The Drama 3.5/10
Beautiful nonsense, they should have cast upcoming actors as the main leads and I’ll just pass without watching it cus the trailer too is somehow but I didn’t imagine it to be this bad.
It's just the star power that will make anyone see that movie. I can't remember the last time an A24 project actually brought me satisfaction. Just a waste of a project.

lol yeah i could easily see the work that went into making this, and it came out beautifully.

Like the discourse we have always have here, Nigeria has such a great history across many facets, that would make for such wonderful period piece motion pictures, but our producers here are so "scared" to indulge, they will rather dance around the same shallow, loud, razz, soulless films because they are safe bets and to claim the title of biggest box office return every year, with no lasting impression. I was having a discourse with someone about ,"Micheal" (2026) , and we joked about how there has never been a "Fela Aníkúlápó Kuti Biopic" , i mean this guy popularize "Afrobeat" which is such a force now worldwide, and there isn't a specific film about him?. I did a little digging, and found out the film is actually in development since 2023, and you guessed right, an American production company secured the rights from his estate. So if it takes foreign inputs to tell our stories, i am all for it tbh.

I care deeply about this industry so so much, unfortunately 😞....i have so many good people around me, invested in it, in someway, you included now lol..
So i really do hope it continues to succeed, like this film has just done 👍🏿
I think I've said this to abduleez before.
We need to have a serious conversation about why a definitive Fela Kuti film or an actually solid Civil War doesn't exist yet. The talent in Nigeria isn't the problem—we have world-class cinematographers, sound designers, and editors who are proving their worth on every new project. The problem is a chronic lack of investment in anything that isn't a guaranteed commercial hit.

Right now, the Nigerian film market is essentially a one-trick pony. The data shows that if it’s not a comedy, and if Funke Akindele isn't on the poster, the money isn't coming. This 'comedy-first' economy is stifling our ability to tell the stories that actually defined us as a nation. A Fela biopic requires the kind of budget, research, and global distribution that usually requires Hollywood involvement. We have the brilliant minds right here in Lagos, but until we bridge the funding gap through strategic international partnerships, our most iconic stories will continue to be told by outsiders or not told at all.

The danger of this current trend isn't just financial; it’s a matter of cultural preservation. When we allow the market to be dictated solely by what is 'easy to sell,' we inadvertently outsource our own history. If Nollywood doesn't find a way to fund these heavy-hitting historical narratives, we will eventually find ourselves watching a Fela biopic produced entirely by a foreign studio, featuring a foreign lead, and told through a foreign lens—simply because they were the ones willing to put up the $50 million required to do it right.

We need an environment where a gritty, historical epic can coexist with a blockbuster comedy. We have already proven we can handle the technical complexity; our colorists and sound engineers are ready for the challenge. Now, the challenge lies with the investors and the government to create the fiscal frameworks—tax rebates, film funds, and co-production treaties—that make 'the big story' a viable investment. It’s like we’re driving a Ferrari in a school zone. We’ve got all this insane horsepower—all this talent and technical skill—but we’ve got nowhere to actually let it run. We’re revving the engine just to crawl at 20mph because nobody wants to take a financial risk on anything that isn't a 'safe' laugh.

We have the 'Ferrari' ready to go; we just need someone to stop treating the industry like a playground and actually give us the open road to tell our real stories.

Great night...... Dominance. 🤞🏽😎
I literally had no doubt this would win. It's the most thoughtful and visually compelling movie I've ever seen from a Nigerian. First time I saw it if I can remind you, I wasn't even calling the director a Nigerian or even labeling it as a Nollywood film cos in my opinion it wasn't.... at the time mostly because I worked with mubi for the distribution rights to the film and even knew the editor Omar Castro so I thought it was like Beast of no Nation kind of movie. So I was pleasantly surprised.
So congrats on your movie. You all did fabulously well, hope your name is in the credits

Film Music...My Father's Shadow (2025). A case study

Music is a character in the film.” — Howard Shore

One of my favourite aspects of a film is always the music behind it. Film is best described as a visual medium, yet one of its most effective storytelling tools is the music. Even before the characters speak or any significant plot movement occurs, you can often tell where the movie is going simply by listening to the score or song. Long after you've seen the movie, you begin to associate its sound not just with the film, but with different emotions and facets of the human condition.

