Federal Government introduces Mandatory Tax ID for all Nigerians
The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), in collaboration with the Joint Revenue Board (JRB), has announced the implementation of a unified Taxpayer Identification (Tax ID) system aimed at strengthening tax administration and improving service delivery across the country.

In a public notice issued in Abuja on Monday, the agencies said the initiative was introduced in line with Sections 6, 7, and 8 of the Nigeria Tax Administration Act, 2025, which mandates every taxable person in Nigeria to obtain a Tax ID.

According to the notice dated May 18, 2026, the new Tax ID system is designed to create a single, harmonised identity for taxpayers nationwide, enabling seamless interaction with tax authorities at both federal and sub-national levels.

The agencies explained that the initiative forms part of ongoing reforms targeted at improving transparency, simplifying tax processes, enhancing accountability, and reducing leakages within the nation’s tax administration framework.

Under the new arrangement, the Tax ID will consolidate taxpayer records into a unified database, eliminate duplication of records, and ensure more efficient management of tax-related information.

The NRS and JRB highlighted several benefits expected from the implementation of the system, including simplified registration, filing, and payment of taxes, improved visibility and tracking of taxpayer records, enhanced revenue assurance, and harmonisation of taxpayer information across all tiers of government.

They added that the reform would also support better coordination between federal and state tax authorities while making tax compliance easier for individuals, enterprises, and businesses.

The notice further stated that Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), financial institutions, and organisations currently utilising the existing Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) Validation API would now transition to the newly introduced Tax ID system.

To facilitate a smooth migration process, organisations requiring integration or validation services for individuals, enterprises, and business names were directed to contact the Standardisation and Modernisation Department of the JRB, while corporate entities were advised to liaise with the Tax Automation Department of the NRS for access to the Tax ID API and related integration guidelines.

So what's the use of the TIN tax identification number we registered back then.
That aside, you can't be taxing us without giving back... How do you intend to give us back?

The thief is the man who saved billions of dollars from subsidy removal to hike petrol price but is taking more loans than PDP prosperity politicians who gave us cheap petrol.

Abi you know where all the money disappeared into ni huh

Deltafirstson:
Although the pump price of fuel was N197 when President Bola Tinubu took over on May 29, 2023, the product now sells for N617 per litre – less than two months after.

In his inaugural address, Tinubu announced that subsidy was gone, fulfilling a promise that all leading presidential candidates made during the campaign.

Nigerians have been lamenting the hardship occasioned by fuel price hike. Amid the lamentation, a video where Tinubu campaigned to slash the price of fuel went into circulation.

Checks by Daily Trust affirmed the authenticity of the video uploaded on the YouTube page of Channels Television.

At his campaign rally in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital, on January 25, 2023, Tinubu spoke on a number of issues, but those of fuel scarcity and naira redesign made the headlines.

However, Tinubu who spoke in Yoruba language, also assured the crowd that though people were saying petrol price would hit N200, it would be reviewed downward under him.

“The great Nigerian youths, the great Nigerian students, the confident Nigerian youths. This is a revolution. This election is a revolution. They are plotting, but they will fail. They said fuel price will increase and reach N200 per litre. Go and relax, we will bring it down,” he had said in the 7th minute of the video.

The move by the Nigeria Revenue Service and the Joint Revenue Board toward a unified Tax ID system is, on paper, a commendable step. A single harmonised database can reduce duplication, simplify compliance, improve coordination between federal and state tax authorities, and make tax administration more transparent. For businesses and individuals already struggling with multiple identification requirements, a properly implemented unified system could save time and reduce confusion.

However, the concern many Nigerians will raise is consistency and policy credibility.

For years, government agencies repeatedly stated that the National Identification Number (NIN) would become the central identity framework for accessing public services — including taxation. Citizens were encouraged to link their bank accounts, SIM cards, passports, voter records, and other services to NIN precisely to avoid duplication of identity systems.

Now, introducing another “unified” Tax ID raises legitimate questions:

If NIN was already positioned as the foundational identity for tax purposes, why create a separate Tax ID architecture again?

Why did the authorities previously encourage Nigerians to rely on NIN as a universal identifier if another dedicated system would still be required?

What happens to the existing TIN generators and validation systems already operating through the former FIRS/NRS platforms?

Will this reform genuinely simplify processes, or merely add another layer of bureaucracy and integration challenges?

The public deserves clarity on whether this new Tax ID is:

1. merely an extension linked directly to NIN,

2. a replacement for the existing TIN structure,

3. or an entirely separate identifier generated independently through the NRS portal.

Without that clarity, many people will understandably see this as another cycle of policy overlap and system duplication rather than true reform.

A more reassuring approach from the authorities would have been to clearly explain:

how the new Tax ID differs from the existing TIN,

how it integrates with NIN,

whether citizens must re-register,

and why previous assurances about NIN serving as a tax identifier have now evolved into a separate Tax ID framework.

Digital tax reform is necessary, but trust in reform depends heavily on consistency, transparency, and avoiding multiple overlapping identity systems that confuse citizens instead of simplifying governance.

Tax...a very un-serious government

At this time? You want to tax poor people?

In US and UK, you don't tax poor people

They even give unemployment benefits .

But here , poor people must pay tax by all means

You said if you don't earn more than 800k per year you should not pay tax ...if someone earns 1.2 million per year, can this amount get him a good apartment in Lagos? Yet he must pay tax . Wickedness
