*If your Dog bites somebody today, can you escape liability simply because you wrote “BEWARE OF DOG” on your gate?* A lot of people think the answer is YES. The law says otherwise. That warning sign alone may not save you from being sued or even facing criminal liability. In fact, sometimes that same sign can become evidence AGAINST you. Why? Because it may prove that you already knew the dog was d@ngerous. Many people misunderstand the law. They think once they hang: “⚠️ BEWARE OF DOG” on their gate, every injury automatically becomes the victim’s problem. No. Under the law, once you decide to keep a dog especially an aggressive or d@ngerous one you have a duty to control it. Not advice. Not suggestion. Duty. So if your dog escapes through a faulty gate or roams freely outside Or attacks a delivery rider… A neighbour… A visitor… A NEPA official… Or even somebody you invited into your compound… That signboard may do absolutely nothing for you. You may still be sued. And yes, the victim can demand compensation for: 🥢 Medical bills 🥢 Pain and suffering 🥢 Permanent injuries 🥢 Emotional trauma 🥢 Loss of income And it can become VERY expensive. The shocking part? Section 207 of the Criminal Code makes it an offence to negligently allow a dangerous anim@l to cause h@rm. Meaning this is not always “just a dog issue.” It can quickly become a legal pr0blem. Now before somebody says: “What if the person was a th!ef?” That changes things. If someone jumps your fence at 2am trying to ste@l and gets bitten, the law may treat that situation differently because the person was trespassing unlawfully. But for lawful visitors? The law expects responsibility from the dog owner and this is where many people make a costly mistake. They rely on bold capital letters instead of proper control. A warning sign is NOT a magic shield. The real protection is: 🥢 A secured gate 🥢 Proper restraint 🥢 Proper training 🥢 Responsible handling Because when the lawsuit starts, “BUT I WROTE BEWARE OF DOG” may not be enough. The law does not bark but financially? It can bite harder than the dog itself. Now imagine this If your dog bites a child who innocently entered your compound to return a ball should the owner still be held responsible?

OP is trying to make fire without smoke. How many houses have beware of dog sign and when the dogs bite invited visitors, rely on the sign? The words “Beware” in itself is a cautionary note to trespassers and not to invited visitors. If you have a visitor, the sensible thing is to muzzle or cage your dog and allow free passage unless you have an ulterior motive. No one invites a visitor in, lets their dog injure the visitor and still rely on the signage outside. Once your dog escapes its enclosure or your compound, liability is automatically transferred to you as its owner and the dog can’t be running around with the “Beware of dog” sign on its neck.

adamkkk:No need for any warning to be posted about guard dogs, because the dogs will alert the house owner to prepare for war, the instant they hear the slightest sound at night. Criminals prefer to attack homes occupied by defenseless cowards who keep no dogs to alert them when intruders show up in the dead of night. Once your dogs raise the alarm, it is time to start shooting with reckless abandon, thereby serving notice that the house is fortified with adequate firepower in trained hands. |

So if your dog escapes through a faulty gate or roams freely outside... You are only contradicting yourself. What concerns beware of dogs written on your gate with your dog attacking outside your premises. Inside your gates the visitor has a responsibility of making sure the dog is under control before entering the premises after seeing the sign. Two different situations! |

If it happened on your property against someone that wasn't invited by you or you had no idea was coming, it's absolutely the tresspasser's fault legally. |

It is like saying I instal an electrified fence and you clamber over, get pulsed and have a cardiac event....or I place the good ol broken bottles atop the fence and you get a good gash....or you cut yourself while trying to scale my American Razor wire topped fence....or you get your big head stuck trying to slither between my hardened steel protector bars.... WHAT THE HELL WERE YOU DOING THERE.... "His dog, your honour, is just the flesh, bone and animal tenacity of all the above scenario" says my able lawyer. "So we move to have the case struck out on grounds of criminal trespass and seek to have the felon charged with animal cruelty because my clients dog has been forced to taste human blood against his ethics of being a strict vegetarian, your honour..."... ![]() |

This post makes absolutely no sense. The op should have rather listed the dangers of having guard dogs and not having that sign in front of your gate. It’s just like having electric fence and not attaching a warning sign in it. If someone gets electrocuted whether burglar or not you’re on a very long thing. |

giftson102:Putting up a “Beware of Dogs” sign on your gate is common in many homes, especially for security purposes. While it may seem like a simple warning, it carries several legal, social, and security implications—both positive and negative. |

Ebenezer2021:Jesus wept. Where have you seen anyone infected with rabies bark like a dog? Or do you think only dogs get rabid. So if a rabid monkey bites and infects a person, he/she'd bark like a dog or screech like a monkey? Educate us. |
