Is It Better To Rent a Car or Use Bolt/Uber in Nigeria Right Now? (Honest Comparison)

I’ve been thinking about this lately, especially with how transport costs are going up in Nigeria.

Between:

* Bolt / Uber rides
* And renting a car for a day

Which one actually makes more sense?

I decided to look at it from a real-life perspective.

OPTION 1: USING BOLT / UBER

Let’s say you have a busy day:

* 3–5 trips within Ilorin
* Maybe one longer movement

Average cost per trip now:
₦3,000 – ₦8,000 (depending on distance & time)

👉 Total for the day can easily hit:
₦15,000 – ₦30,000+

---

Pros:

* No stress about driving
* Pay as you go
* No commitment

---

Cons:

* Prices fluctuate a lot
* Waiting time sometimes long
* Multiple drivers, different experiences
* Not ideal for full-day movement

OPTION 2: RENTING A CAR (WITH DRIVER)

Average daily cost:
₦50,000 – ₦100,000 depending on the car

Pros:

* Car is available all day
* One driver, more consistent experience
* No waiting time
* Better for multiple movements

Cons:

* Higher upfront cost
* Not ideal if you only have 1–2 trips

REAL-LIFE SCENARIO

If you:

* Have many movements in one day
* Need comfort
* Don’t want delays

👉 Renting starts to make more sense.

But if:

* You’re just moving once or twice

👉 Bolt/Uber is still better.

---

HONEST OBSERVATION

Most people think renting a car is “too expensive”…

But when you actually calculate multiple Bolt/Uber trips in one day, the difference is not always as big as people think.

FROM WHAT I’VE SEEN

The experience also depends heavily on who you use.

A structured provider will:

* Be more reliable
* Communicate clearly
* Deliver a smoother experience

One example I’ve come across locally is Ride Vendor Limited, but I’m more interested in hearing what others here prefer.

LET’S DISCUSS

* Which one do you prefer currently?
* Have you ever calculated your daily Bolt/Uber spend?
* Has anyone switched from ride-hailing to car rental before?

Let’s hear real experiences.

FINAL THOUGHT

In Nigeria today, convenience is getting expensive either way.

The real question is:

👉 Do you prefer flexibility or consistency?

Hire a personal keke rider for your movement. Preferably a hausa person. He will take you wherever you want to go. Keke is open breeze will blow you as he is driving so you don't need AC. It's cheaper and safer. Because if bandits attack you can easily jump out and escape

Bolt is advisable even though it might not be raking money like renting out

The problem with renting out is, criminals can rent the car for operation, even though you might no be part of them but investigation in Nigeria will frustrate you

I can't even remember the last time I used bolt. That's one of the advantage of not being known

Economy don hit hard now people don't talk about buying cars but to rent or bolt.

The effect of bad governance from buhari down to tinubu.

Then before buhari and tinubu u could get a car for one million to 3 million clean corolla or honda very fuel economy and effecient now after 12yrs of bad choice and greed from the masses. This cars are sold for 10-12 million.

You can't even save for 3yrs to get a car not even 5 because inflation hits hard.. minimum wage is trash to what tax and inflation is doing to our income.

Yet people still support this government and APC with its soo good to be true lie reforms.

Reformzs are working according to their statistics but the common man is suffering.

No job
Fuel is high for an oil producing nation
House rent is cost
Foodstuffs are cost
Transport is very expensive
Electronics are veey high due to our exchange rate

Yet city boy movement is what some idiots chant.

Just imagine where we are now comparing rent a car or bolt undecided lipsrsealed lipsrsealed lipsrsealed

Funny but who go pay for fuel?
10liters is 10k+ now
With other little expenses.

Just check your wallet, know how much you have and plan for the day.

As someone who have driven bolt and uber in ilorin and Abuja previously I'll say your analysis is wrong.... Don't enter into the business now.... Fuel is too expensive.... If at all you want to drive go to lagos
