Difference Between Polytechnic And Universities In Nigeria. by EBossupdates01(op): 4:36pm On Jul 08, 2020
[b]Difference between polytechnic and university in Nigeria.

*{1a}* In University the minimum duration of your programme depends on the course of study. It can be 3, 4, 5, 6 or even 7 years

*{1b}* In Polytechnic your minimum duration of study is 5 years. Two years for National Diploma (ND), one year compulsory Industrial training (IT), two years for (HND)
*__________________________________________________________________*

*{2a}* You can study any course in a University; Science, Arts, Law, Medicine, Engineering, Social Science and Commercial courses.

*{2b}* In Polytechnic you can’t study courses like Medicine and Surgery, medical related courses, Law, and some social science course.
*__________________________________________________________________*

*{3a}* After completing your course in University, and you graduate with at least second class lower, you can go for a Master Degree in your programme.

*{3b}* After completing your HND Programme in a Polytechnic, you can’t apply for a Masters Degree with just your HND Certificate. You must do a compulsory one year Postgraduate Diploma (PGD).
*__________________________________________________________________*

*{4a}* Tussle for Admission is Once: Once you gain admission into a Nigerian University to attain your first degree, you don’t need any other entrance examination to get your Degree. Say you gained admission to study Statistics, you won’t write any other entrance examination again. You just need to write semester examinations.

*{4b}* Tussle for Admission is Twice: In Polytechnic, there is ND and HND. First you gain admission to get your ND certificate. After the programme you must apply for admission to get the HND certificate. This means writing the entrance examination or applying for admission twice.
*__________________________________________________________________*

*{5a}* Once you start, you must wait until you complete your four or five years programme before you can use your certificate to apply for job

*{5b}* In polytechnic, after two years in the school you get your ND certificate. You can use this certificate to apply for job. But note that lately people who have ND are under paid.
*__________________________________________________________________*

{6a} Except for some few courses, University teaching is theory based.

{6b} Most of their courses are practical based. Just few courses are theory based.
*__________________________________________________________________*

{7a} University requires higher UTME Score. In 2019, the lowest JAMB cut-off mark was 160. However, some Universities minimum was 180 while others 200.

{7b} Polytechnics accepts students with low JAMB UTME scores. In 2019, most Polytechnics accepted JAMB candidates who scored 120 in UTME

I was in the best polytechnic and one of the best universities in Nigeria. I studied engineering. Just dead the matter if you've not attended both. The skills you talk about is a big hoax. You have to have been in both to understand.

True. Polytechnics are living on past glory, same as our universities. The Polytechnic "Practical" Narrative is a scam this days. They don't do praticals as expected anymore

In Nigeria, they messed up polytechnic, in reality polytechnic is far more better than universities. They're well taught, well exposed and 100% employable. I don't know why the discrimination against polytechnics. But, the system on board now had messed up Polytechnic system of education. Its not as it use to be before.
Re: Difference Between Polytechnic And Universities In Nigeria. by NwaliE01: 11:04pm On May 08
#3a is only correct in Nigeria.

I did my Master's in Engineering abroad with my HND.

Abroad, there's no significant difference between the two.

Let me tell y'all the fact
I went to one of the best polytechnics and also acquire B.Eng in the university and I must tell you that the level of teaching is different.
If you've pass through both, you'll know what I'm saying. Polytechnic is really trying especially some good schools like the one I attended but the courses and curriculum is far different. University is above polytechnic.
Polytechnics aren't even practical base anymore. Universities do more research as well

University course nor be joke oo

I did advanced level program in Ilorin that year, math, chem, and physics, the calculus we solve in ijmb na petroleum training institute HND calculus, HND 2 if am not mistaken, those auxiliary, and Laplace transformation, and those kini them, I saw their past question, na wetin I redo for 200 level math 211, some of the courses in HND na 200 work with small 300 level work

University research touch ground, pass polytechnic, even some grounded university dey do practical pass poly self

Bottom line is that the course outline aren't desame

Another thing is that na prof dey handle us that year for 300 level/400 level
Na prof be Rector for polytechnic, HOD must be prof in university, if am not mistaken, u don't have prof in polytechnic,

Then in Nigeria public university, in those days
Strike must hold u
But in polytechnic u hardly ever hear strike grin
U will know ASUU and NASUU grin
If u dey university
Nonsense kontry

Which skills lol. Either you went to a polytechnic and trying to make it more relevant that it seems or you obviously dont know what you're saying. Bring the best polytechnic anywhere in the world and bring the best university anywhere in the world let's compare the global impact of their products(students)

Many, many years ago, a friend of mine graduated from Yabatech (electrical engineering) and for some reasons best known to him, still went to Unilag via direct entry for a second-degree on the same course.