When you hear Hans Zimmer’s Cornfield Chase, you aren't just associating it with Interstellar (2014) anymore, you now associate it with space, ascension, transcendence, interstellar travel. Or when you hear John Williams’s The Imperial March (Darth Vader’s theme), you instantly think of authority, totalitarianism and menace. Hearing James Horner’s Southampton from Titanic (1996), immediately evokes voyage and longing. I could go on and on, but the point here is that film music is the very heart and soul of cinema.

In Nollywood, the blatant neglect of this important aspect of filmmaking is perhaps why many modern films feel devoid of soul... unnecessarily loud, yet emotionally empty. There is simply nothing connecting you to the story. At least old Nollywood used to try in this regard. They developed scores to give “life” to scenes. There was that particular “gong” sound whenever someone was about to do something sinister, and once you heard Stanley Okorie singing "Why Is the World So Wicked", you instantly knew Nkiru Sylvanus had probably just been orphaned, while Patience Ozokwor, playing the wicked aunty, was somewhere plotting to make her life even worse! 😩

This is perhaps why our pop culture is still dominated by "Old Nollywood". The sound bites, the scores, the dramatic cues content creators still use them today because they remain excellent reference points, instantly recognizable even beyond these shores. But take something like "Behind the Scene" (2025), a supposed student of "New Nollywood"… what exactly is there to reference years from now? What is there to dominate pop culture? Certainly not the story, and most definitely not the music or sound design.

Watching My Father's Shadow the other day, I was particularly impressed by the score, soundtrack and sound design. It felt so thoughtfully put together and, at times, helped me connect to the story even more deeply than the action unfolding on screen. I quickly went to Apple Music and was pleased to find that the soundtrack had thankfully been digitally released.

I haven’t followed the Africa Magic Viewers' Choice Awards for years because they’ve always had a knack for rewarding mediocrity, but I checked this year and saw that this film won Best Score/Soundtrack, among other notable awards, and I was genuinely so pleased. Very, very deserved 👏🏿
If film music is the heart of the movie, then the screenplay is undoubtedly its skeletal system—the invisible architecture that holds every emotion, beat, and revelation in place.
In the same way that "Old Nollywood" understood the power of a dramatic "gong" to signal impending doom, its writers also understood the power of a singular, driving conflict. In the rush to join "New Nollywood," many modern screenwriters have traded that honesty for hollow "aesthetic" dialogue—scripts that look good on paper but lack the marrow of real human experience.
This is why My Father’s Shadow (2025) feels like such a breath of fresh air. Dthe film doesn't just present a plot; it weaves a "magical and gritty portrait" that feels deeply rooted in the complexities of Nigerian life, much like his previous work Lizard. The writing here is patient—a rarity in a sea of films that feel like they’re shouting to keep your attention.
What struck me most about the writing in My Father’s Shadow was the nuanced handling of intergenerational trauma and memory. The dialogue isn't just there to move us from Point A to Point B; it’s used to explore the "processes of understanding trauma," where the lines between reality and fantasy often blur (Howard, 2026). We aren't just watching a story about a family; we are watching the internal collapse and reconstruction of characters who are trying to find "a workable meaning" for their lives amidst the weight of their lineage.
While many modern Nollywood scripts feel like a collection of social media tropes stitched together, it treats its characters with a level of psychological depth that justifies its recent AMVCA accolades. It’s a script that understands silence. It knows that sometimes the most profound "writing" isn't a witty comeback or a shouted monologue, but the quiet, heavy realization of a character finally seeing their father's flaws for what they truly are—shadows that they no longer have to live within.

"The Drama.” (2026)

“What’s the worst thing you’ve done?”

Black comedies are so hard to land. Balancing genuine laughter with dark humour is difficult, but this film absolutely shines at it, and that’s why I think it’s probably one of my favourite watches this year.

