A student of the University of Benin, popularly known as UNIBEN, was reportedly shot dead near the institution’s main gate on Saturday, sparking panic among students and residents in the area.

According to reports circulating on social media, the victim was allegedly attacked by unidentified gunmen in the vicinity of the university’s main entrance. Eyewitness accounts claimed the sound of gunshots caused fear and confusion as students and passersby fled the scene for safety.

As of the time of filing this report, the identity of the deceased student has not been officially confirmed, while authorities are yet to release a detailed statement regarding the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The development has triggered reactions online, with many students and concerned Nigerians calling for improved security around the university environment.

The incident comes amid previous concerns over violent attacks involving students in and around the UNIBEN community.

Part-time student shot dead at UNIBEN’s main gate

A yet-to-be-identified part-time political science student of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) was shot dead inside his vehicle at the main gate of Ugbowo campus on Sunday.

According to a video sighted by Tribune Online, the deceased was shot dead shortly after completing his semester examinations, a claim we could not independently confirm as of the time of this report.

However, the management of UNIBEN has reportedly dissociated its students and staff from the incident, linking it to alleged cult activities outside the campus.

The management expressed regret over the loss of life and urged members of the university community to remain calm, vigilant and continue their academic activities peacefully.

Meanwhile, the Edo State Command of the Nigeria Police is yet to issue any official statement confirming the incident as of the time of filing this report.