No be because of too much tears make them change Laspotech(Lagos state polytechnic) to Lasutech(Lagos State University of Science and Technology)

One of the reasons why laspotech was changed to Lasutech was to upgrade its academic status, bridge the gap between HND and BSc holders, and increase university access.

Also, try check the academic requirements for both.

Poly kor, skills ni undecided undecided

You are a liar. Polytechnic graduates in Nigeria are considered stronger than university graduates in several practical and technical areas, especially in industries that value hands-on ability over theory.
Re: Difference Between Polytechnic And Universities In Nigeria. by CrystalMax:
I attended one of the best Polytechnics in Nigeria - where I earned a National Diploma and Higher National Diploma in Electrical/Electronic Engineering.
I proceeded to pursue a Bachelor's degree & Master's degree at a reputable Federal University in Nigeria.

From a man who has experienced it all first-hand, it is baseless comparing the two education systems. The goal of each system are completely different.

In the Polytechnic for engineering programs (when I was a student), all your Engineering courses are graded like this:
- Examination: 60%
- Practicals: 20%
- Continuous Assessment: 20%
For you to get an A in my school then, you need an overall score of 75% or more, some Polytechnics adopted 80% back then. It is lesser in the University, all you need is just 70% or more.

The focus on structured practicals gives you ample exposure to real life scenarios.

On the other hand, the University Education graded all courses like this:
- Examination : 70%
- Continuous Assessment : 30%
- A dedicated course on practical which is graded similarly.

While the Polytechnic Education trains you to be a handy man, the University trains you to be more!
The exposure in the University Education is broader. In Nigerian Universities; You get to do GES/GST/GNS courses in Sociology (Nigerian People & Culture), Philosophy (Logic & Philosophy), ICT and the likes. Whereas in the Polytechnic (when I was there), the GNS was just Citizenship Education, Use of English and Use of Library; which is apparently limited.
I read more books in my 3years HND-B.Eng conversion program, than I read in ND & HND program combined, despite doing over 50% similar courses.

Emphasis are less on research in the Polytechnic as compared to that of University.

These systems are not meant for same purpose. If you want to choose, choose the one that best meet your needs; Polytechnic Education focuses on preparing you to be a hands-on personnel, while the University focuses on preparing you to manage or give direction to hands-on personnel.

Lastly, giving my 13years+ work experience in the Nigerian Labour Market, I strongly recommend a University Education.

The discrimination stems from research gaps. They hardly take research seriously in Polytechnics as compared to the University.

Also because here in Nigeria, we glorify titles and lecturers with the big academic titles are lesser in Nigerian Polytechnics. You seldom have numerous Professors in the Polytechnic. Most of their lecturers are Master's degree or Ph.D holders at most. This is a big deal in the Nigerian setting where Professors are considered to be Lords over subject matter; they are supposed to be Subject Matter Experts- an authority in their fields.

Ask any Nigerian Polytechnic Student (past or present), How many Professors taught him/her in school? You will be surprised.

While this is not a correct measure of knowledge base or knowledge transfer approach, it has undoubtedly impacted the outlook of Polytechnic graduates.
Re: Difference Between Polytechnic And Universities In Nigeria. by Bobokanbai93: 2:57am On May 09
Polytechnics don't really do practical this days again. The practical they claim you'll learn there is a hoax. They've literally lost their purpose, making it unprofitable spending 5 years there. Read and pour on exam day is the order of the day.

Engineering and engineering technology are not the, far far different from each other

To wasen the politechnic discrimination, you can't not join NSE Nigeria society of engineers after your HND except you go for your PGD. Too bad.
