President Bola Tinubu has called on Nigerians to see tax payment as a civic obligation necessary for national development.

Tinubu spoke on Friday at the Africa CEO Forum in Kigali.

He said many citizens demand better roads, hospitals and social amenities while resisting taxation and other development-driven policies.

The president said taxes remain essential for financing infrastructure, healthcare, education and welfare programmes targeted at vulnerable citizens.

“Nobody wants to pay taxes. Yet everyone expects development. You want good roads and well-equipped hospitals, but you don’t want to contribute through taxes. The question is: how do we fund development and secure the future of our children?,”he said.

Tinubu maintained that both individuals and corporate organisations must contribute to national growth through compliance with tax obligations.

“A citizen who pays tax is a citizen. If you are not paying taxes and not exempted, then you are not fulfilling your obligation,” he said.

The president also defended the economic reforms introduced by his administration, including the removal of fuel subsidy and the unification of the foreign exchange market, describing them as difficult but necessary measures aimed at stabilising the economy.

According to him, Nigeria could no longer sustain subsidy payments and policies that encouraged corruption and smuggling.

“It was necessary to reset and reform the economy. We were spending future generations’ resources before they were born,” Tinubu said.

Reflecting on the state of the economy before the reforms, the president said several states struggled to pay salaries despite Nigeria’s oil wealth.

“You are producing oil, spending heavily on fuel subsidy, yet your refineries are not working. That trend was unsustainable,” he noted.

Tinubu acknowledged that the reforms initially triggered hardship and criticism but said early signs indicated that the policies were beginning to produce positive outcomes.

He stated that the naira had become more stable and predictable, making it easier for businesses and government institutions to plan effectively.

The president further explained that savings from the reforms had enabled the government to expand intervention programmes for students and vulnerable households through educational support and direct assistance initiatives.

Despite ongoing economic challenges, Tinubu expressed confidence in Nigeria’s long-term prospects, assuring that his administration would continue to pursue policies aimed at economic recovery, stability and sustainable growth.

Our problem here as a country is not about not paying Taxes,
Our problem is the excessive borrowings by the FG.
I saw an A post on facebook that said Something about how the FG has been advised not to reveal the name of any bank or firm that they are to borrow loans from, or even reveal the Amount they want to borrow Again to nigerians so as the curtail nigerians flooding the social media accounts of such firm or bank.(Allegedly oo, before you guys will flood on me)

That is the lowest of lows any country can fall into in terms of transparency !

Watching president Tinubu talking heh, if you asked him questions, his answers must come up with references which might be apart but if you linked them together, they are just 1

Just like the pregnant woman, there is always smile after the baby is out even though she might have gone through the labour pain for months

I am also on the opinion that humans need to reaccess this conceptt of leadership. I will prefer a return to era where only the strongest should lead. Not these lazy ass who cause wars, then send masses to go and fight and die. Then sit back, and get paid heavily by the masses. Rubbish!

Re: Tinubu To Nigerians: You Must Pay Taxes If You Want Development by Angelfrost(m): 2:06pm On May 17
Everyone pays taxes, whether you like it or not...!

You pay taxes directly or indirectly:

1. Direct deductions from your salaries (public or private) to state revenue services and FIRS.
2. Charges on bank transfers, airtime and data recharge, monthly service charges, etc.
3.VAT, each time you enter a supermarket, market, or pay for services.
Etc.

Coming from someone that said Let the poor breath. Public servant parents pay taxes, yet dig their own borehole, buy their own transformers in their streets, installed their own streetlight for night security as well as engage private security in their estates or communities, removed their children from public schools because of the low standard, is it the damage bad roads do to cars, I can go on and on. Everyone should go and get their PVC. cvr.inecnigeria.org enough said.

Oga, give account of the money from oil, gas, litheum, gold, etc. U all as govt took away everythng god gave us as gift, yet u still want to take from our income. Is that not wickedness? What have u done with the VAT and resources money in billions and trillions? Where are they?
Re: Tinubu To Nigerians: You Must Pay Taxes If You Want Development by Greenbirth: 2:07pm On May 17
When a fool and his tribalistic supporters think that all Nigerians are ignorant of what they are doing to the economy and the lives of the people. The past Minister of power, I don't even remember his name Adelabushit because he want to contest for governor, he was packing electricity money to support his campaign. Since he left you can see that light atleast is always available a little bit. To tell you that Tinubu's appointees are criminals just like their master.

Re: Tinubu To Nigerians: You Must Pay Taxes If You Want Development by tiswell(m): 2:08pm On May 17
I really pity Nigerians.

How much more tax will be paid to start seeing the dividends of democracy?
Re: Tinubu To Nigerians: You Must Pay Taxes If You Want Development by Eriokanmi: 2:08pm On May 17
Nobody is afraid of paying taxes Mr man. He who wants to wear a clothe on you, you first look at the clothe the person is wearing. It's a local adage. It's better to pay taxes to a responsible leader who would not use the masses money to travel abroad for medical treatment every 3 months and be deceiving Nigerians that he's going for a state's visit and briefly stop in France.

Or use the masses hard-earned money to buy votes or a branded bag of rice with 10k to woo voters, as we see all over Nigeria today cos of 2027 election.

Tinubu, you have failed woefully.
Re: Tinubu To Nigerians: You Must Pay Taxes If You Want Development by Dogalmighty17: 2:11pm On May 17
It is inside the taxes that we paid that NNPC spent over 10 billion dollars on refineries that still aren't working. It is inside these taxes that a former minister of power stole over 33 billion naira and is currently on the run. Our taxes were the 109 billion naira looted by the former minister of humanitarian affairs during president buharis misrule.
It is our taxes that they all loot and run to the APC because Adams Oshiomole said when you join the APC your sins are forgiven. Tax payers money is the 89 billion Yahaya Bello embezzled in Kogi state and he is still walking around freely.
Tax payers money is the 11 billion naira they paid to bandits for the freedom of kidnapped school girls. I can go on and on.

Yet they want us to pay more.
