The Presidency has criticised former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi over his pledge to serve only one term if elected president, saying his political history shows inconsistency.

Obi had said in a viral clip from an interview scheduled to air on News Central TV on Thursday that he would not remain in office beyond four years “even with a gun to my head.”

Reacting on Thursday in a post on X, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, dismissed the promise, insisting that Obi’s past political decisions show a pattern of broken loyalty.

“If you believe Peter Obi’s promise to serve only one term as president, you’ll believe anything,” Onanuga said.

He said Obi had previously pledged loyalty to the All Progressives Grand Alliance while serving as governor of Anambra State but later defected to the Peoples Democratic Party.

“Peter Obi’s pledges have always been short-lived. He ultimately abandoned APGA for the PDP, and since then, he has drifted from one political platform to another—a political rolling stone,” he stated.

According to Onanuga, Obi’s political movements over the years show that his promises are unreliable.

“By his own actions, Peter Obi has shown that his word cannot be trusted. His promises are as fleeting as his political allegiances,” he added.

Obi was the Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 presidential election, where he finished third behind President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party.

He has since joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress following his exit from the African Democratic Congress coalition ahead of the 2027 presidential election scheduled for January 16, 2027.

They know the real result of the last election. It's now obvious Atiku wasn't second. Because I ask myself why Atiku is not more of threat than Obi. I now think that it was deliberate to not make Obi second so that his support base don't have false hope that he could have won the election. I challenge anyone to go and do the stats of election results in areas like army barracks, universities, highbrow estates etc and tell me who won. That is not a statistical representation of the whole result but I personally monitored the results across the country in these places. Why? These are areas where security or elite live so manipulation and thuggery is not likely here. I know my results, you can do your findings. I can understand Bayo Onanuga’s confusion.

A man who serves propaganda for a living will naturally be shocked when he encounters someone speaking with consistency and integrity.

He is loyal to Tinubu, an internationally notorious individual, forger and identity thiéf whose words can't be trusted. so he assumes every politician operates on the same template. That’s the environment he’s used to.

But Peter Obi is not his principal.

Not everyone treats public trust like a disposable campaign flyer.

Honestly, I don’t understand why Peter Obi’s one-term pledge is being overflogged as though he proposed abolishing the Constitution. The Constitution already provides four years per term and a maximum of two terms.

So what exactly is the crisis here?

The real issue is not tenure length, but what is done with the tenure.

Tinubu’s administration did not need four years to push Nigeria deeper into debt, worsen inflation, multiply hardship, weaken the naira, worsen insecurity, and normalize darkness as a national policy through endless electricity failures and grid collapse

So if damage can be done this quickly, why are people pretending meaningful progress cannot also happen within four years?

Nigerians are not asking for long speeches or long tenures anymore.

They are asking for competence, credibility, and results.
