Lagos NBA Chairman, Human Rights Committee Seek Stronger Police–Lawyers' Collaboration During Courtesy Visit to AIG FCID Annex Lagos

The Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association Lagos Branch, Uchenna Ogunedo Akingbade, alongside the Vice Chairman of the Branch and the Chairman of the Human Rights Committee, James Sonde, on Monday, 12 May 2026, paid a courtesy visit to the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex, Alagbon Close, Ikoyi, Lagos, National Association of Online Security News Publishers, NAOSNP can report.

The visit was aimed at strengthening collaboration between the legal profession and the police in promoting the rule of law, protecting human rights, and enhancing effective justice delivery.

During the engagement, the delegation, comprising members of the NBA Lagos Human Rights Committee and its various sub-committees, introduced the leadership of the committee and sought to establish a structured channel of engagement with the FCID Annex to encourage constructive dialogue and cooperation.

Discussions during the meeting centred on opportunities for collaboration in key areas such as capacity-building initiatives for police officers, improved dialogue on issues affecting the legal profession and the public, protection of suspects’ rights, and strengthening justice delivery through effective investigative, judicial, and forensic processes.

The committee also explored frameworks for coordinated detention and custody visits in line with established police procedures, referral mechanisms for addressing human rights concerns, and possible joint public sensitisation programmes aimed at promoting awareness of citizens’ rights and responsibilities.

Speaking during the engagement, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the FCID Annex, AIG Simeon U. Akpanudom psc fdc mspsp MNIM, welcomed the delegation and commended the Nigerian Bar Association for its commitment to advancing justice, promoting the rule of law, and safeguarding citizens’ rights.

He stressed that sustained engagement between the police and key stakeholders in the justice sector remains critical to strengthening accountability, enhancing public trust, and promoting effective policing.

The AIG further reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force, under the leadership of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Riliwan Disu , to people-centred policing. He emphasized the importance of continuous professional training and capacity development for both police officers and legal practitioners in order to enhance compliance with human rights standards and ensure efficient justice delivery.

Both parties expressed their commitment to sustained collaboration and agreed to maintain regular engagements that will further strengthen institutional cooperation in the collective pursuit of peace, security, and justice.
