The island is overrun with more than 120 cats that were originally brought in to deal with mice - but now they outnumber people six to one

An army of feral cats rules a remote island in southern Japan outnumbering humans six to one.

More than 120 cats swarm the island with only a handful of humans for company, mostly pensioners who didn't join the waves of migrants seeking work in the cities after World War Two.

The cats were originally introduced to the mile-long island of Aoshima to deal with mice that plagued fishermen's boats, but have taken over the area since multiplying in the last fifty years.

Aoshima, a 30-minute ferry ride off the coast of Ehime prefecture, had been home to 900 people in 1945.

The only sign of human activity now is the boatload of day-trippers from the mainland, visiting what is locally known as Cat Island.

With no restaurants, cars, shops or kiosks selling snacks, Aoshima is no tourist haven. But cat lovers are not complaining.

"There is a ton of cats here, then there was this sort of cat witch who came out to feed the cats which was quite fun," said 27-year-old Makiko Yamasaki. "So I'd want to come again."

Why growing up there was this specie of snakes will don't kill in our community no matter what, and these snakes don't bite even if you mistakenly step on them.

These snakes often goes to people home
Sometimes we can be sleeping on top of the bed while they sneak in under, sometimes they laid the door frame, sometimes down behind the local clay port my grandmother used to preserve drive water water. My grandmother knew but wouldn't tell us until when our eyes eventually caught on it that's when my grandmother will talk to it and they will slowly move out of the house.

There was once my aunt delivered a baby and decided to come home for care, lo we heard my aunt called out in the night we woke up when rushed in behold we see this snake right at the bed frame where the baby laid his head. My grandmother told us to calm down that it came to see the baby and talk to it and rolled back to little hole in the ceiling.

It was like that in every home, even elders will pack their motorcycle and help them cross the the if found on the road trying to cross to avoid it being killed.

There was this shrine in the community where these creatures will come all out in every particular market day, and in such days elders of the community will put palmfront across the road leading to that shrine and the village square so strangers wouldn't take that route.

In such days they will come out in numbers filled the community square where the shrine was located, elders who were fearless enough still walk through there without being bitten by any, but motorcycle, bicycles and cars will not go in there in such days.

Cats are animals in a different league. That's how one male kitten came into my house 2 summers ago. he was tiny, I guessed he was only a few months old, he inspected everywhere in my house including my toilet and finally made himself comfortable on my sofa. He's been living with me since then, I can't say I own him but he lives with me.

God said have dominion, which means we are to protect the animals and help them, for we have the ability to do what no other animal can do.

It does not mean we are to oppress them or kill them, can you see how the Japanese have dominion, they bbring out the best in other animals, the animals are happy as a result.

In Japan there is real dominion, the fishes live in clear waters, the Monkeys are thriving and even steal from tourist, the cats have their Island.

I give him his space, he only let me know when he wants food or when he needs to toilet. Other than that, he's quite a chilled little guy.