The poster itself is deceptive, and even the trailer doesn’t give much away. I thought I was settling in for a cozy romantic movie, only for it to take a much darker, unexpected turn 😩. Like, imagine discovering that the person you’re about to walk down the aisle with in a week might actually be a mass murderer?! 😩😩. It works brilliantly because of how magnificent the two leads are.

I always forget Robert Pattinson is actually British lol. He has immersed himself so deeply into Hollywood that hearing him use his natural British accent here felt strange..but in a good way. The palpable fear he feels at the possibility that he might be marrying a monster is cringe, funny, and serious all at once. That’s what a good black comedy script does. Brilliant performance. Coincidentally, he turns 40 today🥳, and he might genuinely be the most bookable actor on the market right now, constantly working and consistently delivering solid performances. Such a gem of an actor.

Zendaya isn’t one of my favourite actresses simply because she often seems limited to a “deadpan” emotional range, but a black comedy requires that exact deadpan energy, and she shines brilliantly here.

This felt like the archetypal A24 flick...the kind they used to make back when they weren’t trying so hard to be mainstream. Brilliant, brilliant watch, as long as you don’t misread the film and you keep your eyes and mind open to what it’s really doing 👏🏿

OhBritannia:
The drama is a solid 10/10 for me.
This is one of the most interesting movie that i have seen for years.
Whoever thought of the concept and plot of the movie deserves multiple awards.

It isn't just about the movie, the other thing that struked me is how talented Zendaya is, i dare say she is even underrated at the moment.
Her facial expressions, the way her expression tells the current state of her emotions even without her saying a single word.
The movement of her eyes etc.
Nah mehn, she was born to act.

Anyways this movie is one that will spark an intensed debate across all social platforms very soon.
Questions will be asked!!
1) was the man right or wrong to have been worried?
2) Do you really think she is a psychopath?
3) Were her friends too judgemental or being too hypocritical?

This movie centers about True love and a past that literally ruined the relationship but one thing was certain, she kept trying to save the relationship, she did her best and it eventually worked out.
And also, the man might have stood by her, you can call him a coward but then again, can we really blame him?

This movie is one that will arouse your thoughts.
Kudos to each and everyone involved.
The first question. Lmaooo, People have called of weddings for far less...Hello!!...If i had the inkling that, the person i am potentially going to spend the rest of my life with, with almost a week to commuicdo oficial, might be a mass murderer?! Broo best believe, i am bolting as hell 😩😩. The man reacted in the most logical way.

Second question.
Tbf, she was giving off "pyscopath vibes" but i think the film gives enough reasons why she might not be.

Third Question.
With friends like that, who needs enemies?! They just threw her under the bus without a single ounce of benefit of doubt, especially the lady, meanwhile, she actually conceived something far worse and went through with it.

This was such a good good film 👍🏿

I love it. Long but lovely. Didn't even think I would finish it tonight, just wanted something before bed and here I am making a little review about it. It's a 9/10 for me.
I am rewatching it. Something I rarely ever do with movies. Funny, slow in some places and full of heart. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Absolutely right.
I honestly don't blame the man at all, her actions especially the way she reacted angrily to that cab driver, the way she pulled off that knife prank on him grin
Those actions made things worst for the man.
At the same time i felt pity for her because she actually loves him and wants to put her past behind her.
As for her friends, especially the lady, she was such an hypocrite because the kid she locked up would have died if they didn't find him and would have remained quiet so she is actually the real psychopath.

Honestly i love the movie, it was entertaining and it's been quite a while we've seen such detailed movies like this that touches down on reality.
The way they ended the movie got me smilling for real.

Thanks man.
Yeah, my name is in the credits.

Beautiful beautiful film. I remember challenging you back then I was involved in a film of international quality and was filmed in Nigeria. grin

You were doubting the coordination or how Nigeria could pull it off. grin Of course, I personally knew the production had some British help with planning and probably funding. cheesy

One of our favourite hobby on set was guessing how much the film production cost. And I remember some of us touting around #1bn naira...me included. Cos you could see the scale and level of equipment rented, location used, location planning, every single thing.
Even the food we were eating on set. It was very obvious this thing isn't the work of a true blooded naija production. grin grin
You know why??

