Due to the economic situation in Nigeria, many people go for fairly used phones popularly called 'UK-used phones' in Nigeria. The truth is that not all of these phones come from the UK. Apple controls about 50% of the phone market in the UK. Samsung controls about 30%, and the rest 20% is shared among Google, Xiaomi (Redmi and Poco), Huawei/Honor, Motorola/Sony, and Nothing (a London based phone manufacturer. Some of these phones are from Asia, China to be precise. You should also know that some of these phones have been declared missing or stolen, and as such, their IMEI numbers have been blacklisted. There are also others that have had their IP reported due to one fraudulent or illegal activity or the other initiated by the owners. That is why you might find it difficult to use certain used phones to access Google services and some other platforms. Others could have hardware issues that make the batteries overheat and runs down quickly. These are the type of phones that make you talk to yourself on the road while walking like an insane person. The phone could be 100% charged, and within few minutes, it is already at 10%. From my personal experience, buying new gadgets, be it phone or laptop is the best. It makes you enjoy the product peacefully the way you should. I bought my HP laptop brand-new in 2020. It is almost 6 years now, and I have never taken it to anywhere for repair, but I know people who bought so-called UK used laptops. Everyday, na one issue or the other. Today, na RAM, tomorrow na screen or flex. If you must buy a fairly used gadget, be it phone or laptop, make sure that you do a proper background check before buying. Do not just rush to pay. Make you nor go cry nwii for Nnewi.

Rapmoney:You are very correct in your writeup. Infact, anything that has to do with electronics, be it AC, Fridge, Computer, etc. Should be bought new if you don't want to be a regular visitor to repairers. I avoid buying used phones like plague no matter how clean it is, you can't compare it with a brand new one. |

I disagree please, there's UK used phone. I understand your point though, many of the so called UK phones are not from UK, but there are UK phones, I have bought a couple of UK used phones in Kassam stadium, Oxford. I bought laptop their and even ipad for my kids. They are cheap and functions well too. I bought Ipad 20 pounds, laptop 50 pounds and the phones 25 and 30 pounds respectively. They are working perfectly well with good batteries. |

Lawalemi:It has always been like that, Nigerians are second-hand-lovers of products from cloths to cars and electronics. That's the reason the civilised world see us as a big market for their used and discarded items. |

To confirm the origination of UK used phones, the best way is to buy directly from the importer, that is truly based in the UK or you can confirm directly imports their devices from the UK....... Used UK phones constitutes good value and the quality is usually A*, in comparison to brand new transsion devices, that are usually not properly tested and does not meet high quality standards..... |

London used phones have grade and remember to go with a certified phone engineer (softtware)during purchase there's still devices compatible with the google app store depending on the regional origination of the device. Sometimes it has to.so with pricing experience matters at this point |

Good point that's true to some extent but in an economy where people have to manage money, it's unrealistic to expect people to buy most items brand new. This advice should be rather directed at telling people what to look out for when buying used. Not asking them to buy new. A brand new iPhone 16 Pro Max for example is over 1.5m. you can see see fairly used ones for a little over million if you look well. Laptops now are for rich people. You can't expect people to become millionaires before they can start hustling online. That'll be a paradoxical ask. |

Why I also think it is not a good idea to buy used communication devices is that they can be preloaded with undetectable malware that can virtually ruin your life. |

Many are from middle east and Asia particularly China. If you are buying a foreign used phone ensure they have more than 5 or 10 of that particular device. Otherwise you will be forced to add huge money to collect a higher one if anything goes wrong. My iPhone have network issues for some locations but my other android phone see network better than the iPhone. When i went back they don’t have the exact iPhone. The only option is to upgrade it to higher model with huge amounts. I had to continue managing it like that. I later noticed its the Mtn band 3. If it switches to band 7 it better. But the problem is the iphone is always on the mtn band 3 which network is very bad. |

IronCondemned:Haha! Phone seller’s patronize these used phones, change their parts and rebrand and sell it as brand new. Very few people Know about this. If you go to a phone plaza, there is a word for it- First user or so. There are many used phones branded as new and in cartons! You won’t know the different unless you check the phone records and IMEI, not may people know this! |
