long story short, he didn't do any renovation only for him to put banner up for vacancies.

Then wifey called and he told her it is #1m annually and because she is an old tenant, he will waive the Agreement and Commission Fees for her.

As she is trying to negotiate, 4 out for the 6 shops were paid for same day.

Use the remaining 6 months to pack in where you will be asked to pay 1 million and shame the devil 😃
Stress but make sure you don't pay above 1.25M both agency and caution fee for the new place just to shame the devil. If possible let the new place be better of than your current place just to shame the devil

The increment na nationwide.
Get different streams of income and feel less pain.

If u can't build block house built iron house or even wooden house..... with our good climate u can survive the environment.....just a small piece of land is enough

Mine was increased by N200,000, so the guy is telling the truth

Even if you Sue your landlord,there won't be peace for you and you'll eventually leave the apartment (diabolically if need be)
No Nigerian has ever won such case.