Cos some Nigerian crew members was surprised how come every extras was getting food. Food was always available and reach everybody. Few occasions were a few people couldn't get a meal, an alternative meal was always on standby.
We made jokes how if it was a typical Nigerian setting, most of not none of those extras who were non essential members would get food at all sef when the day comes to an end.

The director.....great guy. Didn't know he was a cool dude until watching him on set. First day I met him, covering the kids while they were still doing rehearsals in Lagos and preparations was under way for principal photography, I couldn't tell he was the director. Cos dude was so simplistic. I was told earlier the director would be present. I was waiting and wondering when the real director would show up, not knowing it's actually the director (Akinola Davies) I've been shooting in action for some minutes — cos I'm like, nah the director would be snobby, in fancy clothes and want to make everyone feel his presence. I literally thought the dude was one of the tutors of the kids. Just to let you know how down to earth dude was. 😅😅

The experience was lit not gonna lie.

This movie, My Father's Shadow was transformative for me. You know I'm one of the few people here who usually isn't a believer of naija content or as you would say "New Nollywood" and avoid it mostly. But this film got me believing we have the talent to achieve our dreams for the industry, no matter how lofty.

I remember staunchly being against foreign entities being the brains behind our storytelling but man after this movie.... I don't hold such views anymore cos this was perfection. A perfect blend of Nigerian talent mixed with foreign help, support or funding.

That's why I was happy when I saw Nigerian actors in that upcoming Children of Blood and Bone movie. Like you said, we got tons of rich history to explore that we haven't gotten the bravery to mine for yet. Hopefully this will be the beginning of great things.

But for me, I think the problem is probably the audience. Just like I've been hammering on for the past few years. The audience usually dictates how the market is shaped. So far Nigerian audiences always turned up for these run-of-the-mill stories, our producers will always stick to the safe bet.

Look at this film My Father's Shadow....it didn't break much record at the box office. I'm doubtful much of the audience even knew about the film.
And I've seen a few people saying the cinemas in Lagos here was almost empty while they watched the film. Ironically the film was gaining good audience abroad in places it screened and good reviews but we here mostly shunned it.
Hopefully this award wins will open people's eyes.

The way I see it other media companies will be looking for these type of stories and adapting it more hopefully due to this film's success. I see the BBC playing an active role in shaping that cos I'm seeing more movement from them.

I watched that With Difficulty Comes Ease with that your Uzoamaka Power being the star. Nice film. A film I'd easily give a 7.5/10. It was a relatable story and looked at a serious societal norm tackling a topic about familial relationship, religious norms and our morality in a country like Nigeria as well as the travails of an average woman when her husband dies and at the mercy of the husband's family. Great watch.

Project Hail Mary..... 9/10

Surely, this is one of the best films of 2026. Ryan Gosling really did a fantastic job in this movie. It's been long I've really enjoyed a sci-fi film.

Top top film. Another instance in a film where music score and sound design is so pivotal to selling the story than even the action on the screen. A perfect symbiotic relationship!!

I'm glad AmazonMGM is finding their feet and delivered this masterpiece to us this year in a time when slop is the most popular word in film discourse these days.

Wonder why I just avoided that Gangs of Lagos no matter the noise and hype. I have been waiting for the trailer since last year. I was surprised I watched it last night seeing 77mn views. My mind was blown away given the fact that the studio has been a niche studio with little popularity asides it's critical acclaimed films... But low box office turn out.

I hope this is the big hit for the studio. It's an original as well. I will be so pissed if this doesn't get at least $350mn.

Matt Reeves running PR personally for "The Batman II"(2027) through gifs, in the past 2 days has been so wholesome. He might be an unserious filmmaker working with an even more unserious prod. company, because what are you telling me, one film is taking this long to make 😩, but he knows game and understand what's at stakes.

Wallahi, we might eat real good soon 👍🏿

The Punisher 2026, one last kill 1/10

Real trashester united.

I had to download body of lies(2008) to console myself (I always love Leonardo performance). Even that too had some western propaganda in it. I see CIA fighting alQaeda and was like WDF is this twisted Bleep.
