To wasen the politechnic discrimination, you can't join NSE Nigeria society of engineers after your HND except you go for your PGD. Too bad. |

Note: Universities are research based and not only theory. In furtherance to this, a theory is the highest level of scientific understanding. A few Polytechnics offers medical related courses. Kwara State Polytechnic Ilorin, Kwara State Medical Imaging, Health Information Management (newly approved by NBTE) Ogun State Polytechnic of Health and Allied Sciences Ilese-Ijebu, Ogun State Medical Lab Technician, Pharmacy Technician, Paramedics, Health Information Management, Environmental Health, Dental Technology, Community Health |

Badadvisor:The two are the same. In fact the polytechnic is better in the west. Nigeria just decided to be unfortunate by descriminating against polytechnic education |

mrvitalis:And this is the kind of mindset and reasoning why Nigeria will never be industrialised. Name one invention from all our years of producing academic engineers in nigeria. All the tech and gadget you import from china, you think they are created by emphasis on head knowledge without practical? We have so many university engineering graduates. How has that helped Nigeria to industrialise? Most of them are hustling for bank jobs....waste of 5 years of learning fluid mechanics thermodynamics engineering maths etc with zero opportunity for real world application |

Loools. Na so dem dey washy us the time wedey polytechnic oo. Thank God I went to uniben and saw the difference. Practicals constrain you to the ecosystem of the designers intentions, schemes, scope and even capability, the theory makes you the designer it self. University is broader in scope and exposure. Una one start? |

edoairways:So, why are there no core medical related courses? Everybody should maintain their lane, university is encompassing of everything while poly is for technicals... |

DuttyChuks:Polytechnics are not better than universities. They bought have different targets. Polytechnics are designed to train low and middle level officers like technicians and technologists. Universities on the other hand are designed for research and theories while prepping people for higher managerial and research roles. They are both inmportant for society to thrive and no one should be relegated for the other. It is just a shame that Nigeria has not utilised the advantages of both systems to the maximum. |

Thank you so much for giving this firsthand experience to us. I am a product of HND Accountancy. I was discriminated against when I went for job interview. Then I vowed that my children won't attend polytechnic. Whether polytechnic gives hands-on skill to their graduates; you have said it all that university graduates are trained to direct hands-on skillers. Nigeria govt shall convert all polytechnics to degree awarding like in USA, Uk and Canada CrystalMax: |

Deceiving your self is the worst of all lies. Which practical polytechnic has? The practical in the two are not different in their related courses. Polytechnic were originally designed for practical and more technical aspects but in reality non exist and they're mere trailing the universities in all aspects. I had education in both. In truth, university is ahead of polytechnic because the former is too porous and created too many loophole for students to take advantage. edoairways: |

I EBossupdates01:HND graduates that are employed in the MDAs (Ministries, Departments and Agencies ) cannot rise above grade level 14 with just their HND certificate alone. They would have to aquire PGD and Master and apply for conversion before rising above grade level 14 while University graduates can rise above grade level 14 in MDAs. HND graduates cannot lecture in a university with only their HND qualifications alone while a University graduate can lecture in a polytechnic or monotechnic institution with their qualifications. HND graduates are looked down upon in Nigeria while University graduates are regarded as superior to HND graduates though both of them undergo NYSC scheme. HND graduates can use their qualifications to apply for first degree programme in the University but university graduates do not need HND certificates |

University make you an administrator while the Polytechnic make you more of an hands-on-doer. It will be overreaching to believe one is superior to the other. |

CrystalMax:I attended one of the best polytechnics (if not the best) in Nigeria around the early 2000s. I studied Food Technology, with my 1-year industrial training being at NAFDAC Central Laboratory in Oshodi Lagos. These trainings gave me industrial leverage over the MSc counterparts after I moved to a university for a BSc. In other words, I was getting jobs MSc graduates were scrambling for. Food industries rooted for my technical expertise in PRACTICAL food production and quality assurance. Let me shock you. During my NAFDAC training. I and my fellow polytechnic colleague were applauded for our dexterity in reagent standardization and laboratory analysis on Food samples. Several university students got insecure about this and began projecting their theoretical knowledge. Lol....okay, Mr theoretical, handle your sample and apparatus like a true expert. For where.....? Lol. My Polytechnic foundation gave me an edge over university's theoretical approach. BSc 6 month IT can not beat a polytechnic's 4 month initial IT and 1 year final IT. Never. |

TyroneP:Research you said? Lmao..... Research is in a state of coma in Nigeria. So all the BSc graduates does is to scramble for jobs meant for HND grads. HND isn't contesting with MSc or PhD graduates. Its with the BSc ones. |

SonOfEl:I always feel sorry for you and your kind. I have a Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering and masters degree in telecommunications engineering and it beats my imagination that a polytechnic guy thinks he knows engineering more. If only you knew how polytechnic guys are being maltreated in the field of engineering you will feel sorry for them |
| Re: Difference Between Polytechnic And Universities In Nigeria. by SonOfEl(m): 12:07pm On May 09 |
numericalguy:I also have a masters degree. The issue here is between HND and BSC, not Masters or PhD. Yes ploy holders are being discriminated at by insecure university grads in the industry suffering from main character syndrome. Unbiased industries actually treat HND graduates fairly. |

I was in the best polytechnic and one of the best universities in Nigeria. I studied engineering. Just dead the matter if you've not attended both. The skills you talk about is a big hoax. You have to have been in both to understand. In my case, I agree with the guy. I studied both in poly and uni. I studied Food Science and Technology. Those in the food and beverage industry will understand the immense contribution and value of the HND input in the industry. |
| Re: Difference Between Polytechnic And Universities In Nigeria. by SonOfEl(m): 12:19pm On May 09 |
MOST university-only grads in BSc knows little in terms of technical application of the field as compared to Poly grads |

SonOfEl:You know nothing of the discrimination which is why you are talking like this. I can never advise my worst enemy to go to polytechnic for any reason. The discrimination is 100% there even at B.Sc and HND level and it will remain there. FYI, my late dad had OND in mechanical engineering from Kaduna polytechnic and he swore that none of his children will ever go to the polytechnic so I know what I am saying when I say people like you have no idea what you are talking about |
