Fitness And Gym In Nigeria And The Rest Of Africa by nex(op): 7:03am On May 08
Wasn't quite sure if there were threads on fitness, gym, running, dieting, and healthy living on Nairaland, especially comparing how it is done in Nigeria to what happens across the rest of Africa, so I thought to start one.

Lately, the gym culture has been booming globally, and it may have been one of the positive consequences of the COVID 19 Lockdown, as well as the general health consciousness of Gen Z and also the BBL maintenance and customer acquisition trend among the baddies. Some people even see the gym and exercising as another avenue to create social media content, but this all goes a long way in making a lot of us more conscious of our fitness, wellness, and health.

One of the challenges I have noticed personally in Nigeria is the high cost of access to fitness centres and gyms, some of which may cost about the equivalent of workers' monthly minimum wage just to subscribe for a month. I would like to find out if it is a similar story in other parts of Africa, and find ways to disrupt this high cost of gym and fitness access.

Another aspect I'm trying to gain more clarity on is what percentage of Nigerians are actually embracing this fitness culture, because Nigeria is a very well populated country with almost 250,000,000 people, so a mere 10% fitfam enthusiasts may seem like quite a lot in a country with a few good gyms, and a few good roads to walk, run, or cycle on. Many say that Senegal is the fitness capital of Africa, and I hope to visit someday.

Finally, for now, I'm interested in knowing what can be done to increase the number of people proactively living fit and active lives. Not just being satisfied with seeing people who have been warned by their doctors to keep fit due to the risk of dying early, or the ladies trying to keep their Brazilian Butt Lifts in shape, I'm obsessed with how we can convert more people to start getting active just because they know it's the best way to live life.

If you have any additions, submissions, or suggestions, please share. I'm about to go for a walk in the rain.

The problem is that we start late in everything we want to do.

I started pushups at age 15. Till today, no matter what I eat, my tummy never moves away from the flat size. It's called discipline over time, something an average Nigerian doesn't possess.

and apparently you have none, does that mean you’re a failure? And one thing people like you don’t know is, your unnecessary hate towards the culture is lowkey what keeps it trending more.

Re: Fitness And Gym In Nigeria And The Rest Of Africa by Offpoint1: 9:59am On May 08
You don't expect a country whereby 90% of her citizenship are poor to remember what gym is.
5am an average Nigerian is concern about going out for his/her daily bread.

As for Lagos gym: Gym on the island is a place where people went to show their cars or BBL.

An hour jogging Monday-Friday is not negotiable for me personally

Leave that thing.

I started even earlier.

Just don't fall off for any reason as you age.

Work, family, illness, distance from familiar surroundings, etc.

Whatever level of fitness I have now, I started way back in Junior secondary schools days.

Push ups, pull ups, planks, etc. I no Dey carry weight to bulk up but doing these few exercises at home helps you keep a fit form.
Re: Fitness And Gym In Nigeria And The Rest Of Africa by Originalsly: 10:08am On May 08
Why do we even need gyms? I wish someone can make the case. I can see the need for gyms in urban cities where there is not much open spaces to exercise .... and in regions where climate is a factor in preventing people from engaging in outdoor physical activities . ... as in too cold Toronto ....or too hot Las Vegas. These are the conditions that made gyms popular ...a place where one can exercise all year round . And in Nigeria?.... where there's lots of open spaces.... fresh air ... we can exercise while tending to kitchen gardens ... killing two birds with one stone .... but no ...we must be like abroad ....and be paying through the nose for it.

Enugu seems worse, although there's a different vibe added like cultural drumming joggers/parade where local culture meets western.

All the same, keep fit and live well

Find a local gym around you and you're good to go. Those big names offer the same services only packaged, make sure you have a body goal target. That's it

I no longer go the gym anymore because it has been a great help to maintain my body physique and general overall health after eating junk’s and unhealthy foods offshore, every since all these Gen Z ladies are setting tripod and taking unnecessary pictures and videos for the gram… I feel so uncomfortable, that’s why I prefer jogging and cycling now
