FG May Shut Eko Bridge Carriageway Over Pile Damage by Mmayeneyen(op): 10:47pm On May 05
The Federal Government may completely close a carriageway on the Eko Bridge in Lagos State due to damage of about eight piles.

The Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Mr Olufemi Dare, disclosed this at a press conference on Tuesday in Lagos.

He said that the closure would be subject to approval by the Minister of Works, Sen. Dave Umahi.

He said: “If he agrees with our recommendations, a carriageway of the bridge may be completely shut to traffic.”

Dare said that the move followed a recent joint inspection of the bridge by consultants, contractors and officials of the Federal Ministry of Works, which revealed that about eight piles on the bridge had been badly damaged.

He said that the damage of the piles posed a huge risk to users of the bridge.

Dare attributed the damage largely to activities of miners and scavengers, saying that some of the piles had lost their concrete covering, leaving only exposed reinforcement.

He said that the minister of works would visit Lagos for a further assessment of the bridge and to take a final decision on the recommendations.

On Carter Bridge, Dare said the structure had exceeded its serviceability lifespan and had been declared irredeemable.

He confirmed that Carter Bridge would be demolished and reconstructed.

“It has been in the public domain that Carter bridge will be demolished.

“It has exceeded its serviceability limit and cannot be redeemed. A new bridge will be constructed,” he said.

He said that a rigorous bidding process involving major construction firms had been concluded on the reconstruction, with China Civil Engineering Construction Company emerging the preferred contractor.

According to him, the minister will, during his visit, officially hand over the project to the contractor.

Dare also said that the minister would inspect the Marine Bridge, where some defects were recently observed in spite of ongoing construction work, to determine necessary interventions.

He said the minister would equally assess the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project implementation.

“The Section One of the coastal highway has reached about 98 per cent completion. Motorists can now travel about 47km from Ahmadu Bello Way to Eleko on concrete pavement,” he said.

Dare said that the minister’s visit would provide an opportunity to take critical decisions on the projects to enhance safety and improve infrastructure delivery in Lagos State.

It shows that we have Leaders without Vision!
Corrupt leaders who see these foreigners as a means of doing crooked business and siphoning money to their foreign Accounts.
`Until we get rid of these generation of "Old Looters" and their current, "younger Hustlers" on Social Media, Nationals of Countries like South Africa will continue to humiliate Nigerians, despite the fact that we are far better than them, since they realize how desperate our bright minds are, to make something out of their life, anywhere in the world.
Imagine having a choice to live and work in a Country with 24/7 Power supply and one where even its leaders use Generators and Solar Power in their own Homes alone, leaving the Masses in Darkness, which will any sane mind chose?

Nigeria is an embarrassment to the Black Race honestly, but we have the potential to become a very great Nation, if we have the right set of Leaders.

If the carriageway is closed ... what plans are in place to reduce congestion on alternative routes? ...what alternative routes are in place? ... would the public be informed? Short sighted people everywhere.

How will they guard scavengers from the piles again. Carter bridge will be completely demolish. Eko bridge will be shut down. Only third mainland bridge to the island.

Who’s to blame for that? The students, the school or the educational system?

This people will never cease to amaze me.... They have been on that bridge for long with their foreign engr without knowing that it was bad ..not until now proper siphoning mood activated they came up with a crazy figure 6 piles so we go fear .... May God just have mercy on Nigeria...
Re: FG May Shut Eko Bridge Carriageway Over Pile Damage by yemmywesey(m): 6:49am On May 06
They should not tamper with that bridge oo, they closed that same bridge down for over 1 year for repairs, and opening it , they locked the bridge again for another 6 months, during all this time of closure they didn't know that the reinforcement is exposed.

Was watching a construction video whereby a government official was saying "For best quality we use foreign contractors, just to show you we don't joke with quality... " I just shook my head

Those clamoring for Nigerian expertise in fields like this should laugh. We all recall how many of our faculty of engineering back in school were overpopulated and I'll equipped?
Now, tell me you want a quack engineer building bridges for you after spending huge sums in the contracts? I think not.
